I'm sorry, but after reading these two sentences, I find that I can not control my laughter long enough to comment on anything else. What the hell were you thinking when you wrote this? Crazy fun.

poor flake. his heart was in the right place, he just could have exercised more common sense. i also agree that elitists are annoying, particularly the ones that think all dubs are evil.

Darn I wanted to see Sky Blue- but only because it looked nice. its sad to know it was a bad movie.
Whoa? The date question is a breath of fresh air. LOL to th ebi and large. I've noticed that too. the girls who were in my anime group as well as a large number in my anime club were heavier and bisexual. I don't know why that is though.
LOL about the actual dating advice. Just LOL.
Cute panda- i do think its weird. Why let the french (slightly ot) subs of naruto shippudden stay up for months but take down the english ones? I know there are some kids targeting simply naruto, but still take it all down and not just some.
Answerfans seemed...a little weak. its only the second posting, but I expected maybe another type of answer.
i dislike the naruto kids who wear headbands, etc to the mall. And the manga rats bug me. thats it.

Dating tips from Answerman. . . Boy, I'm at a lack for words. . .
I'm part of the "old school" fandom myself and could especially empathize with the gentlman who felt slightly "out of place" with all the young fans. Not only do I feel awkward when I set foot into the manga section of a bookstore, but I also don't like to discuss my hobby with adults. When people my age find out that I'm a fan, I usually get one of three responses. . .
1. Why do those characters have such big eyes?
2. I liked Spirited Away.
3. My son loves Pokemon/Naruto
Anime is a format, not a genre people! ^_~

I really liked this response. You rock Answerman!

Definetly a new kind of Answerman that I have seen today. Not only were we talking about another country, but Zac was having to give advice at dating! Sometimes people get lucky and sometimes they don't, I would say. What has had me wondering for a while though is are most women otaku BL fans like series depict them?
I think that was a flake that definetly had something going, but he's still a little too young to understand the real world we have out there.

I'm still going to watch Sky Blue, just to see for myself. Who knows, I might love it. I have a history of liking/loving movies widely accepted as bad ones (and also not liking/hating movies widely accepted as great ones, I'm afraid).
As for the dating question, I was a bit surprised that one was in there. But the "goods are odd/bi and large" thing, hilarious.
Hmm, another week without a new banner, eh? Guess I should try to make some time in order to submit one of my own creations (haven't really had the time as of late). I did have that stretch in which Zac used one of my banners for each of the three columns in May.

Funny that that should come up, because there is this girl that I've known since I was five, and I just so happened to meet her at Expo, which concluded an 18 month period where I hadn't seen her. She admitted to me once she got into such a relationship, and she is pretty much an otaku type girl, more than me.

Never seen Sky Blue, but whoa now, The Host was a pretty good low budget horror flick. If anything, it wasn't clichéd. Masterpiece? Far from it. Commercial success? Yes.
The problem with the industry there is just like the mentality we have here.
Looks good, let's jump on the bandwagon. *coughTokyopopcough*
Too many titles have I seen, overwhelmingly "shoujo" with crappy generic art and weird chins that jut out far too much to be anatomically possible. Too many eyes have I seen drawn in such a way as could light an entire Target store and blind everyone in it.
But the Korean market, being oh so close to Japan, is predictably over-saturated with titles from Japan. A dime a dozen. How do you foster your own national talent when you have to compete with "the real stuff?" A LOT of it?
Mainstream Korean manhwa look like and emulate manga because that's what's there. That's what the artists and writers were raised on, intentionally or not. Hell, I don't think until the late 90's the government even officially revealed Japanese entertainment imports, i.e., anime and manga, as actually Japanese.
But then again, blanket statements about an entire country's creative talent as being bankrupt based upon what limited titles American publishers decided to bring over to make a few bucks on the "manga style" bandwagon isn't exactly, shall we say, broad.
But the point is there. You take what's good from the source and you learn from it. You work at your own unique thing you have instead of copying and copying. Instead of blindly following the money and your ego, you try to be proud of what you make.
I don't know why the talent isn't shining through. Maybe it's in the rough, or maybe it's still developing. Whatever the reason, this is a lesson for America as well.
Manga is NOT a style and nor is it a genre.
It's a medium. A subset of the overall comics medium, and a cultural extension of Japan.
If it had an instruction booklet, there'd be no manga, just comics.

The only two wholly Korean animated movies I've seen are Oseam and My Beautiful Girl Mari, and both are wonderful. Mari's easily availible on R1, but I had to rent Oseam from a now defunt DVD rental service. They don't "feel" like anime, but that shouldn't stop any animation buffs from checking them out.
Otherwise,

Hee..they said the same things about the men in Alaska when I lived there. It's quite accurate.
I'll probably write an actual response this time, but my short answer for the question of the week is "nothing." These people owe me nothing, unless of course I buy a DVD and case is empty or they blatently lied about what they're selling me.

This is one of the more livelier Answerman's that I've read in a while. The dating question really spiced it up and the crack about the bi/odd was hilarious.
The only Korean animation that seems interesting is My Beautiful Girl Mari. I don't have much interest in original korean animation or manhwa; nothing looks appealing. Their movies are pretty good though.
Now if only their dramas could be as interesting as their movies

lol that is kind of true.
I'm also getting tired of this manga bandwagon. I hate how so many more American cartoons are getting animated in anime style. I don't really understand the point because I beleive the reason anime is so popular amoung children is because of the story not art.
As for answerfan I would say they only owe me an English dub which they do anyway so its all good

A very interesting article. Good work, Answerman!

You know, I haven't gotten my hands on the Japanese version of a Disney song yet, but I can see myself adopting this view simply because of my profound interest in the Japanese language and my general admiration with most of the Japanese-produced voice work I have heard. Though admittedly, Disney will likely give them much better competition than any of the dubbing companies out there.

Even if a dub really is excellent, you have to accept that there are fans (like myself) who simply don't care. I like the sound of Japanese, and will continue to watch anime with the original soundtrack regardless of the quality of the dub, and I am sure there are more people like me.
Lastly, I would also like to mention that those obsessive yaoi fangirls do embarrass the heck out of me, especially the part where they insist on their gay coupling being canon. *choke*

As for the "embarrassing otaku" question, I'll be honest with you:
* I do like the sound of the Japanese language a lot, perhaps more than I should (though not to the point where I would seriously watch something non-Japanese in Japanese.)
* I do prefer subs, but I don't get angry with dub fans at all. We have to remember that the "hostility" to dubs is simply a holdover from the 90s, when most anime dubs were heavily censored and heavily altered.
* I may insert the occasional "ne" into my speech, but by and large I try to avoid using Japanese loanwords other than "anime" (based on an English word anyway), "manga", and the various genres of anime/manga. You won't be hearing American Otaku Patois from me!
