You need to watch the first movie before the second movie. there are plot elements of Innocence that follow from the first movie and may not make much sense out of context.

I'm not sure about Solid State Society- I believe that follows the 2nd Gig, but you could watch 2nd Gig after the first season of Stand Alone Complex without missing too much.

The two movies and the TV series (along with SSS) are in fact in slightly different versions of more or less the same universe, which are both slightly different again from the manga.

The frist and second movie ("Ghost in the Shell" and "Ghost in the Shell: Innocennce") stands for themselves.

The Series "GitS - SAC" and "GitS - SAC2nd" are alternate versions. They have nothing to do with the movies, except the names and places. And there is now a third movie. "GitS - Solid State Society". This is based on the TV Series and played after "GitS - SAC2nd".

First came the original movie. After that comes the 2nd movie. These two link only to each other and none of the TV series:

Ghost in the Shell (movie)
Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence (movie)

Then you have the TV series. Aside from characters and setting, the plot is "stand alone," hence the name. The series is divided into two seasons, SAC and SAC 2nd Gig. However, it is all one series. There are also a few OAVs and movies that tie together as well, but only for the SAC universe:

Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (TV) (52 episodes)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Tachikoma Days (OAV) (a little comedic spinoff of Tachikomas having fun)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - The Laughing Man (OAV) (a compilation of The Laughing Man material from season one)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex - Individual Eleven (OAV) (a compilation of the Individual Eleven material from 2nd Gig
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: Solid State Society (movie) (a new movie which I know next to nothing about because I'm still on season one, I'm guessing it's a stand alone movie in the SAC universe)

Well techincally the manga came first but as far as anime is concern it's the original movie came first. Also Tony the new movie Solid State Society actually takes place after the events in the Second season of SAC. From what I've heard the movie takes place a few years after 2nd gig has concluded. So you will want to have seen both season first before viewing the newest movie.

Not 100% sure but the responces I received when asking a similar question a couple of months ago was that...

I'm gonna use The 1st season of GITS as an example: Say ALL the episodes that involved the Laughing Man, the "complex" episodes, were all spliced together into a movie, that would be the movie. They are not spin-offs.

No the compilations are not spin off, in GITS:SAC (1st season) every episode is either label Complex or Stand Alone. Imagine Complex to be like the main arc, that being the laughing man. You get the main story, but you miss out on lots of character development that occurs in Stand Alone episode. Not only that but Stand Alone episode generally tell you more about this future Tokyo, and thus builds a more believeable world.

Whereas with the Individual Eleven I felt that if you didn't watch every episode of that season you were only get less then half of the story. Everything is more interconnected in the 2nd Gig, where in SAC you could watch only Complex episodes and leave happy with a good story.

The television series, Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is grouped together in the Encyclopedia here, but in my opinion, they could (and perhaps should), so a little confusion the way it was presented.

I would summarize like this, for those not to familiar:
  • Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (Laughing Man Case)
  • Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex: 2nd GIG (Individual Eleven Case)

The 2 OAVs are essentially shorted versions of the two series, I would not bother with them and just watch the two series. The "Tachikoma Specials" are not really an OVA, they are ~2 minute shorts that follow each episode of the first season, and tie into episodes loosely, and give more back story/character development of the Tachikoma's. I do think they should be watched after each episode to fully enjoy the first season. I also would like to point out that 1st/2nd seasons are not alternate versions as someone made it seem like, I think the poster meant that the movies and the "Stand Alone Complex" series are alternate versions.

To answer the original poster, since you've already seen the first season, I would watch the second season, then watch the two movies in order.
