NEWS: Doraemon 3D CG Film Tops Box Office With 988 Million Yen

According to a web survey, 88.4% of the respondent cried during the film.

They DEFINITELY need to bring this movie stateside. A company like GKIDS would score with something like this. John Lasseter of Pixar would too, since he brought a lot of Ghibli films here to the States.

That was more a case of Lasseter and Miyazaki's mutual-admiration club (and the dream of being the one fan to personally avenge Disney's "No more Ghibli!" after Princess Mononoke), but yeah, if Lasseter was into Doraemon--before or after Disney X-D--this would be right up his street.

The JP audiences bursting into tears is more likely due to the sentimental "Series finale" tone for Nobita and Dora, which makes this the official JP childhood's-end equivalent of when Andy finally gave Woody away to Bonnie. :cry:
If it wasn't starting at the end, it would be perfect for Disney to latch on to tying in with the cable series while the getting was good, but they're practically ignoring the series as it is.

(Although, it was lines around the block for Spirited Away that got Disney interested in Ghibli again, so never underestimate the "Maybe it'll work for us, too?" power of a little runaway foreign box office...)

There might be hope. If the Doraemon products Viz puts out sell well, then it might convince Disney to air more Doraemon, but this time on the regular Disney Channel instead of Disney . That's just wishful thinking though, seeing how Disney only used it as a summer filler series. Don't expect Disney to get the rights to the film though. Even though I wish Disney would buy the distribution rights, I think GKIDS might end up getting the rights to it and it might be screened at a few arthouses in New York and Los Angeles.
