How can you possibly do a review of Bubblegum Crisis and not mention the fantastic music?! I was introduced to the series by an old video tape I found at my local Blockbuster back in the day and I rewatched that opening song Hurricane at least five times (which inevitably lead to re-watching the episode(s)) before the video was due back, and I re-rented it/extended the rental before rapidly watching all the rest. I taped the songs to cassette until I could find the mp3s online and eventually imported the Vocal Collection. Fantastic 80s synth that matched wonderfully with the animation and fight scenes and the personalities of the Knight Sabers themselves.
I find that watching 8 before episode 7 then finishing with 7 leads to a greater sense of completion to the show, given the sudden end to the 13 episode plan. Still great show I hope more people expose themselves to. |

Just a little thought about the new format. It might be nice to provide the release options and prices for the titles under review, and not just those out this week. It does bring up issues and accusations you are simply trying to sell through the titles and whatnot I guess. I however, prefer convenience of not having to look up the title again to find out what is available for it.
I have myself a copy of the Bubblegum Crisis BD, excellent release. Particularly as it has extras! And lots of them. A feature sadly almost completely absent in today's releases. Really enjoying Bubblegum Crisis so far. The art direction is fantastic.And the animation,and fight scenes are excellent. Also a big fan of Kenichi Sonoda's character designs.My biggest issue is how you that don't really learn that much about the characters.Other than that am having a blast with it

Out of curiosity, when did NISA change its packaging size? The last thing I got from them was in October (Hanasaku Iroha movie) and it was the "standard" NISA size. I am a bit sad to see the old size go the way of the dinosaurs, but if that's what they felt needed to be done, then so be it. Just wondering if that was the first release with the new size. |

Yeah, the CCS box is the only NISA release I have. I've heard so much about their big boxes and was oddly disappointed in the moment. (It didn't help that the box TRSI chose to ship it in was enormous.) |

Ha, ok. This is a good point, and more similar to how Shelf Life used to be styled, though at some point, I decided it was redundant because clicking on the title goes straight to the release page. In general, I'm trying to be better about mentioning where people can watch anime online. (Bubblegum Crisis is available on Hulu, btw http://www.hulu.com/bubblegum-crisis), but I can make a more concerted effort to do both.
I did pay lip service to the "copious dance scenes," which I personally couldn't get enough of, but yeah... the music is pretty great. "Hurricane" reminds me a lot of one of my all-time favorite 80s songs, "Better Off Dead" by E.G. Daily, which was used in the soundtrack for the movie by the same name. There's a lot of 80s songs that I love, but somehow, "Better Off Dead" is the one song that to me perfectly encapsulates the 80s... and I think "Hurricane" has a lot of that same energy. |

Well, the first OAV was released in 1987, but the last one didn't come out till 1991, according to ANN entry. Took all those years to finish. |

I think this might be a recent thing, as of CCS and Toradora, like Alan said... although... Love Live came out after that, and it was in the big size... I actually like the small(/standard) size a lot... I've always found it somewhat annoying having to figure out how to put NISA stuff on my shelves, and I don't think the smaller size diminishes the impact of the artbooks at all. |

To me Valvrave is a ridiculous written show with pretty visuals and nice music. I was immensely entertained by the first season. The second season was less bombastic but still entertaining. The only thing that disappointed me was the conclusion.
Thanks for saying this because for some people the standard size of NISA releases has diminished their overall quality. I love that my Toradora! LE BD/DVD can fit on my shelves, and I am waiting for my Eccentric Family set to arrive. |

Lots of CLAMP series; very cool, Ashlee. I ended up selling 90% of my manga over the last year, but I kept my Tokyo Babylon series because it has always been one of my favorites. Sometime ago, I was lucky enough to get a Tokyo Babylon art book autographed by the CLAMP ladies from that particular era. It is one of my most prized possessions. You have some very cool shelves. Keep collecting, even when gravity is against you!

In regards to the second season of Valvrave, I loved it. It's not quite as good as the first season, but that's only because I thought that they were rushing things somewhat near the end. That said, both seasons came very close to getting the highest rating from me and I look forward to owning both of them on BD (can't quite afford them just yet).
And I've been on the fence about Bubblegum Crisis for a while now, but this review is making me think that I should just get it already. That's quite some collection, Ashlee. Loving all the CLAMP stuff! It's also making me remember that I need to check one of my bookshelves because it's been sagging in the middle a bit

I tried the first episode of the Eccentric Family but here's the problem with the show: You point out that one of the raccoon dogs spend his life as a frog, completely letting the fact that the main character raccoon dog, male, spends his life as a female teenager, seem incidental.
The frog is normal, yeah, that's fine. Probably more to the point that he's silent and closed off from the rest of his species {raccoon dogs. I can't let that one go. They're not humans, they're a class of, I want to say rodent but they're probably closer to canines} while the other one wants to mingle with the humans. As the perfect example of everything wrong with Japan. Not as a sex/age group but as a fetish. I had no problem with his father being made into stew but I did have a problem with the female grand wizard {...} knowingly kiss the male animal in the body of the teenage female. How am I supposed to take that, what level am I supposed to be sickened by it? "Well like him, the situation's very confused." No, it's stupid, the basis for xenomorph stories is a strong sense of self; You know what you are at all times. I hate this series for passing over the fact they gave an identity crisis to that which needs identity in order to exist. Less "I think therefore I am" but more "I am therefore I don't bark." Damn folklore crap makes for poor storytelling as well. Sometimes there are rules, sometimes they can freely change or get shape locked and don't even ask about reproduction or how they could even survive as a species outside the first generation {they're racist xenophobes, I don't know but they really would have to be, just look at Engaged to the Unidentified}... for thousands of years. What was the selling point? "They're a family." They're also vermin. |

Ooh, you have the second CCS movie

I have the Madman release of the series from a few years back, but couldn't get the first movie until Discotek/Eastern Star released it again last year. Does anyone know if they plan to release the second movie as well? I want to complete my CCS collection. The big NISA boxes do look nice, but it irks me that I can't sort them next to similar anime in my collection because of their size. |
