Well, the HMMay television series was planned as a ten-episode series from the start (at least, all of the numbering I've seen, including the title cards—which state "#/10", where "#" equals the episode number), and the OAV is a bonus (as stated in the episode description; the literal translation into English of the key word is "privilege"), so technically it is not an unbroadcast episode. Still, I can see how they are annoying to encyclopedists.

Also, I am wondering about splitting out the Science Lessons from the main Gunbuster (#466) entry—is this something that makes sense? The original four Science Lessons were released with the OAVs, but the final two were part of the laserdisc box set put out in 1994 or 1995, and are technically separate films.

The problem is that there is no clear line between "bonus episode(s)," "omake," and standalone OVA. They differ in various degrees:

1. Unaired, same-length episode(s) with stories within the broadcasting sequence e.g Kamichu!. These are usually regarded as part of the TV series and not listed separately.

2. Unaired, same-length episode(s) that come with the final video release e.g. Elfen Lied "episode 14" and HMMay.

3. Unaired, same-length episode(s) that come alone and after the final video release e.g. Kasimasi. These are usually regarded as standalone OVA.

4. Side stories and parodies, usually comedic e.g. Maria-sama ni wa Naisho, Shakugan no Shanatan, and parodies included in Utawarerumono DVD (not listed separately).

5. Recap episodes e.g. Chobits OVA. Chobits is a particularly tricky case, for the first two recap episodes were broadcasted but not included within the initial 6th (R1) or 8th (R2 & R3) releases of DVD; instead, they were shipped along with the 7th (R1) or 9th (R2 & R3) disc which contains all three recap episodes and Chibits.

BUZZER BEATER (2007) (#8137) is a sequel to
BUZZER BEATER (#4923).

Thought I would make that clear, since it's listed as a "remake" of the 2005 show.

I chose to trust your judgment, but could you please provide more info to support your claim?

It seems that Shusaku Replay (#3953) is actually a remake of Shusaku (#3952), rather than a direct sequel. See this forum thread and Masterchief's Hentai Neko review (though I must admit that I have not seen any of the series).

On the topic, what are the possible classifications of related anime? I know that there are the categories "related", "sequel", "spinoff", and "remake", but is there anything else?

Hi you guys.
I tried to submit "Detective Conan: A Challenge from Agasa!
Agasa vs Conan and Detective Boys," which is the seventh OVA but it keeps telling me that the format is wrong. I have already submitted the sixth OVA which was accepted.
I say this here, because this anime is related to "Detective Conan" or "Case Closed." This site should verify my info.

Thank you.

The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that you are submitting it as "Detective Conan: A Challenge from Agasa! Agasa vs Conan and Detective Boys (OVA)", rather than "[title] (OAV)".

We have:
* part of (part of a collection/anthology)
* used to make (e.g. Macross was used to make Robotech)
* serialized in (ran in a manga magazine)
* sequel of (direct continuation of the story)
* prequel of (story that happens before the original)
* spinoff of (same universe, focusing on different characters)
* alternate retelling of (same basic premise but the story goes in another direction)
* remake of (same core story with "new and improved" animation/music/etc)
* adapted from (format change: manga to anime or anime to manga)
* alternate ending for (assumes same story but changes ending)
* related to (exact type of relationship is unknown)

That dates from several years ago so I don't entirely remember why I separated remake / alternate retelling / alternate ending. Maybe you could consider that an alternate retelling is part remake + part alternate ending.

The Wikipedia articles for Rune Soldier, Record of Lodoss War, and Legend of Crystania claim that Louie the Rune Soldier (manga) (#3445) and the anime based on it (#895) take place in the same world as Lodoss and Crystania, but on a different continent; all three have the writer Ryo Mizuno in common. Can anyone confirm or deny this assertion?

Let me resubmit it again
Thank you for the hint.

All these Unico movies need to be linked together. Presented below in chronological order:

Unico: Cloud And White Feather (movie)
Unico (movie)
Unico: To The Magic Island (movie)

Kimagure Orange Road TV series needs to be directly linked to the Pilot it originated from.

Kimagure Orange Road (TV)
Kimagure Orange Road: Shonen Jump Special (OAV)

Immoral Sisters: Blossoming[ (OAV)/url] (#6190) is not a sequel of [url=http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=2600]Immoral Sisters (OAV) (#2600) / Immoral Sisters 2 (OAV) (#3477), but an alternate retelling of—none of the characters are the same, nor does there seem to be any other continuity other than the premise of "two sisters and incest".

Perhaps proof (other than my sworn word) can be found at or via Getchu.com—my hay fever is acting up too much for me to concentrate enough to find out. ;_;

The Hentai Neko page you linked has this comment:

Masterchief wrote:
Shusaku Replay is the sequel to Shusaku, as you likely figured out. However, it doesn't take place after the first one. Instead, it is an independent story starring the same characters. Somehow, the story manages to be even more silly and contrived and the sex manages to be even more well-depicted.

The underlined sentence fits the definition of "alternative retelling."

Yes, and the continent is called Forceria (フォーセリア). In addition to the Japanese page, Wikipedia even has a French page for it.

Done.

An "alternative retelling" shares the same character(s) and the background, but the story has another direction. A spinoff has the same background but may or may not share character(s). However, the sisters in Immoral Sisters: Blossoming do not even have the same uniform as the original's, so I changed it to merely "related to" until new evidence says otherwise.

Sorry—I was using Dan42's definition seven(?) posts above.
