A pretty nice initiative. I always thought that manga publishers need to be closer to their target audience, considering the community is rather small.

Kinda sad they aren't accepting suggestions from neither Shueisha nor Shogakukan. Nor Gentosha for that matter which stopped me from suggesting Music of Marie.

All the publishers they won't accept suggestions from are publishers they can't license from; so it would be a wasted suggestion. Shogakukan and Shueisha co-own Viz, so they only license to them. Akita and Gentosha won't work with them for unknown reasons.

As for me, I suggested a couple of Mitsukazu Mihara's recent series (would've suggested Embalmer if they were accepting rescues) as well as Drug and Drop. I know that last one is a long shot, but it fits the criteria.

I, too, have always lauded Vertical for their sincere attempts to stay connected to their readership. I own quite a number of their awesome series like Flowers of Evil, Limit, and a number of their Tezuka releases, so I'm always excited for another Vertical license survey. That being said, I was wondering about Hakusensha titles? Given the publisher's close relationship with Shueisha, is that a possibility?

Not entirely true. New Lone Wolf and Cub is from Shogakukan and Gantz is from Shueisha, and those went to Dark Horse. It's really just about how much time and money American publishers wanna go through to pry those titles away from Vizeisha. So, basically, it has to be a manga which a rival non-Viz company really feels is worth the trouble, if they're going to bother.

One of their titles, Sickness Unto Death, is from Hakusensha, so it is possible. Tokyopop used to get a lot of Hakusensha stuff too, back in the day.

@Gatsu - Yes, you're right. They were originally licensed a long time ago though; I think it's much rarer for other companies to try and do that now. More recently though, Gate 7 by CLAMP is also Shueisha and Dark Horse have that. Although I think that's because DH were able to get the rights directly from CLAMP because in my English copies of the books, it says it was licensed through an agency, rather than through Shueisha.

Which is really frustrating, because Shueisha has some really great titles, but all Viz seems to be interested in releasing is more generic shojo beat titles and whatever happens to be running in "Jump".

@st_owly: Thanks. "March Comes in like a Lion" is going to definitely be on my list!

It's nice that they keep doing this, but have any licenses actually come as a result? I partipated in them to vote for Princess Jellyfish but stopped when it seemed clear that even though it was, IIRC, the number one request, it didn't seem to have any chance of happening.

I just wish someone would pry Ai Yazawa's back catalogue away from Shueisha/Viz since they've shown no interest whatsoever in releasing it over here. Kagen no Tsuki especially would be wonderful for Vertical.

I always wished other publishers would do this. It's great having the option from Vertical; I think it strengthens ties with the fans.

Also, why the blocks on Akita and Gentosha? I thought TP had a contract going with the latter, but they don't really exist too much besides Hetalia releases. Yen has a handful of Akita licenses, too.

More like whatever happens to be running in Jump which won't last more than 2-3 books. Rolling Eyes They keep ignoring fan requests for manga like Sket Dance, Beelzebub, and Medaka Box.

marie: Yeah, I'm not fond of Vertical pulling that shit, either. The rest of Cromartie High was also a popular vote, and they still ignored it.

It does baffle me about that, considering her work does sell here. Well, at least in manga form, anyway.

Go Comi had quite a few licenses from Akita when they were going, as did Tokyopop a long time ago (<2004), but Ed has said as explicitly as he can without going into detail that Akita, for whatever reason, do not wish to work with Vertical. I have to say though, I didn't know that Gentosha was off limits to them. I don't remember that being the case in the past.

Yes actually!

Let's see...

Gundam the Origin
Knights of Sidonia
What Did You Eat Yesterday?
Paradise Kiss
Helter Skelter
Utsubora
Witchcraft Works
(Vanguard was also requested a bit but we made that decision based on our talks with BushiRoad)

Also just for the record... Top vote getters are not guaranteed to be picked up. (Actually on more than a few occasions our sister company would get first crack at the top titles.)

My votes went to:

Junketsu no Maria
Aoi Hana (Sweet Blue Flowers)
Hokago Play

Couldn't submit due to publisher:

Alive (Shueisha)
SWWEEET (Shogakukan, Inc.)
Binbou Shimai Monogatari (Shogakukan, Inc.)
Tokumu Hokokan Yumihari (Special Task Force, the Battle Ship Yumihari) (Gentosha Comics Inc.)
Under the Rose (Gentosha Comics Inc.)

I look forward to seeing some new announcements!

I threw a penny into the wishing well for more Asumiko and Anno! It's been a dream come true getting to have them on my shelf this year courtesy of Vertical. I know the titles can't be that successful because of their content n style but I'm soooo happy that Vertical decided to take a chance on them nonetheless!!
