Overall, which would you prefer regardless of obvious genre differences? I can get the complete collection of either for roughly the same price and have been interested in picking them up for awhile now.

Hmmm, this is almost a recommendation, but I won't report it.
That's actually hard, you're aiming to get a full set of either of them.Have you seen either? And if not I may say Wolf's Rain is an easier first watch IMO but Witch Hunter Robin is also pretty good, but it's a little slower. They're both slow though. |

I've seen trailers and they both look good. I don't particularly care how slow it is as long as it pays off in the end. Which has more character and story depth?

I vote 100% for Wolf's Rain, it's one of my favourite series. I love the characters, the story is solid, and you really come to care about what happens. I cannot say the same for my experience of Witch Hunter Robin, which I found very monster-of-the-week at times and honestly I couldn't care less for any of the cast. It has some strong episodes in the middle, but it's not something I would ever watch more than once.

They're both excellent, but I'd say Wolf's Rain is better. Wolf's Rain is deeper and left me a stronger impact on me than Witch Hunter Robin. But it really depends what you're looking for, when it comes down to it.
Wolf's Rain's pacing can be a little weird at times, but it's very emotional (especially the ending...gah), the animation is really nice, and the music is downright gorgeous. Of course, it's Yoko Kanno, so it's to be expected. I love the atmosphere of the series and I felt it really had a lot to say about life, true happiness and what it is, and tragedy. Of course, it's one of my favorite anime of all time (after Cowboy Bebop), so I'm more than a bit biased. I do know from reading a lot of reviews, though, that some people found it disappointing. The ending is pretty open to interpretation and the pacing gets wishy-washy in parts, and some people didn't find the characters engaging. I thought it was an extremely strong series (good enough to be my second favorite anime--and I've seen hundreds and hundreds of great series), but it's one of those series that you either love or don't. I'm obviously in the former camp, though I recognize that it does have its flaws. Witch Hunter Robin is slowly paced, so it takes some patience, but it does pay off in the end. Robin is a great character, and while the show goes through a lot of one-shot episodes (think Monster-of-the-Day type of stuff), it subtly leads into an interesting plot. There are a lot of nuances in this series that make it great. If you have an interest in more gothic types of anime or prefer your stuff with a supernatural twist, I'd go with Witch Hunter Robin. It's a great series with some amazing moments; I just didn't feel it was as engaging, meaningful, or beautiful as Wolf's Rain. |

I agree with Pacific Pikachu.
 Right now I am watching Witch Hunter Robin and I love it, but Wolf's Rain (to me) is allot more exciting and emotional. I would get Wolf's Rain first. Check out Witch Hunter Robin when you get the chance though, it is wonderful.

Just FYI, while this is technically a recommendation thread, I'll allow it since it's only between two titles. On the other hand, if it was something like: "I've seen WHR and WR. What else should I watch?" then I'd have locked this immediately when I first saw it.
And for future reference, I'll let these types of threads slide, given that the user doesn't make the opener too brainless and inane or constructs it in the fashion I just demonstrated above. Personally, I'd go with WR if you want lots of melodrama and a more captivating story. WHR is more style over substance with very sparse characterization (not neccessarily in terms of production, but the whole "gothic police force hunting witches" theme), but it looks cool doing it at least  . It's also a bit episodic, and you never really get to the real plot until somewhere between the halfway and end of the series Both also have some commendable soundtracks and decent enough dubs, so that's another plus.

I will second that they both have wonderful OSTs. The Witch Hunter Robin ED song is one of my favorite songs that captures the feel of the series. The Wolf's Rain ED song might be my favorite ED song that sums up the series' atmosphere. I think there might be a decent sized overlap between fans of these two series. Although they are both stylized and beautiful, I like Kawamoto's art deco style a bit better. The Rakuen artbook is just gorgeous, and I would recommend it to anyone who likes this series. Wolf's Rain also as mentioned is a very emotional series, and is at times almost painful to watch, The only issue with Wolf's Rain's release is that there is a DVD that is known as the recap DVD. Since you are looking into the complete collections I suppose you will end up with it. If you end up buying the individual DVDs instead you might want to skip this volume.

I'll agree with that, while the recaps do have a few extra scenes, the disc containing them is probably only really essential if you are a huge fan. That said, I do own it, but I also have the art box that came with vol 1 and one day hope to fill it (just missing 5 and 7). |

I'll go against the grain, though I am biased as WHR has; unsurprisingly; Robin.
I found Wolf's Rain dull, after the first couple of episodes where everyone comes together and gets over the initial meeting phase and setting out bit I found most of the series dragged. There were certain bits that caught me and kept me going but in general a lot of it seemed like there was meant to be something deep and meaningful happening but...I couldn't stand the main character and the other three only had their moments rather than being that much fun to watch. Now I wouldn't say WHR is the best series ever but it never felt overly slow or episodic, true you do go through some MOTW bits early on but none of those episodes were entirely pointless, something to help develop the characters always happened, to create the atmosphere when the events do come to a head. Once they do then the series rolls along. My only real gripe is Amon...can you get more stereotypical (when was 'The Matrix' released in comparison to this by the way?) |

Both of these series would be worth your time, so there really isn't a wrong answer here.
Wolf's Rain has a moderate start, but once you get into the later episodes the series picks up so quickly, and reaches such an amazing high at the end of series. Witch Hunter Robin is generally a medium paced show and the feelings I got from the show were consistent throughout, but the impact it brought upon me never reached as high as the later episodes of Wolf's Rain. Despite its moderate start, I see Wolf's Rain going far beyond Witch Hunter Robin. However, if your after consistency and want each episode to have its own individual feelings, Witch Hunter Robin may be the one for you. As a side note, since your buying complete collections, the issue of Wolf's Rain's "Recollections" dvd really isn't an issue, and the pacing of the early episodes won't be so bothersome seeing as how the peak is still to come. -NessFreaK |

Ok, I went ahead and picked up Witch Hunter Robin. Turns outs the Best Buy that said had Wolf's Rain available didn't. I'll still probably get it sometime later though.

Nice choice! I hope that you enjoy Robin, it's one of my favorites, but when you get the chance get Wolf's Rain. And on your way home with it, stop by your local market and pick up a couple boxes of Kleenix...you'll need them! |

If you can find it I'd also buy the soundtrack for WHR. Both series have stellar soundtracks, but since you chose WHR I'd suggest you buy that one first. Great music and it's very melodic. I often used to listen to the WHR OST, among others, while doing college homework. Helped me to relax.

I often used the WHR shot glass that came with volume 1. Helps me relax 
I also love the Champloo, Hellsing, Trigun, and ROD shot glasses. Wish there were more of them out there since all my roommates are also bartenders. |
