So a bad anime, but not bad enough that it becomes unintentionally hilarious? Ugh.

I couldn't decide if Joe is supposed to be as annoying as he is in the first part of the first episode, before he turns into a typical '80s action hero. I thought maybe he was supposed to come off as a too-comfortable overgrown brat to provide contrast when his life dives down the toilet....but maybe it's just the same bad writing that infests the production as a whole.

This made me laugh so hard... Oh man, those crazy 90s and their woefully corny male-empowerment plots.

Kadokawa didn't buy up Daiei until 2002. The studio actually made some pretty good films in the 1990s; Shusuke Kaneko's Gamera trilogy which is easily three of the best films of that genre, period, plus "Shall We Dance?" which was a fairly big hit and number of Takashi Miike films including the "Dead or Alive" series. They certainly weren't a dying studio during the 1990's.

One memorable low point: releasing a compilation tape of nothing but fight scenes from its various anime -- which is something no Japanese licensor would ever approve of even in the 90s.

"Mean & Mercenary" was an awesomely stupid video. Considering the way Manga Entertainment marketed their catalogue in the UK, I wasn't really surprised they released this.

If you can see it for free it's worth seeing for how NOT to make an anime it is truly one of the worst anime ever made nothing else featured on pile of shame comes close and I've seen them all.

Argh, I was mixing Daiei up with Nikkatsu (who absolutely WAS struggling in the 90s, and released little other than roman porno, pink eiga, and some really terrible hentai). Fixed the language of the article. Thanks for that.

I enjoy watching the worst of the worst, so I got a lot of laughs out of this one - well, out of the first episode, the second lacked the "WTF factor" that makes these things worth viewing.

On (rare) occasion I've seen posters on here claiming that anime doesn't get as bad as the worst live-action movies, pointing out that there is too much technical expertise involved in producing animation. They really should be made to sit down in front of Dark Warrior. On the weekend I watched Fred Olen Ray's first movie The Alien Dead, which cost $12k to make in 1980 and is considered by many to be the worst zombie flick of all time, and it was better than what I remember Dark Warrior to be.

I recall Mike Toole having talked about this one in his "Worst Anime of All Time" panel. Yeah, I'm glad I never saw this.

Yeah, Mike showed this at Otakon last year, and I remember it looking pretty bad. Still, part of me kind of wishes that it could one day get a DVD release, if only so that both dubs can be included alongside the original Japanese audio... But this is probably the part of me that somehow managed to get through all of Gundoh Musashi, so how bad could this be? I mean it's only two 50-minute episodes and not 26 half-hour episodes, right?

So it's pretty much an even lamer version of Biohunter I guess?

Seems like this was so boring that Justin had trouble even finding stuff to say. It's amazing that the most interesting thing about it...is the fact that no one's interested in it.

I actually just watched BioHunter the other week. Makes me wonder what happened to Urban Vision.

But in any case, BioHunter wasn't THAT bad. It was a decent OVA style anime. I'm just a sucker for the 90's art style, character design and animation. When Anime was considered edgy, cool, dark and risque, which is none of today.

This is a great review and reminds me of the older days of anime, where the guy's had 27 inch waists, 50 inch chest/back, 23 inch arms and great spiky hair.

I really would like to get a hold of the UK dub. I'm a sucker for bizarre Manga UK adaptations that never make it over here. Were there any quotable off-kilter lines from either dub?

Actually, after looking into this OVA's encyclopedia entry this line of Justin's is more fitting than he intended:
Quote:
The hackneyed story is pretty much straight out of an old pulp novel.

According to the encyclopedia, Dark Warrior was adapted from a novel written by Sho Takeshima (who apparently died in 1990 from a traffic accident). So for all we know, the original material could have very well been a Japanese pulp novel.

I, too, wonder what happened to Urban Vision. They had a lot of those dark, edgy, and cool anime.

That next-to-last picture in the article is beyond epic. That guy on the left, his proportions are so lopsided! Laughing
