Good to see at least one more psp game will get released, have to wonder if this will be a digital only release though.

It will be digital-only.
XSEED also has Trails in the Sky: Second Chapter for PSP. Natsume's releasing End of Serenity on the platform too. Gaijinworks supposedly has more things, but Victor Ireland gonna Victor Ireland.

It is a psp game after all and will work on all psp models along with the vita. I know it's bummer but this is still great news IMO

The problem is its also going to sell for about 30 dollars, and after you finish it, its worthless because as digital only you can't resell it. And as a consequence of not being able to resell it, there is little need for Xseed to eventually drop the price either.
Oh well that is one less thing to spend money I guess.

"Worthless" huh? I guess the enjoyment you get from games isn't worth much to you..

Anyways, for those that are a bit tight with the purse strings most companies that are in the business of publishing JRPG's including XSeed have been great at putting their catalog on sale early and often. Conception 2 was release like two weeks ago and PSN already had flash sale knocking off $10.

I tend to not re-sell jrpgs and well primarily I....... you know.....like playing them. So while digital only may not be ideal, it's better than nothing.
Also many niche games have gone on sale on PSN.

Don't get me wrong I don't resell my jrpgs either. That said I want something physical to own.
And yes 90 percent of the time a game never lives up to expectations let alone its cost, so barring Brandish being the next FF7, time spent playing it will probably be close to worthless.
See that is one of the nice things about being able to resell physical games, I can buy more to try out and if I don't like it I can resell it. If you don't like a digital game too bad. So it actually hurts sales in the long run as well, as people are less likely to take a chance on games, and this especially true of JRPG market which is niche to begin with.

It shouldn't be shocking that it's a digital release. The Vita has been out for over two years and retailers barely carry any PSP games anymore, and since Vita can only play digital PSP games it's understandable why Xseed went this route. You can argue less people will buy it perhaps, but on that same note it will cost less for the company to release it since they don't have to manufacture discs and cases so it will probably balance out. Considering we're so far into the Vita timeline already, I figure we're lucky they would localize a PSP game at all at this point.

I am not really shocked about this one, the game that I am most shocked about going digital only was SAO. Regardless of it being on the psp, that is a pretty big franchise, and to a lesser extent phoenix wright dual destiny going digital only was also a surprise.
I mean look, I am glad for those that wanted to play it, that they get a chance. I am not trying to take anything away from them. I am just saying if I am looking at the situation I think to myself
- Brandish an obscure rpgish action adventure game
- last seen in the US on the snes
- likely target market jrpg collectors
- profile of a jrpg player, tend to be collectors, collectors who in turn like physical games, and are more likely to spend money (just look at the Japanese market)
- cost of printing a physical copy, what maybe a few bucks per copy, while in reality probably under a dollar, so the variable cost is relatively low
- I would assume the largest cost is the translation and editing which must be done regardless of whether the game is physical or not, this is a fixed cost
- vita market is still relatively small like I said earlier, it hasn't been a great seller, therefore most sales will still probably come from psp owners
- so what it ultimately comes down to sales lost due to lack of a physical release < money saved from physical printing plus sales from people who only own a vita (which once again, considering the type of game Brandish is, considering the psp has a lot of rpgs, considering this type of individual is not likely to sell systems or games, a lot of the base for a game of this type will probably still have a psp - so I can't see this being a high number)
But whatever, you would hope these companies have people advising them on these kind of market conditions, the cost, etc.
