Honor and Blood?... really? is that the best title they came up with?...
it sucks ¬¬
They could've gone with: Pumpkin Scissors: War Relief Unit or Pumpkin Scissors: Randel Oland is a masochist
Anyway, I'll just stick with just calling Pumpkin Scissors.

I think "Honor and Blood" is just the subtitle for the first volume. Otherwise, the article would be calling the whole thing "Pumpkin Scissors: Honor and Blood."
That's not quite what the first four episodes entail, but leave it up to the Kira-esque influence of ADV marketing to create cheesy names like this that will inevitably make or break a series. At least they didn't change the series' name into something ridiculous like "Anti-Tank Trooper X" or "Relieving Spirit" .
Individual volume names aside, I'm eagerly looking forward to buying this series when it hits Right Stuf's Bargain Bin. No, my waiting time does not reflect my fandom of the series itself, but after paying almost SRP for Getbackers then having RS throw every single volume in the BB a week later at only $8 a piece, I've made a vow to never pay more than $8 per individual volume and around $12 per starter set for any ADV title from now until death.
If RS decides not to sell anymore ADV titles in the Bargain Bin someday, then I'll just find the fansubs again. I'm sure the blokes in Houston will make enough money for their "fabulous" company to survive another few years after the new Eva Platinum tinned box set comes out .

Cheh, wake me up when MagiKano gets announced, or when September ends, whichever comes first.

At least they didn't call it "Relief Warrior Chronicles"

That's what I'm doing with Welcome to the NHK!, anyway. Pumpkin Scissors never interested me enough to get on fansubs, let alone on DVD. But Magikano (announced at the same time as Pumpkin Scissors, NHK, and Red Garden) that's what I'm getting as it comes out. Sheer cheesiness and hilarity
Something that always amuses me about these press releases...
Quote: | Pumpkin Scissors (SRP $29.98 DVD) is a DVD-only anamorphic release including the first four episodes, presented in both English 5.1 and Japanese 2.0 with English subtitles. Extras include clean opening animation, clean closing animation and previews of upcoming ADV Films releases. |
I just wonder why they make it a point to mention "DVD-only." Come on ADV, where's the VHS? How do you expect to get sales from consumers living 8 years behind the times?? (Okay, they could be saying DVD-only in exclusion of HD-DVD/Blu-Ray, but they've been saying that during all the years that VHS was dead and no HD formats were on the horizon.)

Argh, it's frustrating to see hardly anyone even cares about this series. It's actually pretty good if you can get past the first 8 episodes. They're episodic, yes, but I think they're great character-builders until the story and plot twists come into effect around all of that Silver Wheel organization and Invisible 9. And how can anyone not cheer for Alice towards the end when she stands up for justice and all of that, like a real noble should?
Granted, you'd have to see the whole series since she doesn't reach the peek of her character until the end, but the manga is still ongoing, and I'm anxious to see more anime, should GONZO decide to make a continuance.
It really is a fun series with a good mix of comedy, drama, and even a little bit of social commentary through the whole "War Relief Unit" theme and the depiction of the military, Pumpkin Scissors group, and common folk trying to recover from the war. Hopefully if the ADV doesn't produce yet another crappy dub, this one can sneak its way into a little more popularity.

Heh, it took me a moment to figure out just what you were referring to with those title changes
I don't know, Pumpkin Scissors doesn't seem like a bad series to me, but with so much on the plate and in the backlog, it didn't pass the threshold for me to check it out in fansubs. (Not to mention there was a certain tragic moemoe KyoAni-made adaptation of a Key visual novel airing at the same time ) Plus, I'm always wary when I hear "open ending" / "there's a lot more manga" / "they need to make a second season" in forum chatter, because to me that's another Berserk experience waiting to happen. Who knows though, I do have some appreciation for GONZO, so I'm not ruling out Pumpkin Scissors forever. Maybe in thinpack if there aren't any worthwhile extras.

I only ever watched the first two episodes of this one in fansubs (and that was mostly for doing the Fall Preview Guide last year), but between my appreciation for Alice and the sharp-looking trailer ADV has produced for the series, it's enough to get me to rent it at the very least.

I thought, from your viewpoint, that was pretty much a given?

apparently so.
But seriously, I recommend you and everyone else give this series a chance. It's not mind-blowingly fanastic or anything, but it's better than a lot of other titles I've been watching in the last couple of years. I think if ADV can market this one fairly well, it could be a solid title in their line-up, hopefully along the level of Chrono Crusade and not Peace Maker Kurogane.

Actually I was referring to the "ADV producing another crappy dub" part of your comment, Tony K.
I already expect this series to be successful but probably not a big hit.

All righty. I saw the preview at various ADV panels, and I really liked the first episode, but then people started saying it went downhill from there so I became less interested, but since I trusted you on Mushishi (and found a fabulous title), I will go ahead and give this a try (along with Red Garden, which I also liked the first episode of).

Just the first 8? I watched until 16 or 17 and finally gave up. It was starting to look interesting, but that had happened several times before. 9 and 10 were looking good, then it got dull again. 13-16 or whatever that arc covered was starting to look good again, but at that point, I had given it far too many chances and it still wasn't enough. From what I hear, the first season was still pretty open ended, so I don't have any real interest unless there is eventually a second season. Then maybe I'll eventually get thinpacks. Maybe.
