An action game, great. Its like Square has forgotten what this franchise is about. I'm almost tempted to cancel my preorder now.

Um...you can run around a little on the battle field and block whenever you want, but other than that the battle system's pretty much a combo of XIII's ATB system and X-2's dressphere switching. We're not talking Devil May Cry levels of free movement here.

A demo just got released which gives a bit of a peak at the battle system..

Square forgot what the franchise was about years ago. I don't understand how anyone could even consider this as a worth while purchase given how stupidly bad 13 was. Well, beyond "look at the shiny graphics".

-XIII
-Stupidly bad

I could say the same thing about VII and get insulted and bashed for it because VII has a fanbase who takes even legitimate criticisms as a pot shot at the game.

XIII has as many issues as any other FF game. The only thing it has, unlike most FF games don't, is linearity. That doesn't make it 'terribly bad.' Average, yes but terribly bad is exaggerating a little too far.

It takes a special kind of cognitive dissonance to even say XIII is on the same level as VII. While I think VII is a tad overrated (whatever the fudge that means anymore), it's not a bad game by any stretch.

XIII is a bad game, it's got a bad story, annoying characters and boring combat. it's not even the linearity that's the main problem, plenty of other games in the series are linear. The linearity is just an easy target.

It's not the only bad game in the series, but it's definitely the most recent one.

Lots of the hate FFXIII gets is because its a game aimed at teens being played by adults who expect the franchise to age with them. If FFVII came out now, it would get similar hate due to having a teen oriented story as well.

I totally disagree. I expect lots of flack for this comment, but at the very least, FF7 let you play the game. You, the player, for the most part were in control, not a largely automated system. You had to make the choices in battles, where to go in the world, what to do, even the absurd mini games offered players an option of, you can do this if you want. FF13 has none of that. It was the very definition of a linear game.

Also age has nothing to do with it, as all of my favourite games I played when I was younger like Chrono Trigger and Secret of Mana were aimed at teens, yet those games, say what you will, still appeal to me now.

And yes, the story of FF7 was generic, bad guy wants to destroy the world, we get that. But at least it made sense. The good guys want to stop the bad guy, done. The story in 13 was just, bad, the characters were idiots and it was just, boring.

For a comparison, look at Pixar films, they are aimed at teens, but the writing is so good that they can be enjoyed by older people as well. "Teen oriented story" is just a poor excuse for bad writing. Given this is a board for people who watch anime, i think most of you can understand that.

Lightning Returns looks so good! Really, the battle system simply looks amazing. Well going off the demo it very much is. It's going to be very fun collecting the costumes and figuring out which ones work.

Game is going to make for the terrible XIII-2 for sure.

Nope. I finally played FFVII not so long ago and had a blast. Story was simple yet interesting and the gameplay had a lot of things to give. Exploring, defeating Weapons (unique monsters that presented real challenge, at least during first walkthrough), a ton of secrets and items to find, chocobo raising system, mini-games. It's just a very interesting game that is still fun to play.

And FFXIII? A lot of stupid "philososphical" monologues, decent characters and average story with unbearable gameplay. I mean, okay, linear section is fine because you at least get new cut-scenes and story as the reward but open-world section is just plain tedious. Side-missions are boring as hell and navigation overall feels tiresome, with empty world and uneven difficulty. And damn, this grass texture on the plains looks ugly. The only thing that is good in this game, beside some characters, is leveling up system. But boring combat and everything else just negate this plus.

Nah. I'll disagre. The combat in XIII is pretty damn good. It's only real flaw is that it pushes for and is only about the strategy of how can you kill these things the fastest. It's a really fun battle system with an aspect of tension because the flow of battle seems like it can always change.

The game also looks pretty damn good.

The story is muddled sure, but the plot had a good premise. Some good ideas here and there. Pulse does have good atmosphere considering human life is supposed to be dead there. Some of the characters are relatable and don't have super big issues which is a plus.

It's not a perfect game. I like it better than 7, because I'm not a big fan of 7. Talk about an easy game with a skill system that makes characters unimportant. It's nowhere close to the best FF, but I don't think it's bad.

This is one of the biggest problems with most 3D FF games. Whats the point of having a bunch of characters to choose from if they can all be the exact same? FF9 was the only one that didn't do that, and is also the best 3D FF... each character was unique and had their specific role they played. That makes it much more strategic to choose who to bring with you and you couldn't just make a group of characters who could do everything.

You either have low standards, or you haven't been gaming for very long if you geninely think that "battle" system is good. If all you have to do is mash a button to win with the AI doing most of the work, it's hardly combat at all.

I'll agree about FF9, that was just fun, even though it was easily the most "cartoonish" of all the pre PS2 FF games. Bliss.

What a great argument. Insult me and then not say anything.

I've been playing games for over 20 years. I probably play more games then you.

And since you have nothing else to say. I'll just ignore you.

It's kind of not a problem in X, since only later in the Sphere grid can you actually gain others abilities. Still, they don't become totally un-unique. And in the international version you have complete control to make character unique or not.

It's a problem in 12 because you gain LP points way too fast and can unlock everything important pretty fast. You'd have to not use anything to make characters unique and even then. The international version fixes this issue completly and makes 12 an even more amazing game.

XIII kind of artificially (or it feels like it more then X) stops this since other classes that aren't naturally the character's classes take forever to level so I guess it keeps characters unique. Plus certain characters have different abilities earlier so there's that.
