Regarding the recent news that Negima!? got licensed by Funimation... a big YAY! Now, I won't have to spend $100.00 per DVD to import the show, though I will miss not getting the pactio cards.
Anyways, anyone know when the DVDs will actually begin to see a state-side release? Does Funimation need to wait for the show to stop airing in Japan first? Any info would be appreciated, thanks.

They said its coming out in early '08, but no specific date has been given. Keep in mind that many of the shows they licensed in their "Kickoff" event in February still don't have solid dates or details. We probably won't see it for a while.

I had seen the first 5 or so episodes and I loved how action oriented it was as opposed to the original. I was excited to buy it hoping it would stay the same, but I read around on some forums and apparently after the first few episodes it's almost all comedy. I like Shaft's sense of humor, but I liked the show for the action first.

Better animation quality and screen directing too. The story seemed semi-lacking the later the series goes. But it's alright.

They time the humor elements rather well.

I've not seen this series yet but I know it is one of the top animes for me to look forward to. SHAFT is an excellent production company and Akiyuki Shinbo is one of the best anime directors out there. Negima! and Love Hina (early episodes were the only ones I saw) were awful and unwatchable and ruined a great manga series. Comparing Negima?! with Negima! will be the perfect example to show people the importance of the director and quality of animation when producing anime.
Plus, I like the drawing style (anime character designer) of the SHAFT version way better. It's excellent, maybe even better than the manga (which is hard to do, as Ken Akamatsu is also an excellent artist).
EDIT: Wait, why will we not get the pactio cards? I have no idea what is in the Japanese DVDs of Negima?! but historically Funimation is the one US licensing company that regularly puts collectible cards into their DVDs. For Moonphase we got 1 collectible postcard per episode, in the domestic release. If there are collectible cards in the Japanese DVDs we should rejoice that it was Funimation and not some other company (Geneon/ADV/etc) that licensed Negima?! because Funimation is the company that is regularly giving us collectible cards in our sets.

Well, they didn't do the cards for the first anime (thank goodness), but I'd guess they won't end up sticking the new series pactio cards in their LE releases because there's 3 per character (at least 90 total) and in Japan their being released like one at a time with various other Negima!? merchandise (if I understand correctly).

Correct. My best card so far is Setsuna's Armor Card which came with the 10 disc soundtrack box set. I actually got volume 5 of the Japanese DVD release a couple weeks ago but I have yet to actually open it and see what card it came with. That would be nice if they packaged it with goodies like they did Moonphase, but it's highly doubtful. As Dorcas said, there are too many cards, though really, the only ones I want are the Armor Cards.
I really wanted to get the Negima!? Limited Edition I-Pod but unfortunately that is only sold in Japan. Couldn't even get it on Amazon Japan. It came with Evangeline's Armor Card too!
Thanks for the info Hitokiri, appreciate it.

I've never seen the original Negima! series in Japan so I dunno what it sounds like but I've seen a couple episodes of the english dub on Funimation Channel. The dubbing is awful, especially for Negi who sounds undescribeably annoying. I really hope they change the dub voices entirely for Negima!? so that I can actually stand listening to it.

While I can tolerate the dub because of the liberal translation, I don't really like the voices for most of the dub characters (Asakura especially), but I can tolerate it. For as little personality as the characters had in the first series, Funimation seemed to put an effort in making each of them sound distinct. I'm pretty certain that I'll be watching it more frequently with the Japanese audio though.
