From the article:
Quote:
It comes via streaming services. You can watch Valvrave on Crunchyroll, Oreimo on Hulu (that's how I did it, an experience that was colored by four consecutive Third Shift Beer ads at every commercial break), and Madoka Magica on Netflix.

I hope this was meant only as an illustration of the various outlets Aniplex makes their titles available through (although you missed Daisuki), as you could have viewed Oreimo commercial free on Crunchyroll.

The only other reason I could think of for doing so would be due to a need to view it on a device that was supported by Hulu Plus at the time but not by Crunchyroll.

Should I be happy I got a complete set of Bandai Entertainment's release of Gurren Lagann before they closed up shop?

I'm still pretty surprised no one's picked up HxH for a dubbed home-video release. I'd have hoped it would be on Adult Swim eventually too.

Maybe I don't think I'm really that bothered by Aniplex's current business model with their more recent shows, when most of their shows I can just stream anyway on CR. But right now, I just honestly wish something could be done with R.O.D. Sure, you can stream it on Hulu or CR, but you can't do that if you live in Latin America apparently. Aniplex pricing is one thing (usually shows this old come in much, much cheaper offers from what I've seen *points at Funi's S.A.V.E editions*), but availability is even more frustrating especially when most of the offers for the Blu-ray are almost triple the retail price now. It's times like these I wish Funimation and a few more Aniplex shows would make a package deal with CR for audiences living in the Caribbean, Latin, and South America pretty soon.

It seems like someone has it, considering the HxH film is screening in San Francisco.

Aniplex is model is very similar to other high-end premium products out there. Just like those $1000 bags and shores, 200k cars, It's not something that you need. You don't need to buy those $1000 bags, you get always get a $20 one. You don't need buy any Aniplex bluray/dvd because it's available for you to watch almost every where.

But they need to have something that people want and make sure they are limited release, so the value don't go down. You can actually make money on many of Aniplex releases.

What have I been up to, other than being American and therefore not caring about soccer/football? I've actually been watching more 80s shows if anything. Nozomi released Cobra, Dirty Pair, and Rose of Versailles, Discotek released Captain Harlock, Fist of the North Star, and tons of classic movies. Between those two publishers, I mostly seem to be set with what anime I plan to buy.
So I've spent most of my time being mostly unimpressed with newer series (except for a few here and there, like Kill la Kill and more Mushishi), but I am still really happy that Toonami is back and anime is getting more attention and lots of new fans (that I hope will discover old series, I just love them!)
And for manga, my collection has exploded. Again. Dammit. But there's been a lot of Tezuka Kickstarters and such and I've gotten some great classic old series on my shelf too (like Basara). I've also begun to recently discover K-dramas, so there's that too.

I do have fond memories of the last World Cup, camping in Durness, NW Scotland, having several beers and watching Brazil v North Korea. Still remember when N Korea pulled a goal back and it got the biggest cheer of the night.

I found a lot more time to watch anime back then before I got into my current job, I believe I was reaching the end of a series of shows I really wanted to watch, which ended with Monster (brilliant but way too long). Since then I have been checking out a few new releases mixed with some older ones, most just do not seem to entertain my interest as much as they used to. Sign of getting old I guess.

Another change for me was my sudden foray into having disposable income which meant going from maybe a few shows I got for Christmas to having maybe fifty series now with some manga thrown in and monthly trips to the comic book store.

I did fall out of contact with everyone who I used to talk about this stuff with though which is a shame. Trying to recommend anime to some at work now is like trying to recommend an STD.

Hopefully I will be working in North America before the next World Cup.

What've you been up to between the World Cups, readers? Are you watching more anime than in 2010, or less?

To me, the biggest change in the last four years has been the dominance of streaming. In 2010, I was happy to learn about new stuff through reviews, maybe catch some episodes on Anime Network VOD, but more or less just wait to buy stuff on DVD that I knew I'd like, or that Right Stuf had made cheap enough for me to take a chance on. I originally expected Crunchyroll would be only for marginal and niche titles that would never get a disc release, typified by the fact that the first series I streamed was Wandering Son.

Skip to 2014 and my overwhelming form of anime consumption is streaming, I'm watching a lot more of it overall, and I'm keeping up with 3-4 simulcasts per season (plus a few back-catalog shows), something I would not have imagined doing a few years back.

I'm guessing not too many companies are as willing to jump on a constantly running kids show as they were when Bleach and Naruto were licensed. It might have a better chance if Bleach, Naruto, and One Piece weren't all being released on DVD at the same time.

Not sure why people try to justify HxH getting the shaft by saying it would have to compete with the already established "Big 3" when stuff like Fairy Tail, Toriko and even Phi Brain or Magi have no trouble getting pushed out with dubs.

Phi Brain focuses on "puzzles," Toriko has quirky food adventures, and so far, Magi has aired in 26 episode chunks.

While I've heard good things about HxH, maybe it doesn't seem to be far enough outside the typical shounen to compete against those other shows that have already been running for years and have established fanbases. Or maybe Viz just hasn't made up their minds.

Yeah, yeah, but not everyone has embraced the streaming world. You still need a fantastic internet connection to stream without buffering interruptions. If you are a business traveler, streaming from your hotel is a crap shot, maybe it will be okay, maybe it will be horrible.

The main difference between your luxury goods and anime, is that no one wants to watch a streaming video of a car or a purse, they want to have it in hand or behind the wheel. It gets tiring hearing people tell you, you don't have to own it. But they never tell you what happens when it stops streaming, when it is no longer available to watch. Then you are out of luck, and you should have bought it when it was available.

Interestingly enough, since the last World Cup, the talk was how fansubs were going to die, because of how much stuff was being released in the West. That wasn't going to happen anyway due to the vast under served foreign market, but actions like Aniplex's will only serve to move things backwards.

If Aniplex wants to treat its product as a high end luxury item, they have every right to do so, but no one has to like it either.

Outside of Aniplex's actions, I have had to curtail my anime buying. I could buy things site unseen, just because I liked the artwork on the cover or the blurb on the back side. Not anymore. You just have to be more selective nowadays, and really like to show.

I'm watching about the same amount of anime I've been watching for years. Manga reading has slowed down quite a bit though.
