Well it would appear as though I have been telling you all a lie. In my introduction I commented on "pokemon" being my first introduction to anime. However that appears to be wrong...by about five years.
Twas something I thought about...then forgot. And remembered today. Over a decade ago I watched the film Unico up my Nan's house numerous times. Being about five I enjoyed it. Though looking back the villain did seem a bit un cartoon like- a bit like Kiriyama from the Battle Royale manga rather then cartoon blockhead villain. I can vaguely remember that I really loved that film. It's amazing what random things your memory can throw at you from nowhere.
So basically, far from me knowing what I'm talking about, I've actually enjoyed one of the works of Osamu Tezuka without ever realizing it and as such I can now say I've been partially into anime for over a decade
So any other tales like that or similiar? Or events of pure forgetfulness?

It's not really forgetfulness, but my first "anime" was something I didn't know could be considered anime at first, which was The Last Unicorn movie. While it was produced by an American company, all the animation was done in Japan by Topcraft and so I do consider it anime, which means it displaces Sailor Moon from this role.

My first anime ever was when I was reeeallly really little, and it was a kids show called The Adventures of the Little Prince. Gosh I loved that show. At the time I was so young I had not even heard of 'anime', let alone knew that TLP was one.
And just recently I discovered that another childhood favourite of mine, Serendipity the Pink Dinosaur is also anime! Joyous!

While I generally credit DBZ as my 'first anime' and the Slayers as what moved me into the fandom, that's based on the idea that I knew I was watching anime at the time.
If you ignore that- I also watched The Last Unicorn growing up, along with the Lil' Bits and The Noozles on Nick Jr. Apparently tho', my first anime was some variant of Gatchaman- Mom spotted a DVD of it while I was browsing somewhere and said we used to watch that as kids (although she doesn't know for sure which version we watched.) Thing is, I don't remember it. Not one lil' bit. So I'm not sure it if counts at all...

Eruanna, wow The Adventures of the Little Prince. Yeah, I think I watched that show too when I was little. Along with a bunch of other super SUPER old shows that I also liked a lot, but I can't remember the slightest thing about what any of them were about anymore. But I'm certain I saw them. What a weird feeling. -_-;
Hrm, makes me feel sort of sad. If I can't remember anymore, I feel like the little kid who watched those shows and loved them is dead now.... -_-; He's gone...

Voltron was the first anime I've ever seen.
DBZ and Gundam Wing are the two shows that introduced me to the world of anime although I didn't think much of it and stayed away from other shows like Sailor Moon, because I thought they were stupid.
THen about a year and a half later, in the summer of '01, Toonami launches this show called Tenchi Muyo. The first promo, featuring Tenchi walking up the stairs to the shinto shrine, made me think "boy does this show look stupid". And then a month later, they aired the first real promo, and this was the line that got me...
"And he will come to find that six women living in the same house, all have the hots for him."
And thus did I see the light that is Otakudom. Tenchi Muyo hooked me, reeled me in, skewered and grilled me, and served me with a side of butter. I continue to prioritize harem animes to this day.

When i was little I'd wake up super early in the morning and watch Sailor Moon. I didn't realize it was actually an anime until much later.
As sort of an OT
I also used to watch Power Rangers and I had no idea that it was basically ripped right out of Japanese shows. It's funny, I teach Japanese preschoolers who like both Power Rangers and the shows that they come from and on some of the merchandise that says "Power Rangers" they swear by the Japanese show that it comes from.
EDIT: And actually doing a little research the animation coordinator for The Last Unicorn, Toru Hara, was a producer with Studio Ghibli as well, and most of the animators worked with studio Ghibli as well so the classification of whether or not it's an anime gets a little blury. I guess it's kind of like Oban Star Racers. It's a cross-cultural production.

I always though my first anime was DBZ or Pokemon when I was younger, but I realized that was when I came back and lived in the US.
I lived in Germany for a while (mid elementary age) and remember watching "Robotech" on VHS. I had no idea it was anime or that it was a mix and edit of multiple giant robot anime. I didn't really grow up in my youth with american tv, not until late elementary-early middle school which is when I first caught DBZ, etc. But I will always remember those Robotech tapes, though I was probably too young to understand any of it.

I always remember making sure I got up in time to watch Robotech in the mornings. It usually was on before school and new ones were I think on the weekends. I was always in to the space/scifi/action stuff, and between that and watching shuttle launches all the time, I was eating it up. And Robotech by comparison was the best there was at the time. Of course I didn't know what anime was, I don't even think it was a word in the eighties. But I do remember alway liking the 'first' episodes(36(or as we know the Macross saga/section)) the best. So even at a young age I was a decerning viewer.
I remember watching Voltron, and Thundercats as well. Although I think I liked Voltron Toys more than anything, they were awesome. I had the complete Voltron, the original big version. I guess looking back I should have kept better care of it. But it served its purpose, and got played with a lot by my friends and myself. Voltron's fate ended up lost due to an unfortunate battle with an evil space monster known to the universe as Snockers(my dog). He fought well, but eventually was defeated, dying with holes in its armor and covered with goo.

I'm pretty sure that early on, Hayao Miyazaki had some involvement in Little Nemo in Slumberland, which was favorite movie of mine as a kid. But apparently creative differences came between Studio Ghibli and Disney(?) and Miyazaki withdrew from the project. So it's kinda anime in a way, but I'm not sure how much of it ended up being produced in Japan or how much of it was Disney.

You watching The Last Unicorn doesn't count as being your first anime. It only counts as your first anime when you know that it's anime. Otherwise, my first anime would have been Speed Racer back in the '70s. And trust me, I had no clue that it came from Japan until after I watched Sailor Moon.
