It seems that Sony has really went out of their way to buy so many of those emoji. It'll be interesting to see how a movie that's centered around emoji will play out.

It'll be interesting to see if they'll have any money left for it after "Hotel Transylvania 2" and "Goosebumps".

Hey, there was a movie based on the paper&pencil game Battleship, and the newly-released Pixels, so a movie with emojis as its central theme isn't far-fetched.

I thought it was just the film rights to use them. (I didn't even know they were copyrighted.)

Technically every doodle ever has a copyright, but they probably had to pay off the smilely guy first and foremost.
Also, when did we stop calling them emoticons, anyway?

Nicolas Loufrani? I thought he just owned the iconic yellow round smiley face.

Hence why I said "pay him off" instead of "license". He almost certainly has no rights to anything further, but I wouldn't doubt anybody as soulless as that wouldn't try.

This is what I was wondering. Must be the new kids who never used ICQ.

They aren't copyrighted. The studio paid that price for the script Leonidis was selling.
Quote: | Leondis conceived the idea and then pitched it to multiple studios with storyboards in hand. Sony Pictures Animation president Kristine Belson snatched it up at the behest of studio chief Tom Rothman. The push to buy up the idea from Leonidis is in part because emojis don't have a rights holder out of Japan, leaving the concept open for other creators to build off of. |

There's differences; obviously, emoji are individual characters (previously images/icons) and are also part of the Unicode standard now. Looks like it was an originally a Japanese term that started in the late 90s (by which I mean, according to Wikipedia...).
