I can't see anyone going out in public with a cell phone with a chicken leg for a case, it looks embarrassing, that poor model is most likely embarrassed to death by now.

Gawddammit Japan!!! WTF???? Okay will somebody at ANN PLEASE do a column trying to explain the whole Colonel Sanders persona in anime? What the hell is it all about? I've been puzzled about this crap for years ever since the first joke (I think) in A-ko. Though I have heard from a guy from J-list that Japanese seem to enjoy friend chicken during the xmas holidays. What the hell does it all mean???

KFC had aggressive marketing in the 70s that lied to Japan by saying eating fried chicken was the customary thing to do for Christmas in America. As Japan is no stranger to taking cultural ideas from others, they bought it wholesale and now you have to reserve KFC buckets weeks if not months in advance for the holidays. As for the Colonel imagery himself, it's probably just a matter of pop culture recognition, like the statues exist in real life and they're amusing, so they're also amusing when put into animation. |
