I'm always fascinated on the image a company choses to represent their studio. I often find that I miss an old logo when a new one is introduced, yet laugh at the ones that are horribly dated. Here are a few thoughts and questions.
Honneamise: My roommate pointed out he has seen this pattern elsewhere and it does seem familiar. The magatama design can be seen in Blue Seed, Otogi Zoshi, and a few other series. Doesn't Mai from My-hime form the three Magatama symbol around her wrists and ankles? It's a neat logo, and I like the use of color in it. Bandai Entertainment. I miss the old Easter Island logo that Bandai Emotion used throughout the 80s. The "Zaku monoeye" studio slate was fun but didn't last too long since now they have that "Nebula" logo. The Anime Works: logo was recently changed if memory serves. That one that lasted all those years looked like a fan piece. That Media Blasters logo is also really outdated. That weird analog synth sound in the background doesn't help. It's funny to compare their logo to ADV's ultra slick CG logo. Why does US Manga Corps use MD Geist as their logo? This is ranked as one of the worst anime titles of all time here! Granted they have recently lost their rights to Patlabor and Area 88, but there has to be a better logo out there than one of the worst anime ever. I love Manga Entertainments DVD authoring, yet their logo is as blurry as a VHS tape. This has become increasingly apparent since their new titles look so clear. How much would it cost them to remaster or create a new HD mastered logo? Funimation has a neat logo that seems to reflect the US with the Red, White and Blue along with the star, yet has the red circle in it. It's simple elegant and works for me. If only more companies would follow suit. |

Maybe it's me but I think of Texas when I see that logo. I don't know why. Could that be a representation of Texas' state flag? I think we need Tony K. or someone else from the Glorious Republic of Texas to answer that question. We're designing a new logo at Ocean. Since we will be a main sponsor of Anime Evolution, a fresh logo was decided to be needed.
Time for some re-branding! Not that we really use our current one anyways. But with a new logo, you should start to see it around more. Corey Fischer Ocean Productions |

All the companies, save for Funimation and Manga could use a new logo. Maybe I'm just nitpicking here but the others seem to have too much of a bland corporate look to them which just doesn't mesh well with the animated entertainment business they're a part of. Look at Disney for instance, there's no denying they're a large corporate entity yet they still use the classic and fun looking Disney castle logo.

I know what you mean, but Disney's in a different business: content creation, not just distribution. The licensors by comparison need to be pretty lean, highly corporate entities by comparison. I for one am far more interested in the personality of a studio that created a series than that of the importer .... |

That's definitely true, however it is the licensors logo the consumer see's on the package and when it comes to drawing people in packaging can be everything. Of course, who knows, I'm the type of person that doesn't even believe in the suit and tie look and see's no reason people shouldn't work in their offices in jeans and a t-shirt so my views on what is acceptable in the corporate world really aren't realistic.

If I'm not mistaken MD Geist was one of the first anime titles that US Manga Corps released. Okay... I checked the encyclopedia. From the comments there I'd assume it was the first one. I've never watched the show so I've no idea what it was about it that made them get attached to the character. One can only assume they've kept it as a tip of the hat to their "roots". |

I'm not sure if it is a good idea to have your studio associated to one title, even if it a popular one. I can imagine ADV having the Eva's silhouette as their logo, much like I can see the Gundam's profile being used for Bandai. I can't really think of any other icons that would work for a studio.
I noticed that TRSI has just changed their logo as of yesterday. It's still straight forward and good in my book. As for Japanese based companies I've always loved the complex and elegant Kadokawa logo. My favorite animation studio logo is that Gonzo one and am glad when it is kept in the translated credits instead of converted to standard font. There are so many animation production studios that have cool logos, but my main point in the first post is that the U.S. distributors tend to have really lame logos. I really believe that my roommate could draw a much better one than the old Anime Works girl. |
