Same here. I'll definitely give it a shot.

I do hope there are returning characters, though.

I am a bit disappointed that this is the 20th anniversery project, instead of something like a fourth Ryo-Ohki OVA.

This simply is not Tenchi Muyo.

They gave the protagonist a rat tail to sucker money from Okayama to produce a "Tenchi anime" and called it a day. Who knows if this anime was on AIC's back burner before this deal under some other name.

And who cares? But Tenchi Muyo it is not.

Someone seems to have uploaded amateur webcomic art in place of the official character designs.

You know I originally had a problem with this but now that I think about it -
a. this is a chance to expand the harem, I mean Tenchi's harem looks pretty small compared to the youngs of the present like Rito and Issei
b. this will put Tenchi into a setting where he might actually get flustered and we get to see some real emotion out of him

So its not to bad. Although my question is this, is this supposed to be a pure spinoff like Tokyo with no connections, or is this supposed to ultimately tie in with one of the other series.

I like Yasuda's style, but one thing I've noticed is that some of his designs can look a bit same-y. In the manga I have to repedidly tell myself Akina isn't Mikado from Durarara and here beni really looks similar to Hime. And then there's touri who just-

Yeah...it's a good thing I like his style...

I'm baffled as to why AIC thinks anyone gives a rat's ass about a Tenchi Muyo reboot with nothing even vaguely resembling the original cast.

Warning: Rant.

I agree with the disappointment in this thread. I truly don't know what they were thinking. "Hey, let's pick a title of an old anime and stamp it on this new anime that has nothing to do and looks nothing like the original title."

Perhaps this anime will stand on its own merits as a good anime, but it is not a Tenchi Muyo anime, and I will not treat it as such. I don't care if they mixed some of the original Tenchi story line into this one, this is not a Tenchi Muyo anime. It's a sad attempt to make money off of Tenchi fans and new fans with this poor, generic art style.

If the creators truly cared about Tenchi fans, they would have given us SOME fan service. They could have at least reused all or some of the original characters as the main harem. I don't think the Tenchi series became so popular just because of the Tenchi character. It became popular because the other personalities and character designs were intriguing, attractive, and humorous.

I meeean, how can you not include Ryoko and Ryo-ohki? I don't have statistics, but I'm pretty sure she was a huge highlight of the show. She was certainly more entertaining and had more personality than Tenchi. Although, I think you could say that about all of the girls compared to Tenchi.

I've read a comment elsewhere that perhaps this is just a spin-off about Tenchi's son. If that is the case, I'm still not impressed. I don't want to see a remake of Tenchi's kid with new characters. I want to see a reboot of the original. That is what I imagined and expected I would get.

Well, at least Sailor Moon didn't turn out to be this bad. Thank goodness Naoko had authority on that shit. (Oh gosh, thinking about it now, if they did this to SM, I think I woulda fucked some shit up. LOL)

I am so bitter that I hope this anime flops.

I apologize if I offended anyone. I truly loved the Tenchi series, so it is close to my heart. Not only were my high expectations not met, but not even my lowest expectations were met. So, I am genuinely saddened. I was hyped for literally nothing.

to all the people criticizing the art, i want to see you all draw this well, even though this is only concept art, and not final art. And the art is hardly generic, just because Yasuda is popular doesn't make it so, the only person with similar art imo is Range Murata, who is Yasuda's inspiration .
(lol, looking back at the original art, and that WAS, however, generic as heck)

I do however, agree with the story aspect of things...
(will still watch it, when there's enough for a few episodes, so i might be waiting awhile)

Unlike nearly everyone else it seems, I'll be reserving judgement until I actually watch a good chunk of the series. They're trying something different, again. Maybe it won't turn out so good, maybe it'll be great, or maybe it'll fall squarely in the middle, becoming an entertaining, but underappreciated gem, like I consider Tokyo. I don't know yet, but I'm going to find out before I start forming opinions about a show that hasn't started airing yet.

At the very least, the premise confirms that Washu will appear. I'd say that's a pretty good indication that the rest of the classic cast will show up in some capacity.

Honestly, throwing out names does nothing for me. I have no idea who this artist is, therefore, I am not judging him on popularity. I am judging him on what he presented to us.

I'm not a professional artist, but I most certainly can draw better than this. I am probably so critical of art because of my art talent. Regardless, one does not need to draw well to like or dislike art. I do not need to draw well to know when I see good and bad art. That is just a fact.

Do you need to sing well to know when someone can sing well? Nope.

The art is bad and it is generic. Much of the anime we see today has either the same or very similar art style. It's very rare to find an anime that is unique and that has as much detail as old anime.

Sorry, but anime has deteriorated in the last several years. Most people who like today's anime styles are probably a new generation of youngsters who don't know any better to demand good art quality because all they've been exposed to is Naruto, Bleach, and this new shit.

Here is the fun fact: Original Tenchi Muyo locale is actually based from Okayama prefecture just as the new one. So it's no wonder the town wants to cash in from Otaku Pilgrimage/Tourism.

Even in 90's, I wasn't into Tenchi Muyo unlike most anime fans. Actually I still think that franchise is dumb and I wanted the whole franchise to die out.

Yet, it lives on through Otaku Pilgrimage/Tourism. sighs

And again, this is concept art, if you actually look at his final art you will see how good it can be, may not be to your liking, but it is not bad.
And about your thing with animation quality dropping, you'd be very wrong about that, 80's and 90's anime might've had a few good series, but so many series were plagued with bad animation, morphing faces, bad continuity, extremely off model shots, etc. It really has only improved over time...
And truly, go look at the old TM art, that was very generic for the time...

(and if the artist was bad, he wouldn't still be getting work)
(you also sound kind of full of yourself, but that's another matter)
