Alright, everyone acts way too hysterically with these things. Yes these people are unfortunately threatened. And yes, we should be condemning the perpetrators.
However, everyone needs to realize this. PEOPLE GET THREATENED EVERY SINGLE DAY. Male or female, this is something that has happened since the beginning of civilization. And with the anonymity of the Internet, it's even easier to say whatever the hell you want. The majority of these threats are hot air, and hardly anyone ever acts upon them. Can you imagine how many threats people like Obama get every day? He's male, he's in a position of high power, and you know what? NO ONE CARES. However if some female artist gets a handful of threats, all of a sudden it's front and center. It's the same thing with ebola. No one cared when thousands of Africans died of it, but when a FEW people in America get it, we're all panicking. The hypocrisy and idiocy is stunning. This should also be stating the obvious, but for some reason this point isn't getting through. A handful of threats do not represent the majority of people. Using the hasty generalization fallacy is completely idiotic and never solves anything. |

 This really sucks; anime and manga are supposed to be my escape from this kind of turmoil in the news.
I hope they catch this guy ASAP. ALL threats are serious issues, and must handled appropriately. |

I'm confused. Kuroko no Basket is a shounen manga made by a male mangaka aimed at little boys. What would that have to do with female mangaka? The motive behind the Kuroko no Basket incident had nothing to do with women. And how do you know the details of what this threat was and what the motivation was? It sounds as if you're painting a narrative that doesn't exist for the sake of starting an argument. |

I believe this is what I see people on this forum call the "Not All" retort. Unfortunately, that's just the way the news works. The average viewer does not care if hundreds of foreigners die each day. It only catches attention when it happens to us. For example, the big news buzz a few days ago when the first US soldier death during the ISIS invasion. All the civilians over there who perished were not reported about, just marked down as a number. But when one soldier dies, his name, rank, and entire biography are in the news. It's what brings in views and hits. Likewise, gender issues are a hot topic right now. Exclusively ones against women, I should clarify. You can already see people in this thread try to spin it to be about gender when we know literally nothing about the threat or motive, and indeed even try to retroactively revise past incidents like the KuroBasu one which had nothing to do with women or what they enjoy, but was about some mentally ill person who was jealous of the mangaka's success. I love how the standard Japanese police response to anonymous threats isn't "Okay, let's beef up our presence at the venue and be sure to run a security sweep beforehand," but instead is "Okay, let's run away like frightened little girls and bury our heads in the sand."

I don't think it is fair that people believe that since someone can get over being threatened that others do not have the right to be upset. It seems you want to highlight women in particular; I am pretty sure men have been threatened and thus afraid as they have every right to. I also find it to be a good thing that the signing was cancelled in response. A public threat means that not only the individual threatened could be harmed but others in the crowd. The president obviously has plenty of security and then some so he's not really a balanced example compared to an artist at an autograph session. It is also hypocritical for you to state that a few don't represent the majority while saying not a single person cares about Africans dying of Ebola. |
