Has anybody heard if this show? It looks a lot like it is anime, but its not listed here. I know its not considered anime because it is not japanese, but I think it should be. It is a really great series. What do you think?

It takes a lot more than just looking like anime to be an anime. Sometimes good shows should be left to their own merits, whether it's anime or not doesn't really change a shows quality.

Avatar is not anime, it's an American show made in the quote-unquote "anime style," just like Teen Titans. You can read a bit more about that here. |

I think it's the best show ever made. It's American.
It doesn't belong on ANN. Avatar is better than anime. Oh and...influences for the show...Taoism, Buddhism, Chinese art, Japanese animation and Asian live-action films. |

It's not anime, by definition, just like a zebra isn't a horse. It is, however, one of the best shows of all time and I can't wait for season three. And zebras are cool too.

Excellent show from what I have seen. We watch occasionally at family time, because it, along with Foster's, is one of the few cartoons that daughter, boyfriend, and I all really love.

didn't you just answer your own question? The definition of "anime" is "japanese animation", therefore, if it isnt japanese, it isnt anime. Just because something is really good dosnt make it anime. Its an american animation. American animation is not inherently inferior, so you dont have to justify liking the show by calling it anime. ![]() |

I'm actually a little ashamed to say that I fell so deeply in love with Avatar that when I bought the first season boxset, I gave it an honorary place in the bookcase that houses my anime collection.

Hell, I loved Avatar so much that I actually bought it, and I believe my stance on DVD ownership is well established.
Still haven't actually OPENED the DVD set yet though, I've seen all the eps already. |

It's pretty once it gets going but like nothing really new in the beginning...it's pretty ok to watch it as a saturday cartoon while eating your sugar covered breakfast crumbs with soda pop

Cool -- an Avatar thread! And here I was, all worried about mentioning non-anime anime in one of my other posts; it's good to see I'm not alone!
While I do really like the show, I also have to agree with LuckySleven a bit here. After watching so much anime, I'd say that Avatar does better than average with the storyline and characterization, but it's not something I would categorize as a masterpiece. It's fun, and it's cool that the home team is throwing its hat in the ring, so to speak, but it still seems like the writers try too hard to make it funny too often, instead of letting the characters and story develop (and it's not exactly a new story, either). I understand some of this can be attributed to the target age demographic, but still, a little less slapstick would go a long way here. Don't get me wrong -- I really like the show, especially the way it incorporates different cultural references (e.g. different martial arts styles for each of the bending styles, the different aspects of eastern religions, the need for balance between the elements, etc.); I'm just saying it's not number one on my favorites list. That being said, I'm still totally on the edge of my seat from watching the end of season 2 (spoiler[ARGGGHHH! Zuko how could you? You've got two seasons to change my mind about you, young man!]). So, um, when is season 3 airing again? ![]() |

I think my little brother watches this.
Im generally not a fan of classifying Anime in this way. Though technically Anime means japanese animation, although if you really wanna get into it, in Japan doesnt Anime actually refer to ALL animation? So since were already kinda making up our own definition anyway, why not include even american shows done in the Anime style. It seems to me that its more imortant that its done in the Anime style? Well, maybe less so in terms of Anime since american made anime is more likely to be less Animeish, but especially with manga. I at least think it deserves a page in the encylopedia to avoid this type of confusion. Even if it includes a disclaimer or something explaining that it isnt technically anime/manga. |

I don't know, I think it could probably do with a little less slapstick, sure, but I think that what it does have is tasteful enough that it doesn't hurt the show. There are a lot fo anime (and US shows trying to be anime) that do far far worse.
This has been talked to death in another thread, but it basically comes down to the Japanese word "anime" having a different definition than the English word "anime", much like the Japanese word "sushi" having a completely different English meaning. The Japanese word is indeed a broader definition, but the English one refers only to Japanese animation, as we have a different word to refer to all animation broadly, namely, "animation". |
