I loooooved this series. I remember pre-ordering all of the volumes and waiting, waiting, for the next one to be released. It really is a gem. Thanks for pushing it into the limelight.

A great series to highlight. I never understood Tokyopop's title change, but love the series. Sumiere is an awesome character and I love how complex the relationships get without going overly melodramatic. Despite some occasionally zaniness, all of the people involved felt very real, struggling in their own ways to find happiness while sometimes messing up along the way.

I'm a man and I loved it too!
Because Sumire is so pretty, cool and competent, and yet comes across as a real human, and The Dog is so NOT the standard shoujo hero! True, he's very handsome, but he's not treetop tall or skinny as a rail. Those characteristics of main guys in shoujo manga are as invariable as the enormous boobage of main girls in shounen manga, and they repel imaginative participation by most men in shoujo stories--because, let's face it, few of us are built like anorexic basketball players. The Dog character is just flawed and non-standard enough for a normal male reader to imagine himself into the roll. And, as I recall, I being in that story was a delightful experience! |

I just recently read this and thought it was one of the finest manga I have read. The characters are realistic, except when they are absurdly funny, and the story is alternately heartwarming and heartrending. It also made me want to read Cat's Eye, which is by the same author and is mentioned in passing at one point. That is also a fun series that I am enjoying tremendously!
Oh yeah, and I am also a man, though my kids often tell me that my taste in anime and manga is more like that of a woman. LOL |

LOL. I'm the opposite. A mom who loves seinen. It would be fun to read article/interview/piece about parents who are anime/manga fans and how they share (or don't share) their hobby with their children. Do you hide your copies of Berserk and Blade of the Immortal? Do you "retire" the figures with detailed panties beneath the skirts? What about anime like Hellsing and Nana? |

I love this series! The social commentary in it is so interesting and the characters are so likeable. I wish we would get more josei manga over here. I am also 5'10" and feel like a giant when girls are considered tall at 5'6" in manga series.
Regarding the above post, I have gotten rid of some figures/anime/manga that I thought were too risque for my kids as they've gotten older, but only if I don't totally love it. I still have some swimsuit figures and more mature anime and manga that I cannot part with. NANA is an absolute favorite. I guess I just plan to try to be responsible about what my children see and explain it to them. I dunno...I'll probably just decide things as we go along. |

This is a series I always end up rereading at least once ever other year or so, and I try to (ever-so-gently) nudge at people who I know have similar taste to mine. Most recently last autumn I showed a relatively-new friend the 2003 J-drama Kimi wa Petto* (which, having been made before the series was completed, had one of those "and-the-story-goes-on" endings-- oh well, it's still very funny & romantic and worth watching) and was so glad I had the manga series to hand to her so she could finish the story (and the lucky girl didn't even have to wait months & months between volumes like I did). I'm not sure all of the volumes are in print any more though, so I do get a little nervous when I lend them out. But anyway, yeah, Tramps Like Us is the kind of josei I want to see more of over here.

Oh, yes the English title.
I didn't buy this till I read a preview in Tokyopop's takuhai, I think the little magazine was called. Their choice of title was such a turn off and then seemed ill fitting. Tramp? It's like some bad pun or something. I've never drew a connection about the music either. Boy, they must have wanted that title. I think I would have picked the manga up earlier if they just called it "You Are My Pet" as dirty as that sounds too. (But then, I read the racy/porn ladies' stuff too. I just try to not waste too much money and space on really frivolous/disturbing manga.) Guess I'm fortunate Tokyopop did a little promotion back in the day or I would have avoided this wonderful series. 
The article very much points out a lot of what is loveable about it. I want to find the box I've got my copies stored in now so I can read it again. |

I don't care what anyone says, Midnight Secretary is completely awesome. And I'm not just saying that because the naughty pictures are really sexy. Well, I am, but that's not the whole reason.

I was so glad TokyoPop actually finished printing this series. I got stranded with so many of their titles. Of all I wanted finished though, this was the one I wanted most. It was such a good story and a great romance. I wish we had more like it over here.
(I like Midnight Secretary too. There's chick lit, then there are erotic fantasies, and one isn't lesser than the other just by virtue of what it is.) |

Kimi wa Pet is fantastic in almost every regard and is proof that more josei needs to come over here.
But really. Shoujo manga in the 90s to today is not all like Black Bird, Mayu Shinjo and the utter waste-of-trees-garbage that was Hot Gimmick. I hate that a lot of people think it's all like that. There is so much amazingly written, fair and strong-willed shoujo out there from this era. Finding it might be a little harder but it's worth it. Some of it has even been translated offically! Basara, Kanata Kara, Kare First Love, Please Save My Earth, etc. Read them. |
