NOTE: This is not a sub vs dub debate or a "JYB/Hana Kana is better than the reverse" type of thing. It's just an observation and comparison as to how we see Hana Kana. Simple.

The reason made this thread is because I heard once that 2ch sees Hana Kana the way you Americans see Johnny Yong Bosch. The basis of things seem to be that Johnny Yong Bosch is a love it or hate him VA, due to his vocal range or lack thereof, added to the fact that he's been rather prolific ever since Trigun was dubbed all the way back in early 2000. His vocal range has been criticized for being rather limited, always resorting to the "hero" voice he's been using since Vash with other characters ranging from Albert in Gankutsou, Kiba from Wolf's Rain, Ichigo from Bleach and so on. Americans and to an extent other English speakers seem to easily get frustrated with the prolific nature of Bosch, despite the fact that he is not even on ANN's more prolific staff meaning that even the mostly inactive Tony Oliver has done more roles than him, even though I have yet to hear a single complaint about Oliver's prolific nature.

Hana Kana on the other hand is a bit different. Japan is more used to having typecast roles, due to the nature of their voice acting industry compared to Los Angeles or even the US as a whole, so overusage is glossed over, if not outright ignored in Japanese communities as most people either want to hear their favorite VAs or they don't seem to mind. Hana Kana however has been criticized on 2chan for using her cutesy, high, distinctive voice is virtually every role with little to no variation, just like Bosch. The difference as highlighted before is that westerners tend to complain about overusage more, as if it's somehow a bad thing, which isn't common in Japanese communities, but this is a really interesting revelation to me. Do you think the same as me?

Tony Oliver.... "mostly inactive"?

That man has been involved, in some way or another, with almost EVERY dub that Bang/Zoom! or Animaze has ever put out. Even if he's not starring in it, he's usually either directing it or on the staff for it.

Psssh.... "Mostly inactive" my butt. Rolling Eyes

I'd have to disagree with what people are supposedly saying about Kana Hanazawa's alleged lack of range. I just went over her list of roles and saw quite a few cases of roles in which her voices for characters were quite different.

You should check out Nadeko from Monogatari 2nd season and Ichiko from Bimbougami ga!. She doesn't always play the cute voiced character.

While Kana Hanazawa is a touch overused and does have a distinctive voice (it is possible to tell if a character is played by her simply from a single sigh), she can mix it up when required. She's still fairly young and has shown that she is getting better with age. Two recent examples are her work in Hyperdimension Neptunia and Monogatari Second Season, both of which featured high quality performances from her where she used a wider range than just her normal cutesy voice.

I don't know why you are comparing a male with a female when there are plenty of male Japanese voice actors you could have picked to compare with JYB or female American voice actors you could have used to compare with Hanazawa.

Kana Hanazawa as Akane in Psycho Pass is more of a serious role as well.

I think she has a pretty wide range.

@SpacemanHardy I mean voice acting wise. He hasn't been doing much since Lupin, which was a long time ago. JYB doesn't even rank, while he does.

@dtm42 I compared them, because of their similarities, not their gender.
