I was drawn to Potemayo because of it's strange name and diabetes inducingly cute, super-deformed, poop-like characters, but my expectations for the show were initially rather low. I was expecting at best another Binchou-tan, and at worst something like a sickly sweet anime version of Carebears or (ugh) another Lucky Star. Boy, were my expectations completely blown out of the water, I'm only two episodes in and this show is already awesome. With a cannibal chick, Guchuko's habit of randomly killing animals, and Mikan's unhealthy obsession with Moriyama, it's laugh-out-loud funny in an almost mean-spirited way, kind of like the original Di Gi Charat series. The humor is simple, but it's very effective. It's pretty wholesome too – I thought it was a kids’ show at first until I did some research and found out it airs at 1:30AM, so it’s obviously not. But regardless of its target audience, Potemayo is a cute, clean, and (most importantly of all) genuinely funny anime. I can really see it having a lot of cross-over appeal with people who normally wouldn’t be drawn to such nauseatingly cute cartoons.

Uh...one comment only:

That's what "Potemayo" stood for? And what the potato mayonnaise is potato mayonnaise anyway?

Alright mate... I'm now going to risk taking a stab at this show. I loved the original Di Gi Charat so I'm hoping you're on the mark with your comparison. Thanks for describing the show and its characters because I wasn't too impressed when I took a look at the Japanese site for the show. Though I'm going to differ from you and stick with calling it by its original Japanese title of "Potemayo". To me it just sounds more twisted that way. Anime smile

He named her Potemayo because she magically came out of his fridge while he was eating a potato mayonnaise croquette thingy. Is this a made up food or do people really eat this in Japan? It sounds pretty icky.

Heh, maybe it's just a personal preference, but I'd be much more inclined to pick up a DVD while browsing through anime at a video store with "Potato Mayonnaise" on the spine than Potemayo. Laughing

My mind must be in the gutter today, because I thought this thread was going to be about something extremely kinky and perverted. What a disappointment. Wink

So is this one of those series with a snowball's chance at surviving execution by boiling water or is this one of those "it'll probably be licensed" type series? I've kind of sworn off the likely-licenses as of late.

Given the last series I watched based on your recommendation my dear Princess panties was Dokuro-chan, which was wicked funny and quite delightful, I'm tempted to check this out. I love cute and I love twisted.

And that croquette actually looks kind of tasty. Pretty sure they do eat potato croquettes in Japan, though I'm not sure about this particular one.

It's closer to the former (basing this off of the popularity I've seen from it so far). I'm not really expecting it to be licensed, but I don't think the chances are next to zero.

It seems to be quickly gaining cult hit status on certain anime discussion boards, but I doubt it will ever achieve mass popularity. I'm guessing it probably won't be licensed, or at least not any time soon.

Yes, in Japan you will see people put mayonnaise on or in just about anything. Comparatively speaking, a bread product filled with mashed potato and mayonnaise doesn't seem odd at all. Here are the results (taken from whatjapanthinks.com) of a poll taken in Japan late last year. If #10 doesn't give you nightmares, then I don't know what will... Shocked

Q: What unusual food goes well with mayonnaise?

    1 Fried chicken and mayonnaise
2 Cold chinese noodles and mayonnaise
    3 Bread and mayonnaise
    4 Fried egg and mayonnaise
    5 Pasta and mayonnaise
    6 Rice and mayonnaise
7 Fried potato chips and mayonnaise
    8 Pizza and mayonnaise
    9 Sashimi and mayonnaise
    10 Natto and mayonnaise ---->

I am loving this show so far, BTW. While the look screams "cute!", the humor is frequently anything but. And the two little creatures behavior is hysterically funny because it is so classically catlike. Potemayo is the young cat who clings to a beloved human: she is normally playful and affectionate, but will puff up and hiss at anyone else who might be a rival for that human's attention. Guchuko is the semi-feral cat who hangs around your apartment complex: she will be cool and aloof, keeping out of sight for the most part, but will show her affection by keeping tabs on you and leaving a dead chipmunk on your doormat now and then.

After reading this you've got me interested in it now. The name is still pretty nasty to me though.

Oh, bleah!!! I like natto but that is hideous. I don't care if Kewpie Mayonnaise doesn't taste like real mayo... Natto and mayo should stand as grounds for divorce. (I heard an anectdote more than 25 years ago about a guy divorcing his wife because she put ketchup in everything. The proverbial straw that broke the camel's back was when she put ketchup in her milk.)

I saw episode 1 of Potemayo yesterday...my impression wasn't so positive.

I didn't think Potemayo was bad, it was just so...bizzarre. I'm glad it wasn't fanservice laden as I expected, but Potemayo was so weird...it confused me. The thing is that it shouldn't be so bizarre, but I found it as such. I found it kind of nauseating though. Plus, Mikan and Potemayo really annoy me. I didn't really find it funny either, and I liked Di Gi Charat TV. But Guchuko was awesome.

I just watched the first episode, and I thought it was really funny! I am a sucker for anything weird/funny/cute. I wonder how many episodes they will make of this.

I can see how one might think it would have fanservice considering that the manga is currently running in Comic High (home to the infamous Kodomo no Jikan), but... Bleh, the thought of Potemayo fanservice is pretty unappealing to me. Guchuko and Potemayo hardly even have bodies; they're like squishy little walking heads. They look more like cat-bug things than humans. It's chibi, not toddlercon.

Wow... Just got done watching the first episode. I thought it was so funny. I was laughing so hard when spoiler[Guchuko tried to tape the truffle]. BTW is her name a combo of two words like Potemayo?
