It was a cool interview and I liked how he talked about the fans here but about the more world map skyrim style game I honestly think it's not a bad idea but only if it's so the world can be seen 360 on field instead of an aerial view of non scaled monsters on fields with you running into them to instigate battle. Other than that DON'T change Tales

Oh the HEAVENS!!
Typical situation of desiring and finding attractive what you dont have at home.
Juts like men from counties in which they have blondes everywhere, they find latinas and their hot blood so attractive while the men there desire so much blondes and have blonde babies with blue/green eyes.
No, leave that stuff for darn western rpgs. I want my jrpgs to remain that JAPANESE, even more the tales of series dont need to change anything, keep them coming as they are, dont RUIN the series just like square enix has screwed up going after a certain western gamers that dont give a shit about jrpgs anyway, dont alienate real fans of jrpgs.
I think I speak for most of us jrpg lovers that feel attached to them because of the japanese appeal, If I wanted them to be like those westen rpgs, I would play those instead.
Tales of need to remain as they are, play with the battle mechanics if you wish, but the Tales are are still true jrpgs, their formula is perfected and I want them to remain just as they are, forever.
Look like hr understands that Tales of dont need to change anything thou, but I dont waste time to make Japanese western games, it most likely wont work, its not the same a skyrim-esque game by a western studio than a western wannabe rpg made by a japanese developer, it will almost surely not sell and it wont appeal to either type of fans.

And open world is indeed very attached to the western world. Open world and doping whatever you like is not somersetting common nor proper of japanese developers that create games driven more in story and character development, that do not go well hand in hand with the japanese spirit rather than create games and that let you do whatever you like.
You can see the full extend and the closest you can really go when you a real japanese game with open world implementations: Ryu ga Gotoku/Yakuza, and its very clear why a true japanes cannot really implement an open world environment fully.
We also see the disastrous implementation in FFXIII, that was not that well received by either the Japanese or the westerner fandoms.
As a result of the open world genre being so rooted in the western gaming world, how many times we have westerns critisized japanese games because they dont have enough freedom and the games are linear?
While Baba does not say we will change Tales, its worrying enough that he feels attractiveness for western like rpgs to the extend of wanting to make a game with those elements and having to remind himself that the Tales of games dont need to change, its worrying for me yes, when he feels he needs to explore other things I would rather have him quit his involvement in the tales of and then focus on whats captivating his attention as to not have him distracted while producing the Tales of series.
What I am reading indicates he is tired of the Tales of series which can have an impact in the future creation of the games, I rather have him quit if that is the case and not jeopardize any future games.
So far I have big 0 issues thou, so as long as his vision is entirely focused on creating more quality Tales of games I am fine, he has worked on a LOT if not ALL games for quite a long time and after all.
I rather have him tell us that he is striving to make another quality Tales of game rather than telling us he likes western rpgs, that he wants to work in making one eventually and remind us and himself that the tales of series has a formula that does not need to change.

This is overgeneralizing a bit. I don't see how open world design goes against the "Japanese spirit". There are plenty of Japanese developers that can do open world rpgs, Xenoblade and Dragon's Dogma are good examples. And there are Western developers can do a traditional JRPG, like Child of Light. I don't see why Japanese developers can't do an open world game if they want to. Also, what's wrong with the Yakuza games? they're perfectly fine open world games.

Relax As you said, Hideo Baba has been working on the Tales games for a long time. He knows what fans expect, so I don't think anyone should be worried about later Tales games turning into the Witcher or Mass Effect. Besides, if he does want to do another type of rpg, it's not going to be a Tales game but a different IP. It's possible that in future he could continue working on Tales games and other games at the same time.

Sure, go ahead and make western-style RPGS... As long as you keep making JRPGS.
The Tales series tops my RPG favorites, so I'd be lost and sad without them. :3

Well that would be interesting to see more JRPGs playing more like Skyrim and Dragon's Dogma. Good luck to the producer for this ambitious idea.
