About the manga color thing, this HAS been done. Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanova ViviD and Force have colored editions. They look, IMO, quite poor. It just does not feel right.

When it comes to the Sunrise titles, what Justin said is definitely true for the older stuff like Outlaw Star and Escaflowne, but even Code Geass, which is a more recent show, seems to be stuck in this debacle.

yeah, there's the technicality fo manga authors/artitst being only skilled in black and white, most can't use colour effectiely and whenever they colour something it's limited to covers or something "simple", when the actual manga gets fully coloured it looks like an amateur's job, somehting that you'd find at deviantart. there are exceptions to the rule, some manga artists ramble about their experiences with coloring in the tankubon omakes as well. |

While Code Geass is certainly not as old as the other two, you have to remember that season 2 is almost 7 years old at this point. It's not really new either. |

With the increasing presence of tablets and PC editing tools, making digitized fully-colored mangas is, in theory, achieveable. However, most editing tools are somewhat cumbersome at entry-level software (and the difficulty just rises the more higher-tier the software is), thus maknig use of them on a weekly basis will be more time-consuming than time-saving.
Additionally, as stated in the article, it is tradition that keeps the mangas' black-and-white format, and that most manga artists today started, what else, in the traditional manner: with a pen & paper, not digital pens & touchscreens/smart devices. |

Not like a lot of Western comics (i.e. cape comics) have generally great coloring either in my opinion. Most have clashing color palettes that only serves to make it barely readable. I'm surprised my friend who's into comic books hasn't developed eye strain from years of reading tiny text in the midst of a splash of technicolor rainbow.
As for car decals, this activity is very popular in Japan and it is called itasha literally meaning "painful car". The garishness of the design leads to cringe from car purists and normal people alike, but otaku take pride in it. Look it up there's a lot of samples with their own take in creativity and uniqueness.  Companies and publishers turn a blind eye to them as much as they do with other fan created product like doujin books and games so for the most part, you won't be sued.

I don't mind simulcasting, because a reasonable sub translation can be whipped up and timed in a day or two (not that I've ever done it). Dubbing just seems more of an assembly line--They're hoping the work will "already be done" if the show turns out to be a sellable hit, but if it isn't, it's a lot of work over nothing. I don't expect Emmy-winning voice performances, but I still feel a little sorry for the VA's with no breathing room to get to know the popularity-hook of the character. |

I knew Itasha was a bit of a grey area also there are people who will make the decals for you for a fee if you can't make them yourself.

Well I like to add something into the conversation:
About Funimation doing simul-dub: Well if it's working for them then I have no problem so far. But I do agree with what Justin said. Also Funimation should watch the budget on doing these simulcast and simuldub. About getting Sunrise's anime back in the US: I'm not surprised, and I agreed with Justin that except for Cowboy Bebop and several Gundam series, it'll take a long time for Sunrise's anime to get back in the US. Lots of redtapes and contract issue. About the anime decal decoration on the cars: Like Paiprince said, that doesn't seem to be the issue in Japan since Itasha is big in Japan. So far I don't see any controversy over this and no copyright infringement lawsuit has been brought onto Itasha culture yet (Unless what I hear about TPP is true, and kiss those Itasha cars good bye in the future). About why manga is black & white: Yeah, I can understand why manga are sticking to black & white. If you want color manga, then Japan will have to go digital for that to happen and I'm glad Hameyadea brought this up:
Yes, and I know one country/Japan's neighbor that did this: South Korea. Anybody familiar with or have read manhwa? South Korea has taken manhwa to a whole new level, anybody know what webtoon are? Webtoon are digital manhwa with color. Before webtoons, manhwa used to be black and white (they used the same type of paper like Japan's manga did), but now thanks to digital technology and the internet, manhwa was "upgraded" with color into webtoons. I've talked to one of the moderator, Willag on this via PM (I also send some informations/videos about South Korea's Webtoons to ANN newsroom, and I'm not sure if ANN will report on it as a interest article). But if you want to see manga in color, webtoons will come close to that. If Japan's manga industry can transition manga into digital manga (or Japan's equivalent of webtoon like South Korea did), then you could see your manga in color in the future, but I'm not sure if that'll happen. I don't want to derail the topic any further, if you want to ask me about webtoons, PM me. But very interesting Answerman, can't wait for next week. |

I'm sure there's a lot of badly coloured manga out there (just with American comics) but I think the lack of color is more due to tight schedules. The color pages in Takehiko Inoue's Vagabond are superior to most American comics I can think of. Some 40-60 page French albums can take a year to finish and American comics are typically published in monthly 30 page "books" -of which roughly only 20 pages are actual comics.

Simuldub seems like suck a needless risk for Funimation. I've seen so many viewers complain about dubs and I doubt releasing them more quickly will remove those complaints.
Funimation did survive with anime for this long so I guess they have some idea of what they're doing, but this one worries me. How much DBZ money do they have stockpiled? |

I don't think you're derailing the topic: korean webtoons are certainly an alternative for those who want to read colored manga but would still wish they were a bit "out there", and there are some seriously interesting webcomics being released, Tower of God being probably the most famous out of all. Though I don't think japanese manga is going to transition to digital manga anytime soon, mostly because the industry of printed manga is much bigger than what South Korea ever had. Sure, they could try (there are actually many manga series being released through web only), but it's still doubtful that it'll happen. In any case, interesting Answerman this week as well. |
