Not sure why SLJ was in this. I can't imagine they had a budget to pay him a lot. Particularly as it is essentially a direct-to-video film.
And so far the verdict is not good. 0% on Rottentomatoes. 19 on Metacritic. That isn't just bad, it is awful.

On the plus side, a zero-percent Tomatometer means ads for this movie (which is hardly being advertised anywhere so far as I can tell, but I don't have cable right now) can legitimately claim "Critics are unanimous!", and technically be telling the truth.

Everybody does that. I'm half expecting:

to show up like this in a year or so:

I had a moment of whiplash when I read the name Brian Cox but I quickly realized it couldn't possibly be that Brian Cox (you know, the physicist/author/frequent BBC science program host)...

They played this at Otakon this year. Wasn't happy with it.

He was also Afro Samurai. I'm guessing he's got some affinity for anime.

He's in it because he was one of the individuals pushing to get it made. As for why that's simple because he is an anime fan. Kite being one of his favorites.
As for the rating it was never intended to be a big budget blockbuster. This film was made on a very small budget. More of a "lets just make it a cheap as we can just because we want to and screw the critics".

I don't think SLJ knew a goddamn thing about it. In that video where he was introducing the trailer he was talking about some graphic novel that doesn't exist. Actors do just take shit jobs because they offered a paycheck (see: Nick Cage), they do it all the time, and this is just one those "should have stayed DTV" examples. I'm inclined to believe fans of Kite would probably just hate it all the more for being a low budget production with no style of its own.

How many theatres was Kite even in? I don't see it at all on BoxOffice.com's nor The-Numbers.com's weekend estimates. (BoxOfficeMojo.com isn't showing up for me right now. I know it was redirecting to IMDb earlier this weekend but was back up for a while last night. Now I'm not even getting the IMDb re-direct, just a blank screen.)
Kite got reviewed by some big city critics, so I know it didn't get just a contractural obligation single screen theatrical release in some small town way out in the desert in Arizona, but it doesn't seem to have been on too many other screens.
