Don't see the big deal. Japan has these all the time. Bout time America tried their hand at it.

I thought he had a point: who wants to live on a planet where all your favorite series are getting legit releases, but in the worst way possible and therefore crowding out any possibility of them ever being done right?

Apollo-kun connected the convention with licensing. Things snowballed from there.

Judge hobbies, no, course not, judge a genre of Japanese comics that glorify/romanticize misogyny, objectification, molestation & rape!? Yeah.... Pretty sure there's fair reason to not be to keen on such things.
But hey, that's just my 2-cents. To each their own.

Yeah, how dare people draw sex and enjoy doing things that aren't illegal or really even immoral. You're also ignoring that women draw the same things aimed at women, I guess they've just "internalized" it and have no free will of their own.

What are you talking about?
If it is hentai in general then why are you participating in a thread that is obviously about something that you do not like?

Because just like some news is so exciting, some news is so depressing you Just have to respond to it.
But your right, I have no personal investment/interest in the topic & I've already spoken my piece so best to just leave it at that.
I won't bother you further, so you may continue your disscussion of pornographic manga without anymore interruptions.
In fact you need not worry about me posting on ANN anymore either, I know very well one of the biggest mistakes I ever made in my life was actually getting involved with the anime fanbase online, but I will rectify that error easily enough, just a simple matter of removing ANN etc from my bookmarks. I used to love anime & manga, but now most of it just makes me die a little inside.
So yes, no need of worry, I shan't derail your thread any further.

Anytime I always see people try to say women have no interest in or enjoy sexual communities or activities I just have to shake my head. It's like we've regressed back to the 1950s. Ryoumoto Hatsumi, Noizi Ito, Hiro Suzuhara, Uran, Yonekura Kengo, Cuvie, Ootsuka Reika, Kaarage, Digital Lover, Yuzuki N Dash, Tenkla, Abgrund... just to name a few of the literally hundreds of female hentai artists out there on the market. All you have to do is look at how many women participate at Comiket every year and realize there's a pretty even split between the markets. I would have hoped that the anime community, of all communities in the world, would realize how outdated such a mentality is on the views of human sexuality. Manga and anime are one of the most open and expressive mediums for sexuality that exist, both within the material and in the community.

And because you're looking at many ero doujinshi for straight, yaoi, and all tastes in between being done by people on their own time and by their own dime, it's not like its out of desperation, it's very much a hobbyist activity. For eromanga, there's more business activity involved and a paycheck, but artists will do what they like.

No kidding. Both Poro and Lilith/Pixy getting their nots tied in a noose and start going ballistic to fansubs groups like fakku and others when they release sub versions online, but doesnt even want to release any official version here. it makes me wonder what is taking them so long cause US companies like Kitty Media and Critical Mass Videos would definitely license their titles if given a chance unless both poro and lilith/pixy are asking for outrageous license fees and such. |
My guess is that the licensing costs are simply too high for Media Blasters (which is still on life support) to deal with. I suspect that until their finances improve, they are probably going to keep picking up the lower cost MS Pictures stuff. As for Right Stuf (Critical Mass) is concerned, they seem to be just interested in doing cheaper re-releases at the moment, which really sucks.
Ultimately, I feel that Media Blasters would be better off making the ero stuff their focus when it comes to licensing, as opposed to trying to keep up with Funimation and Sentai in the non-porn department. They've already burned bridges with fans who are exclusively interested in the latter anyway.

Isn't there a problem with licensing new hentai anime in the U.S. because the Japanese companies absolutely don't want any reverse importation going on? AFAIK that's why "new" releases tend to be lower-priced re-releases.

Those re-releases are probably all they can do now. I would absolutely believe fears of reverse importation are the cause here when the American version is the "true one" in the sense that it's uncensored, the lower price only happens to be a bonus factor. Even if the American releases were more expensive than the Japanese, it's still the better and more desirable product. It's hard enough to sell a single hentai episode here for $19.95, I can't imagine them ever trying to push something like what the Japanese discs go for, around anywhere from $38 to $68, depending on the company.
It would be nice if some company rep actually came out and confirmed that, all we have to go on is speculation with some common sense thinking about how the Japanese companies tend to operate. The proof to me lies in the timeline, hentai licensing was already on the decline before the global recession, so I can't really call that an excuse.

I hope it goes well, I'd like a hentai convention where I live as well, but I doubt I'll see one during my lifespan.

There is some truth to that. For example, It is commonly believed among fans in the US that Pink Pinapple (one of the "big players" in eroanime) is no longer interested in licensing out content due to Japanese fans getting their hands on the US (uncensored) versions of past releases. However, like I said, Media Blasters has plans (like all MB things, not set in stone until the pre-orders start to ship) to bring over MS Pictures releases, so the reverse importation issue doesn't seem to apply to every company.
