I think deciding between fantasy or magic could be difficult, at least until a few examples are in place for both.
For instance, would you agree with Rayearth/Brave Story=fantasy and Happiness/Shuffle!=magic? Maybe "challenge" rather than "competition" for Tsuyoku naritai? |

hentai/erotica would be filtered using the current "Adults only" age rating, so I don't think a special genre is necessary for this.

Competition Noun 1. A business relation in which two parties compete to gain customers 2. An occasion on which a winner is selected from among two or more contestants. 3. The act of competing as for profit or a prize 4. The contestant you hope to defeat (source : Webster online) Compete Verb 1. Compete for something; engage in a contest; measure oneself against others. (source : Webster online) Even DBZ falls under definition 3 and 4, and it's surely about measuring oneself agains others. Besides, what genre would distinct DBZ from Yawara ? Or otherwise said, what genre would be chosen for Yawara ? (that of course from a non-native English point of view) Other question. To what number of genres would the choice be limited ? |

Though IMHO the category should be inclusive enough to encompass non–tsuyoku-naritai sports anime like Yawara, since they otherwise would need a separate (and IMHO, unnecessary) category. Other points: • Under supernatural I suggest you substitute "lycanthropes" for "priests", since the later is rather ambiguous. • Perhaps you might include "sword and sorcery" as one of the descriptors for fantasy. • As for themes, while free form sounds good, I would like to see a suggestion list of the most common ones (e.g., magical girl, mecha, harem) included on that submission form's page. • Lastly, while I would prefer a separate erotica category (so named to avoid semantic arguments over whether yaoi/yuri is "hentai", and to include series such as Weather Report Girl that are not explicit pornography, but include "strong sexual themes") I can accept the lack as long as the plan is to enable searching by age rating as a sole criterion (i.e., search for all "Adults only" anime without any modification, such as the need for a title string). Otherwise, it looks great! |

Shiroi Hane:
"challenge" is not a bad suggestion... woelfie: I see Yawara more as a sports drama (sports = theme) As it is the count stands at 17. I could add a few but I don't want too many. doc-watson42: The point of tsuyoku-naritai is exactly to exclude non–tsuyoku-naritai sports anime like Yawara. You wouldn't want Yawara grouped with DBZ, right? (BTW I'm not particularly fond of the name either.) Supernatural: What about substituting "priests" by "exorcism"? It's not only about monsters. Sword and sorcery: sounds good Themes: the submission form page will include the ~20 most common themes, dynamically generated from the DB. |

Possibly "ghost busting"—which is more evocative—instead? Also, I just noticed the misspellings "maybe-not-fictionl" and "occuring" in supernatural. Along the same lines, there has not been a hyphen in "science fiction" in decades. ^_^;
Sounds good. Edit: Changed wording for clarity and accuracy. Last edited by doc-watson42 on Fri Jul 06, 2007 10:45 pm; edited 1 time in total |

Do comedy, parody and satire really need to be separate genres? Aren't parody and satire just types of comedy?
If we can only use one of the three, then where exactly is the line drawn? Would Excel Saga be? |

<nods> Why not just use comedy as the genre, with satire and parody as descriptors/themes? More types for the themes may be found at Wikipedia's Comedy article. Edit: Upon further thought, I believe adding a "historical" genre is a good idea. And I still think an erotica genre is needed, as it perfectly fits the description "what kind of story it is". Also, another typo:
"in it". Just so that it does not become embedded in the code. ^_^; |

I think they are trying to get away from those broad terms. Seinen anime can fit into any number of genres. Berserk for instance would be best classified in the fantasy genre and maybe adventure, while a harem anime aimed at an older male audience would still usually best fit in the Romance genre. And they can always add certain themes to show the "color" as Dan put it, so that you don't have to worry about a kid friendly fantasy anime being automatically grouped with Berserk. Or at least I think that's it, someone will probably correct me if I am wrong. As for me I like the genres listed and I think it will really help in reducing some of the genre spamming. Air TV for instance once had both shounen and shoujo listed as genres when it is neither one. |

The thing is satire and parody don't have to necessarily be comedy. They often are of course but that doesn't mean they have to be. You can have non-comedy satires and parodies so I agree with Dan they should have their own genre. |

I'd also have to agree with this.
Yes, that's true. But many (actually most) anime that are parody/satire are comedy. So it would only make sense to me to include them as themes, not genres. It would work both ways then, not just one. |

The best example: both Berserk and Futari Ecchi are serialized in Hakusensha's Young Animal magazine. They are both seinen but have completely different stories. Shounen, shoujo, seinen and josei are more like age and demographic indicators instead of genres. |
