I'm not a fan of the double-underlined text either. I have clicked through to the InfoLinks website where they let you turn off the feature, but it never lasts more than a couple days and then I have to click through to turn it off again.
I will say that I do use AdBlock Plus for general browsing. I try to keep it disabled for ANN, but sometimes I turn it back on when the underlines get to me, or more often, when I get sick of staring at voluptuous anime gals every day of the week. (this is an exaggeration, but sometimes it does feel like we get a whole run of several fanservice-y ads in a row, and while one mixed in with other less provocative skins might not bother me, having to see it constantly does get on my nerves.) I know that's not really something you have control over, and maybe I'm being too sensitive... but if there was(/is?) a way to switch to an alternate ad skin at those times, that would be great. I do like the site-skins in general because it's fun to see the art/design and gives the site more personality than plain white.
I remembered there being some a while back—on the main page they show up with a label "Ad" in a different (yellowish) colour box than the news/interest/ep review labels, which in my condensed text-only view for ANN shows up quite distinctly. This was one example article I found, another was a RightStuf gift guide. The content seems to be relevant, and I have no problem with them being there. (both examples are from Nov 25; I haven't seen any since and had to scroll back that far to find them again.) |

I just want to mention that I really hate the fake news "around the web" ads that have been appearing at the bottom of articles lately - they're basically click bait links for fake articles about anime or video games. I keep mistaking them for legit articles and the site it links to is icky.
But! I also want to say I really love what ANN does with the banner ads. They usually look pretty cool and are informative of new releases. I actually disabled ads for ANN on my ad blocker because the site looks so sad and plain without them. |

I'm with other folks in that I hate ads that include sound. The ones that do it on mouse-over are always on accident because I got too close on something I actually wanted to click on. The ones on load end up bothering me because I tend to look at multiple pages at once, and suddenly noise is coming from one of them. So far, neither has been an issue for me on this site.
I did put down that I don't like the double underlined ads in text. While it is easy enough not to click on them, it breaks the flow of whatever I'm reading to see something masquerading as a relevant link when I know it's not. The advertorial question made me think. I ended up going with the option that if there have been any, then I haven't noticed them. So, either they get buried in other content before I see them, or they aren't labelled very well and I haven't realized what they are. The question about ads that are irrelevant to the purpose of the site also made me pause. I ended up going with a more pragmatic answer on that one. I hate seeing ads about celebrities or whatever, but I also recognize that if the sites I visit absolutely have to include these things to stay afloat, then I can just ignore them. Basically, I know I can safely ignore anything that appears at the bottom of an article because I know it isn't ANN's content. For the most part, I don't mind most of the ads on here. Being made aware of a new Right Stuf sale or that a show I've been waiting for finally has a release date is actually helpful, and some of the ads actually serve as nice decoration. |

Apparently there have been only five advertorials, and the last was the Right Stuf gift guide nearly a month ago.
That might be why some of us have not noticed them. I just disabled Adblock Plus for all of ANN. I will see how that works for me. If I do not have any serious problems I will keep it disabled here. |

ANN is one of those few sites where I actually want to see advertisement, because in a way these advertisements are also news, so I did disable the adblock here. The banners are brilliant, and a very nice way to see info on the upcoming releases. Ditto with advertorials - they are clearly labeled, but they are still relevant. Pretty much anything that has to do with anime and things that are related to it is a fair game.
The unrelated ads... they have been mostly bearable, but I honestly don't understand the point of them, in that I can't see people actually being influenced by it. The underlined stuff needs to die a horrible death, though. |

I actually really like the ANN ad-skins surrounding the top and sides. It looks nice. The Queen's Blade one not long ago was hawt Relevant advertising is also good too, so are advertorials.
I use AdBlockPlus, but I've whitelisted ANN. However, I'm only barely tolerating some of the other non-related ads. I don't mind the content at all--hell, I wouldn't mind drugs porn and gambling--but it's just the method of advertisement: auto-playing videos, sound, and expanding ads are annoying. The in-line ad links, especially those that pop up on hover are annoying. I would appreciate if the methods were not intrusive. For example: media is fine, but no autoplaying please! No expanding ads. No pop-up on hover. |

I'm a subscriber (at the moment), but I've used ABP since we started getting fanservicey site skins that wouldn't pass what I would consider SFW. Until those skins are banned, or non-subscribers can choose to keep their blank skin (I hate having the skins at all, myself) permanently (not the current "it'll stay until a new skin comes up" option), I'm never turning off ABP.

I don't have any real issues with ads here. Only the large ads that are on the edges that usually advertise anime from large companies (like now there's Cowboy Bebop for me) are slightly annoying because I sometimes accidentally click them.

Even though I decided to become a subscriber to give something back to ANN and its great content, I do not mind adds because I am aware that someone has to pay the bills of this site.
I think it is a nice gesture to do this survey on ads, but everyone who uses this site should be able to stomach some adds in exchange of the content we get. And we are getting this content for free (unless you decide to get a fairly cheap subscription). |

Well, if that's your threshold, then nothing on the site is guaranteed SFW as many articles contain similar imagery. But it is working in one way since the skins did motivate you to become a subscriber right? I'm assuming because you blocked it, but you wanted to give something back to ANN. |

I took the survey just now, the ads I have problem are those "blue underline" ads that pop up when your mouse arrow goes over it. I can list more, but I don't want to waste time.

I agree with that. The reason that I had been using Adblock Plus is mostly because the advertising graphics eat up too much of my data allocation. The presence of the ads does not bother me, but the graphics are almost always excessive, for me. I am really experimenting right now to see if I can keep ABP disabled here, but if the ads use too much data they will have to go. |

I also find the advertising related to anime fine.

I said "no" no Adblock not realising that it had snuck the default filters on.. (I run it on my work PC but with no filters enabled just so I can easily block specific images should I need to, like avatars that are close to the SFW line etc.)

First of all thanks to ANN for allowing us to give some feedback.
In general I don't have a problem with some Ads, but when Ads interfere with my ability to read articles--and I'm talking about any site--then why should a viewer bother going to a website or turning off the adblocker? If the Ad is animated, makes sound, has pop-ups, etc then it interferes to some extent with my ability to read. I have "allow some non-intrusive advertising" on AdblockPlus, and occasionally I turn off the adblocker and click on a few ads to try to be supportive. I don't like advertorials as they are often dishonest in their presentation. However, if it was a limited amount and clearly labeled then I could stomach it. I'm ok if the Ads aren't directly related to anime, even though it can sometimes be a little disconcerting. The double-underline ones are just bad. I've considered getting a subscription to ANN and its the only website that I've ever thought about doing that. Perhaps for the new year, after the holidays and the coffers have been refilled. |
