I'm ecstatic to see that Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha (the movie of it) made it on the upper half of the Top 50 (or Top 20) Blu-ray ranking, considering that the show's been out for a while now.

The first thing I thought was" the logic says that at least the first BD from Attack on titan will be on the list. And yes it was true.

3.33 aside, Attack on Titan was probably the biggest Anime of 2013. This list really sheds some light on how small the anime industry is in Japan. AoT Vol. 1 Blu Ray sales were about 52K, which means out of a population of about 120M, only 52K people bought a copy of this and that's about .0004% of the entire population.
Anime is popular, but maybe not as much as some people think I think it's incredible that it sold over 50,000 units, but in the overall picture, anime is still a niche' medium and needs to be supported. |

Well, it did sell some good number of DVDs as well, but the result isn't that much greater when you're looking at the overall population. They may watch the anime, but very few people ever collect it.

Yeah, which isn't a surprise given the price... only the most hardcore fans are going to be paying 400-600 dollars for a series. So while millions may watch it, only a fraction of that will actually buy it. |

v1 sold 80k copies, and anime is ridiculously expansive. SnK is not exactly a niche, its doing way to good for that. Plenty of anime are still really popular though, such as sazae-san, doraemon and shin-chan. And the old ghibli movies are still selling DVD's, decades after they came out. Its true that most anime are aimed at the niché audience, but most of them don't even reach 10k BD+DVD's sold(on average). I don't really consider any anime getting a 50k+ average, SnK has a 55k~ average, to be a niché. Chances are the merch and original source is also selling like hotcakes. |

Not a bad year for shows with a military theme. Gundam UC, Girls Und Panzer, Code Geass, Attack on Titan and arguably EVA too even though it's more like a PMC.

Japan tried lowering the prices of anime at one point and it didn't work out so they jacked the prices right back up. I don't understand why lower prices wouldn't lead to higher sales but it happened. I still can't find any info on this but would like to read about it. |

Sales have to not only increase, but increase enough to justify the lower cost. If you cut costs by 50%, your sales would need to more than double to justify the price cut. So if they only increase by, say, 20%, it would be a bad move. So they probably increased sales a bit, but not enough to make it worth it. |
