I've been thinking about this for a while. Recently, there have been many series that treat its music/soundtrack as important as the anime itself (At least I think so). Of course there's BECK:Mongolian Chop Squad, which showcases the music of the band in the anime. Then there's also Samurai Champloo, which is about hip hop and rap. Finally there's FLCL, where The Pillows' music were sampled.
Are there any other series that highlighted it's soundtrack? It doesn't matter what kind of music - it could be rock, hip hop or rap. Also it doesn't have to be an anime about music either. Just as long as it has a soundtrack that is widely showcased throughout the series. |

Ranma 1/2 - had songs made by DoCo which seems to have been a parody of a popular group CoCo.
 There were tons of CDs made by Ranma 1/2.
Hummingbird - is an anime about a musical group. But beyond that I don't know much about it. I just remember watching a music video of their performance on stage. This would be the ANN entry for them! Pop music. Macross - How can we forget this one? We defeat you with Basara's horrible singing! j/k  They had some rock and pop threaded all over their multiple series. Also some type of alternative? Maybe, I'm terrible when it comes to genres.

The only one that immediately comes to mind for me is NANA, which makes sense because one of the main characters is a singer in a band, and a lot of the story focuses on or is expressed by her music. Even though the anime is pretty much the manga word for word, I don't like the manga as much because I can't hear the music.
I think a large part of why I didn't like the movie that much was "OMG ROSE IS NOT THERE! IT'S NOT NANA!", too. |

Yeah, DoCo got quite a push with the Ranma OAV series, that's for sure. Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't the singers in DoCo simply all the female voice actors? Then when the series was imported into the US, the American voice actors were credited as "DoCo USA", which I thought was a nice touch. |

Just wanna ask everyone - does Nodame Cantabile fit the description of the anime I'm looking for? I heard it's about this guy who plays the piano then as the anime progresses we learn more about him as a musician trying to become a conductor, etc. Does it also have a good soundtrack and is it emphasized?

Sorry for being a tease. My take on that show is that the pieces are essentially another set of characters. They have their reasons for being there and they contribute to the story as it progresses. They're not just a selection turned into a "Greatest Hits of Western Classical Music" compilation tossed in as a soundtrack. Having said that... In my opinion the drama version virtually steamrollers the anime. The energy captured in the illusion of the pieces being played by people is so much further above what the animators pulled off. But that's just my take on it. You'll have to find out for yourself. |

I'm a big Yoko Kanno fan myself, Wolf's rain, Escaflowne, Bebop, all great music.
Other honorable mentions including the previously mentioned ones are Evangelion, Hack Sign, Hellsing, and Outlaw Star. One of my favorites is also Soultaker, simply for that epic and cheesy intro. |

To be quite honest, I didn't know who Yoko Kanno was until this year. I saw that there were threads about her in this section, and I was curious who she was. When I found out she was the one who arranged the music for Escaflowne, I was really surprised. The music in that anime was the only thing that I really liked (Mecha's not for me) Same thing for Cowboy Bebop. I haven't seen it entirely yet, but I'm also aware that Yoko Kanno did the music for that one. |

I'm not 100% sure about this one, and for all I know I may very well be wrong, but I think Weiß Kreuz promoted their soundtrack quite heavily, as the four main voice actors were a real band.

I think I did hear something about this back when I first watched it. I'll have to check it out just to make sure 
I just remembered - School rumble's music is also quite highlighted, right? well at least I think so, specially for School Rumble Nigakki. There was this band with Karasuma and Ichijou, and they were performing these nice, cutesy songs. Some of them were in English, I think

Gravitation is another series that is set around the music world, as one of the main storylines (the one that doesn't involve two guys going at it, or at least not unless you read fan fiction/the Remixes) is focused around the main character and his band breaking onto the scene and competing with a well-established band that are also idols to them (which is almost the exact same basic premise as NANA as well, though that's already mentioned).
I'd definitely say that Nodame Cantabile (either the anime or the manga) would fit, as the music is an essential part of the series, maybe more so than even NANA or Gravitation since the Nodame Cantabile pieces are referred to directly by name in ways that most of the songs in the other shows are not (even though we know the OP was called Rose, I don't think it was ever actually called Rose anywhere in the series). |

Not only arranged, but co-wrote with her husband Hajime Mizoguchi. Specifically, some of the orchestral pieces are hers, and some are Mizoguchi's. Most of my personal favorites are Kanno-written ("Wings," "Flying Dragon," "Angel," etc), but Mizoguchi's work is lovely as well. Macross Plus may be worth investing your time and interest in, as not only is it a Kanno-scored anime, but music plays an absolutely central role to the story. (And some speculate that it inspired the birth of Gabriela Robin, the ever-elusive mystery woman who has sung many of Kanno's best works.) |
