I was just talking about this with my girlfriend today. She was just at the manga museum and they had statistics on the top-selling manga volumes. Hunter x Hunter vol. 20-something had third place, with 1 million-something, Naruto vol.55 had 1-million-something in second place, and One Piece had a volume that was over 4 million for first place. Like, holy crap. I KNEW it was that popular, but really... hearing the actual sales puts the whole thing into perspective.

Nice! The One Piece chapters lately have been really great, so it deserves those numbers.

Sometimes Oda works a little too hard. I remember reading somewhere that the guy only gets like 2-4hrs of sleep, also he gets sick a few times here and there. Even through all that, he still tries his best to put out a new chapter each week for his fans.

That's some commitment right there.

This can't really be right, considering a ton of One piece volumes have sold over 3 million, and a bunch over 4 million (Given that the average per volume is about 4 million). Slam Dunk and DB also have similar but slightly lower averages per volume based on sales figures.

There is not much justice in this world...

... But One Piece's standing in Japan is an exception.

Sometimes when you look at that these numbers and your mind boggles at that level of popularity, how many people are buying it, and you think, "Can a series really be that good with that many fans?"

And then you remember actually reading it, and you realize, yes, yes it can.

Indeed, as someone who reads/watches many other different types of series as well I often forget why I keep up with one piece, but then I just re-watch of the older episodes or read the latest chapter and automatically remember. Very Happy

People can call One Piece overrated as much as they want, but by damn it it must be worth SOMETHING if so many different people are fans of it.

Deserves every one of those sales, phenomenal series, it really is. I just do not know how Oda does it. From his incredible foreshadowing to consistently unique character designs to the amazing world he's created.

Japan only.

Which makes it even more mind-blowing.

I recall Naoko Takeuchi driving her Lamborghini when her Sailor Moon exploded all around the world - and that was 2 decades ago.

Couldn't agree more. I've been following the printed release in the US for just over 2 years now, so there are breaks in reading. Other things get watched and read in between reading so sometimes the interest lowers to "really great levels", then I get the next volume in the mail and after about 2 pages it goes right back to "best thing ever! OMG I need more now!".

I really need to subscribe to WSJ and blow through the Punk Hazard arc, Dressrosa sounds pretty great.

Probably not the best example. She comes from a rich family and was already driving expensive cars before becoming a pro mangaka, as I understand.

Jokes about Togashi being rich enough from YYH/HXH/being married to Takeuchi Naoko so that he doesn't have financial motive to resume HXH are always applicable though! Laughing

Naoko Takeuchi had to go to school Kyoritsu University of Pharmacy to become a pharmacist just in case her manga dream doesn't pan out, and worked as a miko (like Rei) at a nearby shrine while a student. Not that rich.
