I miss those days when it didn't matter where a cartoon originated from, back when I didn't even care. But now, there's all sorts of flame wars over who's best, American or Japanese cartoons. People on both sides constantly name calling and naming stupid little details of what each side has over the other one. Like people saying anime characters are ugly, that's crazy!, anime has some of the most unique characters ever and those who say cartoons are random and lack storylines, I don't know where you learned about storylines but storylines aren't about having a problem that doesn't resolve for 8 or more episodes. I love both sides no matter what, some of you should just let some of that soak in. Yup, I miss those good old days.

(P.S. - I know this is probably spam or "half spam" but I had to get it off my chest)

I remember when I was a wee one in the 80's, I used to watch any and every cartoon. Transformers, Voltron, Go-bots, Heeman, GI Joe, etc. I didn't even know half of these were even made in Japan. Of course I was like 5, sor I probably didn't even know what Japan was. Confused

It still doesn't.

So? Flame wars don't 'matter.' And for what it's worth, this forum--dedicated to anime--is by no means itself a hotbed of pro-anime, anti-American-animation ranting. You can escape from that here ....

Really? I don't doubt that such forums exist, but why on earth would you spend any of your time on them?

I have never heard anyone say that. But here's the thing ... I enjoy anime, so I look for information online. I visit online environments like this forum where anime is discussed productively.

This forum does not attract the types of folks who would think, let alone say, that anime characters are ugly ... or anime is dumb ... or whatever.

Some storylines are exactly like that. Others aren't.

What we call 'cartoons' go back to days when a theatrical short's storyline was resolved within 7 to 8 minutes. Eventually, full-length animated features began to show up, like Snow White and the Seven Dwarves.

Then TV enabled a whole lot more storytelling format lengths, such as 12 minutes, 24 minutes, etc. And while most early animated TV series were not long-running serials, soon enough that format became feasible, leading to the likes today of the American show 'Avatar: The Last Airbender,' which suggested right from the first episode that it would be taking its time to tell an epic story.

I just started to watch 'Texhnolyze' the other day on G4 and was impressed not so much by its slow and careful pace as by its almost total lack of dialogue. It gave me a new appreciation for animation's great potential for visual storytelling, rather than relying on words. But that doesn't mean I don't like a good line on 'The Simpsons.'

Given the broader variety of choice that we have today as consumers, I'd say these are much better days than the 'good old days.' More animation of all types is available to us now than ever before.

Long before anime I loved to watch Looney Tunes, MGM cartoons and the late 90’s Cartoon Network shows. I guess over the years I’ve come to like anime more because of the variety of age ranges and tastes. But I still love to watch Looney Tunes every now and then.

I for one do not miss the old days. Sure Loony Toons and Tom and Jerry were fun, but American Animation is still the creator of Ren and Stimpy. The horror of the "Happy Happy Joy Joy" song still haunts me to this day lol.

Things have improved and I hope we never have to go back to that time.

I miss the good old days of good American cartoons. Remember Batman: The Animated Series? Full of win and awesomeness and Mark Hamill Joker. They end Justice League effectively the entire DC Animated Universe and start over with new stuff. Teen Titans was actually decent. The Batman sucked in the beginning, but I've heard it's improved but just don't watch it. The Legion of Super-Heroes, with them calling what should be Superboy Superman instead because DC's afraid to pay more with the Superboy name in copyright jumbles, yeah, I avoid that.

It's kinda sad. We get good stuff. Megas XLR was awesome but targeted to a younger and wrong market. With all it's pop culture and super robot and other references, it should have been on Adult Swim where those who get the reference would have saw it. We just suck at making stuff that's not episodic comedies for the masses like Fox's stuff or kiddy cartoons that try to take elements from anime instead of be original.

However, the good old days had me getting up way too early on Saturdays to watch cartoons, so them being gone has at least one good point.

There's been plenty of great American-produced animation in recent years, including 'Ratatouille,' 'Avatar: The Last Airbender,' 'The Venture Bros.,' 'The Incredibles,' 'Home Movies,' 'Futurama' and 'Samurai Jack' ... and that's just the stuff I happen to be really into; there's also the likes of 'Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends.'

I would have to say that I do miss the days when I could watch Garfield or Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (older version) in the mornings, and Darkwing Duck. There were some pretty good series back then but when you grow up times change and the style of things change as well. I am, however, thankful for DVD releases and anime, because if they didn't exist I don't know what I would have done then.

Honestly, I'm not really that sentimental about my childhood and a lot of stuff I would've liked when I was 10, such as Ren and Stimpy, Ninja Turtles, etc., I don't think I'd like now. A few years ago when they had that adult Ren & Stimpy show on I tried watching that but I couldn't last more than a couple minutes it annoyed me so badly. So I don't really long for the good old days and if its something that I wouldn't like if it came out now, then I won't want to watch it now. So I guess I prefer Japanese animation simply because there is a lot more of it to appeal to me than what is available for American animation. But I do like some American animation such as Animatrix, Aeon Flux, HBO Spawn series, and Riddick: Dark Fury. And I do remember Batman: The Animated Series having some good storylines and characters and being based more around the Tim Burton Batman movies so I might still like that if I were to watch it today; I'm not really sure.

I guess the "good old days" were a bit different for me..

I've been watching anime for a really long time, but for most of the time I just watched anime and had fun with it. I'm not saying I stopped having fun with anime, but it's more complicated now. Back then no one (or I had no idea) that there were genres, animation production studios, etc. Fights about how shonen is childish, anime can only come from Japan and there is no such word as anime or how lolis =pornography, were all non-existent to me.

Anime is still fun, but it was easier for me back then.

I do not miss the good old days personally, I live in the present, and for the here and now, looking forward twards the future. The past is something that can not be changed and therefore is not worth worrying about or over-analyzing.

I think the good ol days were so good because anime wasn't as big and there was no question on things like subs vs dub because licensed and released anime domestically was pretty much always horribly butchered. They were also so good because we lacked the likes of ANN forums as the internet was still in its infancy so there were far fewer people for you to clash with.

Warning: lengthy post

I don't really miss the good old days per se, but I really do have fond memories of Saturday mornings when I got up to watch Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (old one), Beetleborgs, X-Men, Spiderman, Bobby's World, Garfield and Friends, Sonic the Hedgehog, and when I got access to Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network ten years ago, some of the shows that were on these channels, like Rugrats, Johnny Bravo, Double Dare, Dexter's Laboratory, Ren and Stimpy, and the beginning of my on again, off again relationship with DBZ, it made my day when I watched those shows. At the time, I thought I was in heaven whenever I watched those channels. Little did I know that it would be all downhill from there.

Both CN and Nick have jumped the shark, BIG TIME! I'm not saying this because I'm not a kid anymore, I'm saying this because it's the cold hard truth. I'd rather watch an infant child puke his intestines out than watch 95% of what's on Nickelodeon now, and CN has aired live-action movies and will be premiering a live-action show on their channel. I thought this was CARTOON Network, not Cartoon and sometimes live-action movies Network. That channel's only saving graces are Toonami and Adult Swim.

I remember back when Toonami aired five days a week. I would get home from school and watch The Real Adventures of Jonny Quest, Sailor Moon, Thundercats, Voltron, and DBZ. Then, CN f***** up and introduced this "Miguzi" block. I was so heartbroken to find that this joke of a block, which, somehow, is still running to this day, replaced an awesome display of animation and relegated it to one night a week.

The last original series that CN had that I even considered good was Hi Hi Puffy AmiYumi and it was based on two J-Pop singers and that show's been cancelled.

Now onto [Adult Swim]. I followed it to an extent from the beginning. The first show I really paid attention to was Yu Yu Hakusho. I got into it like I did DBZ. The first 13 or so episodes aired on [Adult Swim] but they f***** up and had the show moved to Toonami, where I pretty much lost interest in the show. Over the last few years that I have kept up with the block, I primarily watched the anime series because their original programming, judging from the promos, looked like crap, except for maybe one or two shows and I still feel that way about their programming to this day. I will watch an episode of Family Guy or Futurama every now and then, but give me my anime on [as] and I will be happy. One other little thing I don't like about it is that the bigwigs claim that Adult Swim is its own channel separate from CN and that it just happens to air their programming on CN. If that's the case, they need to not air their block on CN and become its own stand alone channel for that claim to have any truth. By the way, they say that for ratings purposes.

In conclusion, I would like to say that bad business decisions screw us over in the end. I guess there's always Boomerang to fall back on and hopefully there will be a Nick Rewind channel coming up soon.

Agreed. With things the way they are nowadays though, I doubt we'll be seeing kid's shows of this quality for quite sometime.

Watched it for a while, wasn't much of a fan. It got far better in its final season though.

I actually liked the first season. Felt it got worse with season two, even more so with three, and then season four comes along and we have Kevin Conroy voicing Robin's father and Mark Hamill as the Joker. A Dark Knight Returns inspired episode, an appearance by Black Mask, Harley Quinn and the Joker singing, and the first appearance of the Justice League and Lucius Fox. Season four was delightful.

Watched it a few times. Left a bad taste in my mouth.

I don't think I've said a single thing in this post that was on topic.
