I'm surprised nobody brought this up here yet; last night's Late Night with Conan O'Brien had another installment of "Pierre Bernard's Recliner of Rage" wherein Pierre talked about meeting the "Babes of Anime" (ADV's voice actresses at the New York Comic Con), and he was complaining about the linear version of The Anime Network not being carried by any major east coast cable providers.

Full transcript courtesy of my blog:

Quote:
Conan O'Brien: ...just look at the fury coming off of that guy. Well, yeah-heh-heh-heh-heh. Pure hate.

Pierre says he knows how America feels and he's ready to articulate our anger for us, so here he is once again in a little segment we like to call "Pierre Bernard's Recliner of Rage"

Singer: PIERRE BERNARD'S RECLINER OF RAGE

Conan O'Brien: Hello there, Pierre are you comfortable and angry?

Pierre Bernard Jr.: Comfortable and furious, Conan.

Conan O'Brien: Then go ahead, old chum, and speak for America.

Pierre Bernard Jr.: Okay, here goes.

As I've mentioned before, I'm a huge fan of Japanese anime, which I think is far better produced and more provocative than American animation. Well, a few weeks ago, at an event dedicated to Japanese anime, I was lucky enough to encounter seven young women known collectively as the "Babes of Anime". These beautiful ladies do voice-over work for several anime series including Trinity Blood about the Catholic church battling vampires and Bubblegum Crisis, which features sexy futuristic policewomen taking on monsters that ordinary law enforcement can't handle.

I'm particularly attracted to officers Sylia Stingray and Nene Romanova who often appear unannounced in my dreams, so you can imagine how excited I was to meet the gorgeous women who provide the voices for these characters, and, if that weren't thrilling enough, I then found out that there's a channel called the Anime Network that runs anime 24 hours a day. That meant I could hear these ladies' voices continuously every day while staring at my large collectible "Babes of Anime" poster, which is so hot it could melt paint off the wall.

Unfortunately, I was then shocked to learn that no East Coast cable provider provides the Anime Network. The Cartoon Network is available here, but they've been cutting back drastically on the number of anime programs in favor of live-action alternatives, and the best they can offer animation-wise is the talking butt detective show, Assy McGee.

Bottom line, America? East coast cable companies should carry the Anime Network 24 hours a day so I can always hear the angelic voices of Sylia Stingray and Nene.

Conan O'Brien: Thank you, thank you, Pierre. I'm sure there's at least one or two other people in the world who know exactly how you feel.

Pierre Bernard Jr.: Keep the faith, Amigos.

Conan O'Brien: Alright.

Singer: PIERRE BERNARD'S RECLINER OF RAGE!

Conan O'Brien: We'll take a break. When we come back, Mary Lynn Rajskub is here. Stick around!

Count me as a second person who both dreams of Sylia Stingray (c'mon, gorgeous, cultured woman with millions to spare who runs a lingerie shop? And she can fix your computer to boot? Count me in!) and is aggravated at ADV's Anime Network's limited availability and poor series turnover.

How long are you people going to keep Jinki Extend on there? I'll give you a hint, it's not going to move any more DVD's.

What the heck are you talking about? Women can't fix computers.

Heh. Just kidding, gals. Wink

Then again, I've been working in the IT field for a rather long time and I can still count the number of desktop support women I've bumped into on one hand. Maybe it's because I live in Texas?

Anyway, back to BGC, I only watched the 2040 version but IIRC it was Nene that I wanted to shag. It's been so long that I can't even remember what was so appealing about her. Probably nothing, but when you're stuck watching that trash your mind sometimes begins to make up its own storyline to help keep you from killing yourself.

If Pierre was talking about the "Babes of Anime" voicing BGC, he was talking about Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, since the original OVA series (plural) were dubbed at Coastal Carolina with entirely different voice actresses.

Well then whatever happened to BGC 2041 (or whatever it was supposed to be)? I washed my hands of BGC after 2040 but I thought I heard they were making a sequel of some sort so I kind of assumed that's what he would have been referring to. Guess I was wrong.

OOOHH I was so ready to have a flame going Razz

Conan O'Brien rocks! He's my idol! I was in tears when he was married Sad (okay, I'm really not that pathetic) But he's awesome! With the awesome hair, and everything! Ahh geeks are the best form of entertainment. Maybe it's only because we can relate.

I also didn't know that the East Coast doesn't get The Anime Network. How weird is that? Poor east coasters Sad

... makes me want to watch some clips of "In the year 2000"...

Pierre Bernard Jr.. He's that bald guy with the glasses right? I only saw him a few times (And I didn't watch Conan since the horny manatee - I like Leno better) - didn't know he was into anime Laughing

I wonder if Conan's into anime?

This is his third rant about it. The first time he was angry about all the different Robotech releases, then the next one he complained about Adult Swim replacing Cowboy Bebop with Case Closed, because he used the jazz music to help himself sleep. I think Conan's response was along "I'm sure there's one or two Cowboy Bebop fans out there who agree with you."

Hillary Haag did work on Trinity Blood (as Seth). At first, I thought he made a boo-boo with Chrono Crusade, which both Haag and Chapman (see below) did do work on (as Sister Rosette Chrisopher and Sister Kate Valentine respectively).

PROTIP: Sylia is a shop owner and reclusive rich person....I guess.

I love how Conan assumes that only a few people in the world know what anime is. How wrong he is.

"Canada and America join together to form a new country called 'Mexico Sucks.'"

If he really thought it was truly fringe, then why on earth would it even be on his show? The fact that it's even being commented on would seem to imply that it's bigger than just a few people. I think you might be misinterpreting the joke.

I wouldn't think too hard about it, God Gundam. It's all for laughs.
