I don't even think it's worth comparing given the huge variances in screens anime films get on.

Would have been hilarious if it beat Fantastic Four.

So far it seems it's at least gotten better reviews lol. |

I gotta admit that I'm a little dismayed that Shaun the Sheep didn't even crack the top 10 on its opening weekend in the United States and Canada (at least according to BoxOffice.com's estimates.) I suppose that's because Shaun the Sheep was never that popular in America and the film was created for those international markets where the TV show is a quite popular (like Japan, where I've seen Shaun the Sheep show up on the weekly Japan "anime" TV ratings posted right here on ANN), but, still, it's a bit sad to see an Aardman film with a 99% Tomatometer (higher than even Inside Out's 98%, albeit with less than half the number of reviews of Inside Out) wallow in obscurity. (I'd see Shaun the Sheep myself but I just don't have the money at the moment, though I presume it should be at the second-run place I usually wait to see movies at by September.) |

I doubt any anime movie released theatrically stateside will best Pokemon the First Movie's $85+ million here.

I always feel like posting the US numbers for Ghibli movies is kind of a moot point since they make 99 percent of their money outside of the US.
Howl's Moving Castle for instance made 4 million in the US, and then another 230 million worldwide. And then people always complain about why do super hero movies under perform compared to their US box office totals. The Dark Knight made more in the US then the rest of world. That is why I only care about WW totals. |

Toei, at this point, has no excuse to not release Super stateside. It is hitting record breaking sales at the box office, and is going to make even more money. Demand for Dragonball is still at its highest, and no matter how I look at it, they are losing money by being so stubborn.

As I have said before, Toei probably want to do it properly. I'm guessing they wanted a dubbed launch, on an actual television channel or a big non-niche streaming service like Netflix, with tonnes of promo and tonnes of merchandise. It's very difficult to pull that off simultaneously with Japan (and obviously Japan takes priority). And the way people are going on about it, provided Super drops sometime within the next 6-8 months, people are still going to go absolutely mental over it. Why would Toei half-arse it, and just randomly put it up a subtitled version (which would probably alienate a lot of people) on some streaming site most of the core audience has never heard of, when they could take their time and make an absolute killing off the back of it? |

And great payback for Evolution. Kadmos: Well, maybe not soon. But perhaps one day. Crown: It's still interesting to see which Ghibli pics rank higher than the others here. Nonetheless, U.S. box office is important, because it can be a gauge for overall consumer demand here. Metal:
Oh, they got a perfect excuse. They don't care. They'd rather let their hit shows be pirated than allow us to have good releases of them. Also, while they did animate the last two movies, as usual, I imagine FOX was the owner of them this time. Buzz:
Um, when has Toei ever wanted to do anything properly? Have you seen our DVDs, when they're in charge of QC?
They have with other anime, so it wouldn't be a first. |

Though technically adjusted for inflation, it still has another couple hundred thousand to go before it beats Howl's Moving Castle, but I'm glad to see this do so well! It's gonna be a LONG time before any anime movie defeats Pokemon: The First Movie here. Adjusted for inflation, that movie made $120M in the US/Canada alone.
I'm pretty sure we'll see Super here at some point. It's just a matter of when. |

The screening I was intending to visit, according to Fandango, has already been sold out. That was unexpected. Goes to show how much demand is for this sort of thing, it seems.
At that rate, I'm sure it can get those hundreds of thousands of dollars needed by the end of Tuesday.
Is Shaun the Sheep in wide release? I had the impression it wasn't. If it is, then that IS a bit puzzling as to why the North American kids have largely decided to pass on it. Maybe it's because it isn't CGI, though stop motion doesn't usually do THAT bad if it's wide release. |

^ It's in 2,300 theaters. I would call that "wide," though the showtimes may be limited. It came out in the UK back in February, and it's being released here pretty quietly by Lionsgate. The advertising has been rather poor, and I don't think the TV show ever really caught on here. I had a strong feeling it wasn't gonna do very well. A shame since it's getting great reviews, it looks really adorable, and I love Aardman! It did very well in the UK, and it probably made back it's budget, so it's not a total disaster.
For DBZ RF, I'm surprised the screenings are still selling out. I could understand it happening for BoG, where you had two screenings to choose from, but for RF, I'm surprised it's doing so well. It looks like they found their niche! |

Nope, but I'll raise you Toei Animation Europe, who refuse to stream anything in the UK, except Toei's crappy ONAs and World Trigger, which is a Crunchyroll premium exclusive (but only in Europe, it goes free everywhere else AFAIK). I don't know why, they couldn't even sell DBZ Kai to a TV station anybody had ever heard of, so I doubt they'll ever make a sale on One Piece or World Trigger, so their stubbornness is basically losing them money and they don't seem to care... Yes, but not recently with Dragon Ball, even with Sailor Moon, it's appeal probably isn't that great outside of the core-anime fanbase, and it's certainly not big with kids. Dragon Ball is clearly huge. |
