Guess the writing was on the wall?

Idols are not like wine: they do not get better with age.

When they are mass produced from a studio, there Idol careers pretty much are retired before age 19.
There are exceptions, but the trend is the young girls are very much replaceable for other new young girls, and AKB48 has been known to intentionally put up "cute, yet untalented" girls as front runners.

It's very telling on the standard of idol industry that so many of the "graduates" do not go on with what they started: a music career. Musicians may start out as groups, but go on solo careers once they find their own voice, because making music is their dream. What does that say about the "talent" agencies that the girls they hire do not dream of music?
