It seems like there isn't very much discussion going on lately. Debate in the Answerman, a few eternal threads like the Haruhi one, but there doesn't seem to be a lot of talk about new or old shows. Maybe I'm blind, but there doesn't seem to be as much activity now as there has been in the past.
So I thought I'd ask, does anyone feel afraid or self-conscious about starting a new thread? Do you want to start a new thread but you just can't figure out how to write the opening post? Do you think that ANN is quiet lately?
As for myself, I'm not afraid to start a topic but I certainly don't like doing it. Only reason I'm starting this one is I really do think ANN's too quiet in the normal anime threads. Most of the new posts seem to be either from people who didn't read teh rules (i.e. they're asking for recomendations, fansubs, or IDs) or people who might just be spambots (hey I'm so and so. Neato site!)

I'm always weary of starting threads. I never know if the topic will be interesting to others, if it's been done before a long time ago, or just generally what to even post about. I like starting threads that aren't a topic that's been beaten to death, so I rack my brain trying to figure out a new interesting topic. Then I have the personal issue of wondering who's going to misunderstand me this time.
edit--I removed a comment before anyone got their panties in a bunch over it.

I don't start threads simply because I'm just too shy and feel whatever I want to talk about probably has been discussed before. I'm not very good at expressing myself, and I don't think I could come up with anything to discuss. I also feel that my writing skills aren't very good, and if I did come up with anything to talk about it probably wouldn't be interesting.
I do think that this place is a little more quiet than it was last year, at least in the General Anime Discussion area. The Talkback forums aren't so quiet though.

When I first came onto the forums there was definetly a lot more activity than there is now. I think the thing is that people who were around last year have stopped coming, and there's only a handful of us regulars that hang around to actually bring up conversation. We get some new people here and there, some devoted enough to bring out interesting conversation as well as common sense in certain areas, others that may come on here only for finding an anime title and that's it.
I don't make threads that much anymore because there's not much to really talk about, and more of it's already been discussed. When you finish a series of course you're going to want to get people's opinions, or if there's something going on around you you want to know if it's happening to other people. I think the last thread I made was a couple weeks ago, but before that I don't even remember. Sitting and waiting around for a thread has it's advantages also. Plus, I don't know how often this happens to everybody, but when your thread gets locked, that also puts pressure on you to see if you can create one without getting it locked.
Certain threads within the anime forum I don't post in because I haven't watched that series. I make a lot more threads in the manga forum because manga is more of my specialty.

I'm much more into manga then anime so thats why I start no threads here. I started a few threads in the manga section, but being a relative newcomer I feel if I post too many I'll be labelled as a pointless spammer
Also unlike other possible people using the internet, I maintain my actual (shy) personality online, and often like to get greatly involved in the community and at least be slightly known before opening up new threads/

Depends on what you're posting. If you're just yelling "HEY GUYS CAN YOU HELP ME OUT!!" type of stuff in every other thread, then yeah, you're going to be labled that. But if you're just posting about series with somewhat moderate conversation, you'll be alright. I've started a lot of my threads in the manga forum.

I think that's what it comes down to for me, basically in my two and half years of hanging around I've seen just about every kind of thread imaginable. And basically I don't have anything to add to the tired Dub vs Sub, Fansub, Fillers, or why there isn't a second season Beserk.
As for myself I personally don't have a problem starting threads about anime I recently watched, heck when I started watching Trigun for the first time all the way through I started a thread on it and that was as recently as last summer.
Considering that when the new season starts I generally try to watch a fair amount of shows and give a little mini review I don't I think have a problem starting threads. I think that more then anything when I am (starting a new thread)I try to put some effort into what I am writing about so that people see that I put some effort into my post and that hopefully people will respond. If that is negative or positive so be it, as long as I felt like I put a quality post out that's what matters to me.

Really? I don't think that too many people have come and gone in the last year I actually think that I am getting to know more people on these boards, and basically I think that 99% of the people have good intentions of wanting to have a good time talking about anime....although there are some bad apples.

I simply haven't been able to watch much anime, so I haven't had anything to talk about. The nonsense from the Answerman column makes me not want to post. I started to write a long diatribe about it, but I decided that by contributing, regardless of the intent or content, I would have been contributing to the stupidity.
It seems many people now just want to use the What Are You Watching thread to carry out discussions rather than create a specific thread for each title. Look at all the talk of Princess Tutu going on, but no one has created a separate thread for it.
The literary allusions thread is interesting though. It's too bad I can't read anything for fun since I started school again (gotta conserve my eyes). I would be happy to contribute to that thread if I could think of anything. Surely there must be some allusions to Fitzgerald or Hemingway that I could comment on. Think brain; think!

More like people from 2004 and 2005 that stopped coming. It seemed to me when I first came onto the forums last year that there was a bit of activity, and a lot of people on the forums. Always new threads coming up and such. There's been some new people to come on here within the past five months also that have brought in some more life to the forums, but a majority of the older users just don't come on anymore.

It's not so much fear as it is not really having anything to say. I haven't really finished a series in a long time...as in the last anime I finished watching that was more than 1 disc was the Vampire Princess Miyu TV series, which I finished around when it first came out. There was a point in time that I bought them as they came out, and I watched them pretty quick after buying.
So I really don't have a specific title to talk about, and I haven't watched enough stuff to make general topics.
EDIT: I am a moron. I have obviously finished something since Miyu; I've seen Haibane Renmei! And I loved it so much, it being one of my absolute favorite anime ever. How did I forget about it? T___T.

Well, there are times when it seems that all you get at ANN is an Internal Server Error notice. Though this factor alone can't necessarily explain the lack of members posting in ANN forums, either that, or they chose to be what they call "lurkers".

That is obnoxious. I'm still getting that message every so often. I thought the server maintenance was going to fix that. (Danged gremlins just won't leave us alone! )
It does seem like lot of users pop in, post a few, then vanish or just stay for a year or so. You've had the same feeling I have fighterholic. I remember some of the users that are gone now and it kind of makes me sad to think some of the great people I talk with now are probably going to vanish too in a year or so.
As for myself, ya'll are going to have to learn to live with me. My brain might as well be uploaded into the servers, because I intend to stick around for the duration of the site's existence.

Its seems people go to the next big thing after posting on ANN for a while. Also, other things factor into the equation that do not allow them to surf as long as they want to. Like getting married or having a job that do not give you enough free time. Or simply finding a better anime forum to surf.

The only way I'm leaving ANN is the day when I get banned, not that I want to, but who knows.

I guess I am in the category of being afraid to start a thread. I mostly post in the manga forums, and as a relative newcomer I am sometimes shy about posting somewhere that has a lot of people participating in the discussions with each other. It seems to me that many of the users here have established and friendly relationships with each other, so I am sometimes wary or shy about joining conversations. Hehe, I know it's silly, but it took two years after I started coming to the site to actually register and begin posting!
