I use ANN as my default homepage, and have for a long time. The past couple of days I've noticed something new. Every so often, when I open my browser, I get a message (like a splash-page) in my browser window (I use Firefox) that says "Checking your browser before loading Anime News Network," along with some other things. Is this something new that the site has started doing? It seems really suspicious, since I can't figure out what the site would need to check my browser for.

If my understanding is correct, then what you are describing has to do with Cloudflare.

More specifically it has to do with a DDoS protection mode provided by Cloudflare. Yeah, some sonovabitch is trying to DDoS us. We know that message is annoying but it's better than a dead website.

Somebody trying to distribute DDOS to ANN, I hope it's not the Lizard Squad (the one that took down the PSN during Christmas).
Any idea who is trying to attempt to send the DDOS to ANN, and what's the motive? |

I think that this is also breaking the podcast feed, since mine won't update since this started.

I don't think there's been a new podcast since this started...

Yes, I've been getting that message periodically as of now.
@Dan42 What does "DDoS" stand for? |

DDoS stands for Distributed Denial of Service. Basically, people (usually bots actually) flood the server with so many requests for information that it can't cope and goes offline.

I see... Thanks for the info. Whoever is trying to overpower ANN with the Distributed Denial of Service motion must have some sort of beef with them for some reason, I'm willing to bet... |

Or just is being a dick or wants to show how big their e-penis is. Whatever the case is it's not the first time people has tried to/have DDoS ANN. Hopefully they'll just get bored and go do something else more constructive with their time. Like stick their finger in an electrical socket or rant on IMDB/Youtube. I have never understood the whole aspect of being big and bad on the internet by screwing up a website. Oooooo you're soooo awesome now, you messed up a website on the internet! That'll show people!!! I just don't get how that proves a thing to anyone. |

It's actually an extortion attempt. "Give me this or I will take your site offline."

Out of curiosity, what is the 'this' that they want?

That's surprising, I didn't know someone (or a group) want to extort ANN. I wondered if this is the same person/group that put DDOS on CR. |

I get the same thing.
It keeps "Checking your browser..." until I allow cookies. I usually only enable cookies on need-to basis, like making this post. So now I have to log in each time to post etc while keeping 'Remember me' unticked, and log out afterwards. Not much of an inconvenience, but still... |
