I've said this a bunch of times already, but I'll say this again - with every new Fate project, I'm always hoping they really expand the range of mythologies they draw from!
Hey, why *not* an Ilya Muromets servant! |

Medusa in her monster form is pretty terrifying in the Nasuverse. Kinda sad we don't get it in Fate/stay night and the chances of a hollow ataraxia adaptation or English release are zero to none.
Also, seeing Gilgamesh being the poster boy for the Feature and then not having him in the actual article is a bit disappointing. |

" His original master was Bazett Fraga McRemitz"
This franchise has the most incredible names. |

I was hoping Medea's noble phantasm thing would be Helios' chariot. The original asspull. Instead it's just a knife, coz she was backstabbed by Jason, innit? Didn't much care for her character in UBW. Take a character with a backstory like Medea & make all her motivations boil down to "I just want a boring guy who likes me for me" is just naff.

Well the noble fantasm thing is easy to understand... her original master was a typical magus so she was summoned as CASTER, why would have the chariot? She would Have the Chariot if she was summoned as Rider. Kind of like arturia, She would have her spear(rono....) if she was summoned as Lancer(possible) or her Horse (part of her myth) if she was a Rider. |

It seems Assassin is made up of several popular people at once:
- Sasaki Kojiro - The person who mastered Tsubame Gaeshi - The person who wielded a laundry pole sized sword - A wanderer who spent his time cutting... Probable reason why he couldn't be summoned normally... |

Man, and I was with you until here too. Pretty sure you misspelled Sola-Ui, haha. At any rate, to hopefully mitigate your confusion about Kojiro (and probably just add more): In the past when everything was better and flashier and people were actually important, there was the Age of Gods, when Medea, Medusa and Herakles lived. When the Age of Man came around - in large part thanks to Gilgamesh - the very laws of reality shifted, retroactively rendering Medea, Medusa, and Herakles mythical. As for Kojiro, the Nasuverse version of the myth has Miyamoto Musashi as real, but the genius swordsman Sasaki Kojiro be invented for a cool story to make Musashi better. As a result, False Assassin is a composite of the name Sasaki Kojiro, the person who used his katana Monohoshizao, and the nameless farmer who was actually capable of using Tsubame Gaeshi. On a different note, are you planning on covering any of the Servants introduced in Fate/EXTRA, Fate/EXTRA CCC, Fate/Apocrypha, Fate/Prototype Fragments or Fate/Grand Order? |

Thank you very much for writing this article. I'm a big history nerd so I'm always thrilled when a show like this utilizes such characters and themes beyond just vague references. Its good to see other people digging into this aspect of it.

If so I'd definitely want one for Fate/strange Fake. That one is just crazy |

Unfortunately there isn't enough of the story out to really compare them with their mythological counterparts (and most of the Servants either haven't showed up or aren't "officially" revealed), but seeing an Enkidu blurb would be interesting. Maybe he'll feature in Gilgamesh's entry with some of his CCC stuff? |

If you look at everything, there's actually a pretty wide range. Note that some characters are mythological/legendary, and some are historical. I'm separating out Arthurian because there are so many. Japanese - 12* French - 9* Greek - 9 British/Great Britain - 8 Original - 8* Arthurian - 7* Roman - 5 Chinese - 4 Persian - 4* Celtic - 3* Romanian - 3* Catholic Saints - 2 Indian (country, not Native American)- 2 Scandinavian - 2 Sumerian - 2 Teutonic - 2 Austrian - 1 Biblical - 1 Buddhism - 1 Central Asia - 1 Dutch - 1 Hungarian - 1 Norse - 1 Spanish - 1 Syrian - 1 ???** - 1 Seems like quite a bit of sources, to me. And Nasu's always coming up with new random ideas, so... Now, there are 2 rules that you also have to keep in mind. 1) The more well-known a Servant's legend is, the more powerful they will be. That's why Greek, British, Arthurian, French, etc. are going to be more common, their tales are more well-known. 2) For the Fuyuki Grail War (the 4th and 5th of which were depicted in Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night), there is an injunction against Japanese figures being summoned (due to rule #1). F/sn Assassin, Koujiro, is an exception to this, because a) he was improperly summoned by another servant, and b) he's a fictional figure known to not really have existed. * - These counts include one or more figures who are represented twice (or more). Because they are considered separate characters from separate works (or separate incarnations within the same work), according to the wikia, I counted them separately. ** - This character may or may not be original or Persian, the wikia doesn't make it clear, and since they are "The Nameless Assassin," I can't exactly look them up on Wikipedia. |

I really love the idea of Fate/Stay Night for reasons stated in the article and I love Fate/Zero. But I'm just not a fan of the later characters that joined the franchise in side games and such (except Fate/Zero).
It's one of the series I really like the premise and idea of, but the execution leaves much to be desired. |

Thank you Gabriella, that was informative and hilarious. I completely lost it at Archer.
And who decided to use Gilgamesh as the thumbmail when he's not featured in the article? Filthy mongrels. Last edited by jesusalcala11 on Wed Sep 09, 2015 1:24 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Actually, Saber can survive as well, in one of the endings to Unlimited Blade Works.
Kuzuki isn't a monk. He's just crashing at the temple for a while.
Wait, so you're otherwise okay with a world abundant in vampires, demons, nature spirits, magic, planet gods, time axes, the collective unconscious as an actual thing, and an extra-dimensional space where the spirits of all legends reside (all of which are abundant IN PRESENT DAY), but you're not okay with the idea of mythological or legendary figures being real in that world? Seems a bit... insane, if you ask me. Anyway, the Nasuverse is a multiverse (note all of Fate/stay night's endings exist in parallel universes). All mythological or legendary figures generally exist as real in some universe, even if not in all of them. The Throne of Heroes exists outside of time and space, outside the realm of the multiverse in general for that matter. This is why, not only can you summon a hero from a future point in time, you can also just as easily summon a hero from another reality besides your own (actually applies to the same guy in this case). Although note some of them, such as Cú Chulainn, are considered to have actually existed in the past of the main Fate universe. Also, many historians actually believe that Sasaki Kojiro did NOT exist, and that he was just invented for the sake of the story of the famous duel where Musashi defeated him. This is directly referenced in Fate, by the way. Other historians believe that there was a swordsman with that name, but that he is unrelated to the story of the swordsman wielding a famous long sword who was defeated by Musashi in a duel. Which is also directly referenced in Fate. Not to mention, you based that whole statement on LACK of EVIDENCE, NOT on there being evidence proving otherwise. Not being able to wrap your head around something being possible just because you haven't seen any evidence EITHER WAY is, as I said, basically insane. Sure, you could think the idea is stupid (but what anime premise isn't), but you acted like you were trying to apply science to it with clearly no idea how that actually works. P.S. Fate/Zero's story was actually authored by Nasu as well. Urobuchi merely put it in prose. Don't believe me (and don't want to check the many interviews where they say it explicitly, the most obvious way to do it, but rather want to do it the more orthodox way of just reading source material)? Try Fate/hollow ataraxia. I dare you. Every bit of Fate/Zero's story, down to tiny details, is referenced within, years before the Urobutcher ever touched it.
