Man, it's a shame jobs like this weren't opening up when I was just out of school and still making $6.50 an hour working at a record store. Either that, or I just wasn't looking for them.

This sounds like a great job. EDIT: Come to think of it, I'd have to be up early since I'm in Arizona. Either 5 am or 6 am here depending on the time of year (because AZ doesn't do the Daylight Saving thing). |

Genuine question (since I'm NOT a journalism major) isn't that job description more of a direct "reporter" rather than an "editor"? I'm not TOTALLY clear on the difference, granted, but it seems like you're looking for someone to "find" and "report" news rather than "edit" the material. I don't at all fit the qualifications either way, but I've always thought editing was a role I COULD do had I pursued it as a profession. So for that reason, I'm curious if this is an actual "editor" job, or if that's just the title being given (in this case) but the job itself is more of a "reporter" job. (or if "Assistant News Editor" in journalism speak is a fancy way of saying "reporter")

It's a little of both. Some companies put out great press releases. Most need to be edited at least for length. Others REALLY need to be rewritten for use in a web format.
At the same time you do need that reporter instinct to find an item that isn't being discussed openly...yet.

The difference between and editor and a reporter is that an editor makes decisions. An editor decides what to cover (based on guidelines given to them by more senior editors), and decides if an article is ready to post. Most people think that editing is the same as copy-editing, but many editors rarely or never copy-edit. At ANN, our editors do a bit of everything, we don't have a 30-person editorial department. Hopefully the person we hire will be quickly promoted from "Associate Editor" to "Editor." The difference is their level of independence, and we're looking for someone who will work independently. Wow, sounds like a tough job. There are a lot of people who come to ANN only for the latest anime news and every reporting/editing job looks to be important. I hope you guys can find an excellent candidate that's up to the task. Good luck to both ANN and all the applicants.

For how long of a period will you be accepting applications? Is the position open until filled, or is there a specific date by which potential candidates would need to have their material emailed to you by?
Also, how quickly could those who apply expect to get a reply? |

So what's the "base" salary? And how exactly will you pay the associate editor? By the number of articles, the type of articles, or both?

I'm assuming the 24 grand is an estimate of the potential one can make out of working here, not the average.

Annual salary will be a minimum of $24,000. Base salary will be determined by qualifications and skill set. Saying that the final salary will be determined by skill set is pretty standard for the professional world, they're allowing that a highly qualified candidate would be able to ask for more if he/she brings highly sought after or useful skills to the table. |
