Saw this on opening day in December, and just finished reading Kakashi's epilogue novel! I loved the movie, as it was actually more show than tell. There were lots of little symbols that mixed in together to make one bigger meaning. I also thought that the growth of the characters was extremely enjoyable. I did laugh when Toneri floated away on a platform though.
The movie is a bit cheesy, but it did make me cry at a few points, and action scenes had me at the edge of my scene with the combination of voice work, music, animation, and more.
Glad to hear a reviewer not judge it on THIS ISN'T MY PAIRING SO THE MOVIE SUCKS THE END.
Srsly.

Haha, I think if the reviewer on this website judged/reviewed it based on that, they'd be fired.

The sheer amount of anger I've seen over that is amusing to me. I get that people might have had pairing they wanted to happen, but the way things turned out was pretty obvious. Docking it based on things that were never going to happen seems rather unfair.

Most Naruto fans - at least the ones that I see - express "anger" over the pairings because almost none of them made any sense. It's not a "MY FAVORITE PAIRING ISN'T CANON" rage and more of a "WTF, THESE PAIRINGS DON'T MAKE ANY SENSE" rage.

Great review! Glad to see I wasn't the only one who was unclear on why the villain was hell-bent on marrying Hinata and thought his plan was incredibly cliche.

Pretty much. Taking all pairing bias aside, this is still a clumsily put together retcon that eschews providing a grand threat in favor of a couple that had zero chemistry in the series and is mostly to appease fangirls.

That said, Naruto is a battle manga, so the fact that many fans raged about the pairings as if it was the only important thing in the entire series is a little stupid, in my opinion.

I hated the way Naruto ended. Nearly all of the pairings sucked IMO, and yes, that most definitely includes Naruto-Hinata. But more generally, it made me realize that Kishimoto really sucks at plotting romances. So, no, I won't be seeing this movie, and my interest in any further stories in the Naruto-verse is pretty much non-existent now.
There you go.

I agree that many of the pairings seemed random, but after seeing this movie, you may come to like Hinaruto.

Considering my favorite pairing in Naruto was a crack pairing I knew would never happen (Kabuto x Sakura), the ending to the series wasn't all that surprising to me. Plus considering how much time passed between the last chapter and epilogue, I thought it was logical that Naruto could've fallen in love with Hinata at the end, knowing that he would never be with Sakura because she only truly loved Sasuke.
However, I understand how people get over their favorite pairings. I see it with Fairy Tail a lot now. I'm sure once the series finally ends, people will likely be fighting over the final pairings (if there are any; Mashima does like to troll us at times) just as they have with Naruto. :p

Which is why focusing on a zero chemistry romance in lieu of a massive final threat is stupid.

Waw an ANN review that I agree with?! Madness!
I am actually very glad that this review didn't sum up to "NaruHina eww...2/10"
The movie is fantastic and I'm glad they filled in the gap in between the manga chapters. I now hope the epilogue novels get animated into films or high quality OVAs

In all honesty, it kinda goes to show how much the manga failed at its own mission when people stopped caring about its main plot and were more interested in Naruto and Hinata's relationship. This is best exemplified in Toneri, a dull villain that was clearly taken from the series' convoluted but also uninteresting mythology. The guy just has no presence, being little more than the narrative equivalent of a game boss put in so the player can have something to do. Meanwhile, most people are more interested in Hinata's romantic anxieties and Naruto's realization of how the quiet girl who looked up to him has in fact loved him since the day they first met. That's pretty heavy stuff and it's definitely a welcome break from the CONSTANT fighting in the series. And the fact that the post-credits scene is a better ending and a far better encapsulation of what Naruto wanted. In the end, Naruto never really wanted to be Hokage. What he wanted was to be loved and to be able to come home not to an empty house, but one where he had someone waiting for him. And he got that. Ending with him having a snowball fight with his family while having the camera on his kids' baby pictures was perfect way to show that his journey had come to an end.

C'mon, everybody knew that - t'was just a means to an end, to be noticed as a presence; he even constantly said so.

Really well written review. I enjoyed reading it.
I've only watched 3 Naruto movies (2 of which are the earlier ones), but this one is certainly one I'm interested in. AiddonValentine, I really like your reply especially what you described at the end. It is beautiful to imagine and I can't wait to actually watch it. Truthfully all I really cared about for the ending of this series is Naruto and his happiness and the fact that Naruto got the recognition he's always wanted and eventually found happiness (no matter who it was with) just makes me super happy haha~
