I think everyone here knows about the ADV Manga situation, where they let a lot of series stop after 1 or 3 volumes. A very popular series we all like to grumble about them not continuing is Gunslinger Girl.
Well, it looks like maybe something is starting to move again for at least one of ADV's languishing titles. Maburaho, which put out it's first volume back in April 2005, just got it's second volume released this month. There's even a full page ad in Newtype USA's March issue advertising it. So, my queston is, is this the only series that's started back up? Has ADV made any indication that they are planning to start up some of the others? Most importantly, why Maburaho? What's the deal with this one? |

Other than releasing the second volume of Maburaho, ADV hasn't made a peep or done anything to give any reason to expect anything from them. Their choice of series to resume gives me even less reason to expect anything from them. I mean, Maburaho? They released one volume of it right before the canned 99% of their series and I don't remember anyone really clamoring for more of it. It seemed to be lost amongst their numerous other mediocre titles. Meanwhile, Yostuba&, which was supposedly doing well, hasn't seen a volume in over a year despite 3-4 more volumes being available in Japan. Gunslinger Girl is the only other series that seems to have a decent number of fans waiting and hasn't been picked up from Tokyopop. But instead of going with one of them, they pick a series that had one volume released and never stood out amongst their other titles.
I thought they were getting back on track with Anne Freaks and couple other titles, but it seems that was a false hope. At this point, Evangelion: Angelic Days seems to be about the only series they are still putting out. |

It makes sense that they'd start publishing titles that they already have a licence for now that they've more or less stabilized. As for which titles, that's up in the air. I don't really understand why they haven't put out the fourth volume of Yotsuba&! (problems with the Japanese publisher maybe). I'm suprised Tokyopop didn't pick up Gunslinger Girl since a good number of fans seems to be head-over-heels for it, which either means that the fanbase is alot smaller than everyone thinks it is or ADV is indeed planning to publish it again. As for Maburaho, softcore porn is always a good seller. |

They still put out Cromartie High School and a few others. But I want my freaking Yotsuba&!. Pretty please!

American publishers pull this crap all the time. Not just anime/manga publishing companies, but publishers of American novels as well. I don't even know how many times I've gotten really into an epic fantasy series to find it cut short by the publisher. I wish they would be considerate enough to either not put out the first volume at all or finish out the series, one or the other!

You do realize that Japanese publishers do the same thing (much more frequently by the way), right? And honestly, if something doesn't sell, what are they going to do? Lose money? In some cases (like ADV) the publisher is at fault for stupid marketing or unrealistic expectations, but you can't blame them if people just don't like something. |

Well, if what I read on this thread over on the Anime on DVD forum is true, then you'll be happy to know that ADV Manga is going to resume releasing Gunslinger Girl. According to Amazon.com, Vol. #4 is schedule to street on June 27, Vol. #5 has a September 5 street date, and Vol. #6 has a November 21 street date. Also, June 27 is the street date for Yotsuba!& Vol. #4 and Yotsuba!& Vol. #5 is scheduled for a October 10 release date, again all according to Amazon. |

Anyway, here's a graphical representation of how I feel. Let this news be spread far and wide! More Gunslinger Girl manga is coming to English readers! Now if only they could make more anime to go with it. I know I should probably be a little more cautious, but I just can't help but believe this is true. Because if it's not, it's cruel and heartbreaking. So I'm going to think positive and hope my thoughts influence reality. |

I would too since Amazon was the source reference, and I'm usually very skeptical about whatever they post on their site. Now if TRSI has it on their site, then it's most likely legit since they're proven to be a very trustworthy source. I'll keep an eye out for it. |

I was thrilled when I read this over at AoD. I'll take this with a grain of salt until it pops up on some other sites, but I can't help but be excited that Gunslinger Girl may actually be continued since this is the first we've heard anything about it in at least two years. If this is true, there may be hope for ADV's manga division after all.

I'm not counting too much on that. I don't really trust them. Too many great series down the hole. I'm just glad I waited for the releases of Gunslinger Girl before I picked it up. And then when they didn't come out anymore, I decided against buying it. And I'm happy Tokyopop picked up Aria. But even from the looks of that, it will be a while before we see those releases. ADV also had a manwha series called Sweet & Sensitive that was really good. But they stopped it at only 2 volumes. They make me cry. |

Well, there should be a new Diamond Previews catalog out in a couple weeks that'll cover June-shipping product, so if that next Gunslinger Girl is in there, that's about as official as it gets.

What do I get for attending calc this morning? Missing out on some potentially great news.
Seriously, though, I really hope this pans out. I'd been wondering for some time now about the misfortune of picking up a series that would never see the light of day again. If it does, my interest in buying Yotsuba!& stands a good chance of bein rekindled. |

Then it actually came out. Maybe ADV is trying to get some income out of the expensive licenses they've already got. If there is more Gunslinger Girl coming, I'm happy. If not, this may mean I'll have to place a curse on ADV. |
