So a Six episode OVA is being released on Six HD DVDs for $39.99 each and is subtitled only.
I'm not so sure it'd sell too well in the US. |

So with this I guess I can assume Galaxy Angel Rune is going to get a sub only, HD DVD/Blu Ray release... I honestly don't see where they're going with this since I think something like that would sell horribly, especially with such niche titles. But eh, I'll probably be buying GA Rune regardless...

I'm also wondering about the quality of the sub itself. In my experience, many of the subs coming directly out of Japan are basically Engrish.

Bandai Visual was probably hoping the Otomo name would help, but he's not that big, even to me. And I've pretty much tried to gete everything he's been involved in for the last 15 years.

What's worse is they only intend to release it in HD-DVD and standard DVD. No Blu-Ray (from what the artical said) edition at all. So, 40 bucks for an anime that half the next gen DVD player adopters can't even play.
I am sure this won't end well for Freedom. |

I agree, it is a terrible way to use people to get more money. Then to put it out in only one of the formats really hurts. It feels just like when I bought Blue Submarine no.6 I think I would wait on this one, however much I would like to see it. |

I saw the first episode and just loved it! I would love to buy it on DVD but sadly, my wallet can't afford a one episode per DVD release. If this series comes to a nice box set or I come into lots of money, I'll definitely buy this. The sub only makes no difference since I always ignore the dub track.

They might have a chance if they put in big capital letters "FROM THE GUY WHO MADE AKIRA!" I am still really looking forward to this, and since I have access to a HD-DVD player I am pretty excited about this.
I wonder if this will also be one of the titles that is released in Blue ray, but yeah it sucks for people who don't have a HD-DVD. This whole format war is just stupid, stupid greedy executives.....as if they need more money.

What do these two statements have to do with each other? It's basically Microsoft vs Everyone else. HD DVD uses HDi (a Microsoft technology), prefers the VC-1 codec (a kinda microsoft technology, based off WMV 9 which is based of a draft of MPEG-4 Part 10), and uses Microsoft's dev tools to make the disc runtime for disc developers. Blu-Ray uses a version Java for Embedded platforms (an open source technology) and prefers H.264 (another name for the official final version of MPEG-4 Part 10). It uses Sony's developer tools along with Java tools. VC-1, MPEG-2, and H.264 are mandatory codecs for both formats. I ask what it has to do with executive greed while knowing that Microsoft is in it to extend their windows monopoly to new devices. |

Well, most of that is figured into the fact that Playstation 3's have Blu-Ray. So everyone who purchased a PS3 also got a blu-ray player, even if they have no intention of using it for Blu-Ray. |

I'm going to mainly blame Sony for this mess. Just look at some of the proprietary formats (and royalties) they've tried to force on the market during my lifetime...
Betamax Hi8 Digital Hi8 MiniDisc DAT Super Audio Compact Disc Memory Stick Memory Stick Pro Memory Stick Duo Memory Stick Micro M2 UMD ATRAC And now Blu-ray. We all know that Sony can do wonders for electronic media when they're willing to play nice (CD, DVD, etc) but apparently they'd rather have those awesome royalties and control (i.e. no porn) instead of giving the consumer what they really want. Microsoft is certainly no friend of the consumer either, but Sony just simply outdoes them when it comes to screwing over the consumer with proprietary hardware formats. |

Those outselling figures are usually not for the players, they're for the movies. So the fact the PS3 has a blu-ray drive doesn't figure into the sales figures if no one buys a blu-ray movie for it. |

What part of blu-ray is proprietary? And FWIW, Pioneer owns the patents on the optical disc stuff itself (CD/DVD/Blu-ray/HD DVD) so they get a nice little royalty. It expires this year. Also, the porn thing isn't true. Sony is not trying to "ban porn". I mean, you can even find porn on UMDs in Japan... The problem with the porn is that it seems most pornography companies don't want to/can't pay for the authoring/burning of the disc. But those people in the link above obviously did. But it was never about Sony banning porn, it was about disc duplicators being unwilling to do it. |
