Kekkaishi has kind of been on my radar for a while, but after Yellow Tanabe won Shogakukan Manga award this year for it, I decided to give it a go. Bought the first volume couple of weeks back, read it on Saturday. And I thought it was pretty decent, cute character design, appealing main character, clever and different magic system. But also the "I want to protect her" that Yoshimori keeps repeating was so uninteresting, and while it's nice that the female lead Tokine is strong (-er) I kind of have the vibe she'll be eating dust at Yoshimori's heels soon - it didn't really make me want to run out and buy the next volume.
I love shounen. I'm not expecting any high brow earth shattering philosophical meaning behind it all. What I'm interested though is deep emotions, great friendships and clever plots. For those of you who have been following the series - is it gonna give me that? Should I give it another volume? Is there a bigger storyline coming along that's gonna sweep me off my feet? Am I going to fall in love with it? Any other thoughts you'd like to share, I'd love to hear. |

I absolutely adore Kekkaishi. It does have a tendency to beat you over the head with the "I want to protect her" theme, but Tokine never becomes a damsel in distress or anything. Instead, their relationship stays very interesting seeing as how they're both still rivals despite Yoshimori's desire to protect Tokine.
The story always has that touch of sappiness to it, but personally I find it kind of sweet There is no major arc coming up soon, but I still recommend sticking with it. I also recommend checking out the anime if you haven't done so. It really enhanced my enjoyment of the series and is sometimes easier to 'take in' then the manga. All in all it's just a great series to turn to when you want to see characters that don't get overshadowed by action. IMO, it's definitely worth it |

I was counting on getting your opinion
So the second volume ended up in my pile when I was doing my weekly manga shopping yesterday. I was also talking the owner of my local comic shop about Kekkaishi and she said pretty much the same thing as I've heard many people say. That it kind of starts up slow but every new volume just gets better and better and constantly surprises you on how good it actually gets. |
