Anpanman was the series that introduced me to Japanese animation back in my childhood. Thank you good sir for all the entertainment you have brought to kids and adults alike.

I knew almost nothing about Anpanman and his host of companions when I went to work in Japan. My preschoolers quickly started my education, and I grew to love this goofy, goofy series. If you don't know Anpanman, you don't know the first anime of almost every Japanese child. Even though he was quite elderly, this is still the passing of an icon. Crying or Very sad

And if you're not interested in the children's entertainment angle on this, you know that song the Tachikomas sing in the final episode of Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd Gig? That's Te no Hira o Taiyou ni, written by Takeshi Yanase.

A grievous loss for the industry. He will be missed.

How ironic. The show is bloody as fudge, yet has a nice soothing song to end of with.

Since Takashi Yanase died right about now, I mean should they cancel Anpanman due to his death or something like that, right?

That hasn't stopped them from not producing more Sazae-san, Doraemon or Crayon Shin-chan, so probably not (it's a tradition over there mind you).

Reminded I think the only thing we ever got related to Yanase's writings was the Sanrio-produced featurette "Ringing Bell" (Chirin no Suzu) which saw an English-dubbed VHS release in the 80's, soon to be released by DiscoTek Media soon.

For readers new to anime, as an FYI this is among the biggest anime-related news this week, maybe even this month. I've still to sit down and watch an episode, but it's definitely on the list of things I should check out, especially if I ever find myself going to Japan.

I never knew that, neat.

I'll still say fat chance on that unless it's not stipulated in his will or contract.
