Just saying I'm glad Quebec gets its own rating as it's generally more open than US or even Canada, apart from some odd exceptions (usually older stuff that wasn't reviewed, like the original Freddy movie getting 18+ which is the same rating here as porn, or all versions of Kite getting 18+ too). But those are few and far between. It takes more than a few swear words or nipples to upgrade a rating. But of course all system have their oddities.
By comparison, I find the MPAA completely ludicrous. Movies aimed at teenagers (I'm talking about drama and pieces about real-life issues teens deal with) are rated R because of drugs or some sexuality, thus making sure the audience cannot see it. Or having studios butcher some movies because they fear the rating... |

Interesting news about CR. Just popped over to ANN to look something up after watching on CR and just now hearing about the ownership change.
Yeah, I'd think the goal is to get more people watching CR - user base is what its all about whether its twitter, facebook, netflix, or Crunchyroll. Don't think they'd do anything to lose folks. I'd guess the new ownership is probably looking to scale-up CR for more licensees, content (probably beyond anime titles), and users....hopefully... |

My concern about CR is that I've been part of software grabs from other companies before, and ended up being laid off both times, the original company closed down. Each time a big shiny company comes in with lots of money and plans for expansion, and they're going to let the original company continue on with their business same as before, just with more backing.
Then they slowly build up a huge team (overseas both times) that can do the same thing, but supposedly only for the overseas clients. They change the product, wanting to put their mark on it and in doing so remove what made it special. Then in another year or so they find the NA contingent costing too much and lay them off, keeping all rights to the software that the company had been eying in the first place, dropping the original company and service entirely. Will it happen here with CR? Of course I hope not. CR is the heart of my anime activity and hey, this might be a great opportunity for them. But my personal experience makes me worry, especially when it's clear that the Chernin Group was looking only for a streaming platform and couldn't care less about anime. CR guys, please keep enough in the bank to buy the anime/manga portion back if that ever happens! |

Sony's video division is weird. They licensed the video rights of a big chunk (all?) of their back catalog to Mill Creek. It's not just niche stuff either. Married... With Children, Bewitched, Charlie's Angels, The Cosby Show, or movies like I Know What You Did Last Summer aren't the kind of titles you would expect to be licensed to a third-party distributor. Even Sleepless in Seattle only got a Blu-ray print run of 3,000 copies from a third party distributor (a different one).
Still waiting on a release of the rest of Cyborg 009. Does anyone know if Sony still has that? |

Who says I'm not? I just don't have the time or energy to watch their entertainment when mine's already fully occupied by Hollywood film and anime. I don't even bother to watch j-dramas, I don't even watch American dramas either. I can enjoy their culture in other ways, you know. Drama and pop music are not the only avenues to learn about other places. |

Yeah I've noticed that several M-rated shows are still 14+ in Canada. Although you'll find the same discrepancies among different publishers in the US too.
Luckily anime and home video and internet releases don't have to go by the MPAA. That's why Amazon lists nearly all anime as "unrated" and most movies on home video that have extra footage must be actually be released as "unrated" as well. Anyone else that chooses to put a rating uses their own standards. Viz is the most conservative, followed closely by Funimation to Sentai being much less conservative and Aniplex, then Media Blasters being the least conservative. |

while I understand where you are coming from mdo7, walw6... is right that maybe you should tone it down. You've been preaching mimicking hallyu in most every thread, but being into anime doesn't automatically mean you love every entertainment property coming out of Asia, and you're starting to sound like a broken record. I've enjoyed a number of Korean and Chinese films, and I own a handful of K-Pop tracks, but ultimately I don't love it the way I do anime and J-Pop. It just doesn't resonate the same way with me. Quite frankly, I generally find K-Pop too American. It's fun, but its not emotionally engaging in the same way for me. There's nothing wrong with liking Korean pop culture, but this is first and foremost a Japanese anime website. You can't expect everyone here to be as enthused about K-Pop as you are, and they're going to get frustrated if you try to turn every thread into a K-Pop thread. |

OK, I see. But to be honest, dramas and pop music can definitely help a person learn and be fascinated, it worked for Korea. I'm sure you wouldn't have learned about Japanese culture if it hasn't been for anime. I want J-dramas because it can help anime fans learn more about Japan in a realistic way with a interesting perspective, yes you can learn about Japanese culture using anime and Japanese films, but there something about dramas that can help immerse a person into history and culture of that country. If it wasn't for Chinese-language dramas from Hong Kong, I might not have studied Chinese history. I have experience with dramas before I watched anime, so I know how dramas like K-dramas, Chinese dramas, and J-dramas can help a person get immersed into culture and history. I'm sure J-dramas both modern and historical can help me learn more about Japanese culture and history from interesting perspective. |

They even sub-licensed Bebop: The Movie to Image. The Blu-ray release is awful though. It has STEREO sound (for both audio tracks) and no extras, despite the DVD being packed. I REALLY hope FUNi rescues the movie soon. |

Interesting answers about Crunchyroll.
Still dream of a decent release for Blood+, especially since Blood C came out. Mdo7 if you want those answers from the AnswerMan, then you need to PM him directly. He already said, he doesn't select questions from the forums or Twitter. |

I'm thinking about that, but then again, other people may have thought of this when J-dramas was brought up, so who knows maybe other people are going to write the same question as I did. But I'll think about it. EDIT: Already send an email about J-dramas issue to Answerman. Hopefully I hope I can get the answer. |

Don't worry that's what I did, I emailed. I forgot to correct TarsTarkas on that. But thanks for doing it for me. |

Thanks for using my question I'm glad to find out who the Chernin Group is and how they fit into all of this. I was going to bring up DramaFever, after you mentioned Latin American Novella TV shows, but it's already come up. So that's been covered to a point. The one thing I do want to mention is I have to wonder if Chernin's next move is to acquire DramaFever? DramaFever has much of the content CrunchyRoll is missing for non-Anime/Live Action side of things. What it doesn't have is the technical side or the amount of presence on streaming devices and I don't think those issues have come up in the thread yet. I found DramaFever originally on Roku and other than Roku and DF's website, I've not seen it break into much else. I do believe is is available on a few other systems but not on PS3. Even on Roku DramaFever's app isn't the best. It looks a bit like CR's but it never feels like it's as stable to use as CR and the streaming quality just isn't there. Yet I renewed last year at a price that is suppose to stay the same for the future (not sure I totally believe that will happen but I'm will to stay put at that price until it goes away), so I'll be sticking with DramaFever for a while.
BTW, as long as we're chatting about Sony and streaming, there is always Crackle. I think that Crackle plays into some of why Sony doesn't release more Anime in the US at the moment. Many shows they have stream on the services but the service has a serious case of not getting enough attention. Sony seems to be trying to change that of late. There twitter feed is full of promos - they seem to be moving into what seems to be original programing, but overall Crackle is struggling to get itself noticed IMO. Which is sad in it's own way. Crackle carries Anime, dubbed and subbed, that isn't available anywhere else and shows up on quite a few more devices than DramaFever. Then again they have issues some of the others don't - like re-running the same darn commercials over and over again (often they aren't real commercials but promos for the services - it's a lot worse than Hulu IMO) and they do need to work on their apps. The PS3 app is meh but has good streaming quality while the Roku one is a good app with meh streaming quality. It would help if they'd work on getting the Playstation app up to snuff while the Roku one may iron itself out over time (because that could be a issue with my Roku being a Roku 2 last gen - if I could upgrade to this seasons Roku 3 it might help the streaming quality out a bit). Until Crackle gets a PS3 app that allows you sign in (thus allowing for access to your personal ques and showing a viewing history), it's always going to be of limited use IMO. |
