1995 DVDs were introduced.
2006 Blurays were introduced. By 2002-2003 people had largely stopped purchasing VHS. Why are people still supporting DVDs? Their quality is horrid, the space they hold is horrid, and we're already almost at the next standard. I wish companies would just stop supporting these minority. Bluray players cost as low as 30 dollars now, there's no reason not to have one. |

because some people doesn't care as much as others about the quality difference between BR and DVDs and if DVDs still exist it means there still a lot of people prefering them over BR and why would you wish something like that? just go buy the BR version, no need to be like that personally I prefer DVD over BR because I can watch it in my computer which is not the case with BR because it's not adapted for it |

DVD is more pervasive than Blu-ray. Macs can't play Blu-ray, for instance; most PCs still don't have BD-ROM drives. Blu-ray adoption rate has actually gone down a bit, IIRC, much to Sony's dismay. Best I can say is that at least Blu-ray is doing better than DVD-Audio and Super Audio CD ever did. I imagine the initial format war with HD-DVD didn't help much. Playing a well-mastered DVD on my Blu-ray player looks almost as good as native HD (my HDTV is only 40") whereas VHS is clearly inferior in quality to DVD. |

I have not bought a DVD in the last 5 years, and I will never buy a DVD again - BDs just are that much better, the difference between DVDs and BDs is so great, you can't even compare it. Even a well mastered DVD with the BD player upscaling it to HD, is still incredibly inferior to BDs in so many ways.
But I do see the issue, BD playback is only useful on standalone BD drives, sure you can buy a BD drive for your computer, but the only software available to play the BDs in their entirety are expensive, clunky, bloated useless and terrible. Until BD playback comes to proper media players, then I don't see it being adopted any faster. I've never bought anime on DVD, since BDs came out, not only being BDs are vastly superior in terms of supported Video and sound quality - but because of how they deal with subtitles. I cannot stand DVD subtitles, because of the limitations of DVDs, DVD subtitles end up looking pixelated and terrible to look at when displayed on any modern screen. But anyway, back on topic. I'm so excited for this release, managed to get a Early bird ultimate edition! Last edited by mehh on Sat May 03, 2014 2:30 am; edited 2 times in total |

Maybe I missed it, but I don't think I've seen anything on the US release for this since GKids said they were doing the theatrical thing. I know they don't need a kickstarter in the US, but I'm starting to get a little impatient over here.

Whilst BR players themselves may be cheap, the HDTV's you need to make the most of them definitely are not.

Not sure about Europe, but in N. America the DVD market is still a lot larger than the BD market.

Not surprised, Anime Limited have already garnered a very favourable reputation, and that's not limited to people in the UK. I got my early bird copy, and i'm really hoping to see some stretch goals today (updates are comming, they said!)
***If any NA/AU/any part of the world really wants to get in on the Kickstarter you can pledge for whatever tier you want, then have a UK anime retailer forward your kickstarter reward with another order (can be a cheap manga volume or whatever). I'm not in the eligable areas, but I will still be able to get my copy of the Ultimate Edition thanks to this method, and I know that there have been a few US citizens who wants to support this so I thought i'd leave this here. Just drop an email to a UK anime retailer and ask them if they could forward your Kickstarter reward with another order. You'll have to pay for shipping, but it's most definitely worth it to get your hands on this. |

Here in the UK, some titles are still released DVD only. Its only recently that MVM Entertainment has become more confident in releasing Blu-ray due to a reduction in costs. Also I believe DVD sales are always higher than Blu-ray sales for anime here too. |

In my case, DVD is still my standard. Blu-ray is just an occasional upgrade treat, but I don't care for it that much. |

The first two stretch goals have been posted https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/alltheanime/patema-inverted-ultimate-edition/posts I am finding these stretch goals on the expensive side for what they offer.
Stretch goal 1- Specially Commissioned Illustration at £25,000 that's £9,000 for a picture on an art box and stretch goal 2 - Patema Inverted Soundtrack at £40,000 that's £15,000 for a sound track. I know these things are costly to license but still £9,000 for a drawing and £15,000 for a few music tracks? |

I'm only speculating here, but i'm guessing that unless you have tie-ins with the Japanese you'll have to pay up, or settle with whatever the Japanese licensors/right holders will offer you. The illustration would be a brand new one, tailor made (and exclusive!) for this kickstarter. They're paying for Ryusuke Chayama's time, and since he's the character designer for Patema Inverted, it wouldn't surprise me if there's a premium to that price as well. Then they're paying for the rights to use it and the costs for printing it. And those are just the costs I can think of right now, some of them are may not be relevant, and there may be many more. Same goes for the OST, there's a lot of fees to be paid, then there's the expansion of the art box (as they've confirmed that the box would hold the CD case if the goal is met), licensing of artwork for the CD case, more disc replication, CD case replication etc. At first glance it may seem like a lot of money, but yeah... |

You are right there are a lot of back hind expenses that may be included that we don't know about. |

I wish a NA company would do this.

You can get 40 inch 1080p sets for only a few hundred, depending on the model, brand, and sales. At that size, it's decent enough for most living rooms and definitely large enough for a bedroom. And besides, it's a TV, one of the more often used appliances in your home, it's worth spending the money for a good one that fits your needs. A BD player will only play your BDs, a TV can also be your computer monitor. |
