I think Buso Renkin review is harsh but true. Especially at that point in the story I was like "this is more cliche than calling something cliche", however the story takes some great twists in volumes 5 and/or 6, so it is worth continuing.

Awww, I love the funny chibi faces in Rozen Maiden! I dont think its fair to call it 'laziness', it just gives it a comedic edge. I think the art is already fantastic anyway, so comedic chibis can hardly be 'lazy'.
It seems RTO has a new format...I dunno, something about it seems weird. The 'evidence against' seems to bash the manga too hard, whereas the older 'cons' section didn't seem to do this as much. Maybe its just me. It just seems weird praising, then REALLY bashing, then awarding something an A.

Yeah really, Buso Renkin was reviewed a lil' harsh. Psh. But i think half those reasons against it is why I like it. 1. I'm a Watsuki fan. 2. I'm a Kenshin fan. 3.Cliche' sure? but eh .. eh.. ah forget it. At least Embalming, will be in volume 10 anyway.

I enjoyed this.
I bought the frist BUSO RENKIN after seeing the frist episode. I didn't really enjoy either.
For some reason NHK makes me laugh so hard. Sadly most of this is done in class and I'm afraid one day the teacher is going to want to see my book and it will be this one. I can't wait to see the actual show.
I saw pantehon high and dismissed it quickly. After reading the review maybe I should rethink that descion.
And I want to read the worst manga. Just because its odd. And I wonder if he succeds. I wonder why the hot brother never tries to get on his ugly sister. I've never read the manga (she may be ugly) but she's probably not.

I like this new format. I can't get enough of the bashing. I also like the final verdict because it gives just enough of a rebuttal.
The Welcome to the N.H.K. review just enforces the fact that I need to pick up this series.
Pantheon High seems interesting.

Ron Burgundy says that and he is pretty cool.

I'm pretty sure that "Offline Meetings" happen in Japan. It's just hilarious how much Satou gets himself mixed up in. Volume 3 will have probably the only uplifting story in the whole manga. I also liked how the suicide island was played out in the anime more than the manga what with the whole Yamazaki actually being worried, Senpai's husband-to-be, and Misaki all coming to the island and Misaki saying flat out to Satou how she needs him to feel better about herself. That and a cliff is far more dramatic than a carbon monoxide hut. The manga also showed me how unconcerned Yamazaki was about Satou, which was jerkish of him.

While I've always appreciated that you list pros and cons for each title you review in the column, I don't much care for the amped up courtroom rhetoric. It seems a bit artificial, and makes it harder for me to take the points of either side seriously. Just saying.

I don't know what Carlo thinks about that, but I really wouldn't say AS succeeds as much as the two titles mentioned (particuarlly Hourou) at creating a strong, emotional story centered around a highly taboo subject. The taboo wasn't even the main point of the plot either.
Anyways, I have to say I liked the changes you've made to the column. The "Final Verdict" in particular is a good idea, as you've occasionally created such compelling counter-arguments on series that I've been left wondering "Ok, why did he give this a B now?" The court concept adds more humor to the column, and I'll certainly be looking forward to future Best/Worst entries *goes looking for "Boku Imo"* So yeah, good work in my book.

I'll agree with both sides...
I like the courtroom-style reviews. Took a little getting used-to, but after that, it adds another layer of humor on top of your hilarious narrative.
But, I also agree that the cons, or evidence against, is a LOT harsher, as opposed to the pros, or evidence for, only getting slightly more supporting.
So, keep format, but ease off a little...
As for the reviews, Welcome to the N.H.K. is one of the best series I've read in a long time. And having seen the anime, I agree that it handles the 'Welcome to the Offline Meeting' a lot better, and more emotionally-charged, than the manga does. Still, an amazing read, if you're old enough to buy it.(M- 18+)
And thank you for reinforcing my decision not to read Nodame Cantabile... a shounen series with instruments... a concept worse than shounen series with bikes, soccer, or tennis... heh...

I like the new FInal verdict thing, and the Best/Worst manga section as well! Good ideas!
However, I do have to say that I watched the NHK anime first, and so far I've enjoyed the way that the anime has handled every scenario more than the manga. The anime is more over the top except with Satou's lolicon in the first manga volume (for the anime, the girls are high school age) and the characters have more depth to them. (The Offline Meeting doesn't even happen to episode 12 or so, so I guess that's kind of obvious.) I'm still holding out for the manga to get better, but so far the anime is way better for me. I think it also has a lot to do with the timing of the humor or something :/. I also like the Keroro anime way more too, so maybe it also has to do with which medium I was exposed to first as well.
Anyone else with me! (No? I thought so!)

Though I don't normally post here, I must say that I really enjoy this new courtroom format for the column, and was much more entertaining to me than the previous format. Also, I love the new Best/Worst manga segment...definitely looking forward to more of that.

Actually I agree with you that the NHK anime handles all the scenarios much more than the manga but for the exact opposite reason you do I feel like the manga tries to be too over-the-top, while the anime is more toned down and feels a bit more realistic to me.

Now, am I missing something, or is NHK not really 'all that and more'? I've been told by people on both sides of the Rubicon that NHK is a "hillarious, yet sad reality check" and "a ridiculously immortal piece of manga tripe". The former are more vocal but the latter more credible; so, what do I do?
I read the whole bloody series in something like five hours. Should have taken about two, but it was hard to get through; I must say, I found not a single bit of the manga comedic in the slightest. Maybe it tries to hard, I dunno; Satou's situation was far too pathetic for me to by sympathetic, let alone empathetic like so many people punted as being an essential "draw" to the comedy.
As such, I do not think NHK is worth of any rating beyond B, even though the art is really, really good and the story "original". What good is originality if there's no substance? If NHK were a serious critique on the "hikikomori" lifestyle, where does the author stand on his views of it? Satou continuously makes attempts to emerge from his black cesspool yet always falls back into depravity, which is annoying given I've read, what, five volumes or so and there's been no development of this "contract" with Misaki.
...
On topic with BR, a "D" rating does sound a bit hard-fisted, given BR might be generic but is 'a lot more daring' than something along the lines of, oh, Bleach, One Piece, or Naruto. I cannot really give much of a criticism beyond that given I've not read the series and am relying on the heresay of my fellows, but it's worth considering on the next fly-by.
Nodame Cantabile's popularity is annoying, given the anime (and sadly, sounds) horrible and has god awful writing; I've been told the j-drama is good, but since all the material seems to be pretty faithful to one another it sounds far-fetched when following the anime's script. At that, it is surprising that people can jab Bartender as being a cliché "what hobby can we animate next" show, yet take a blind eye to how superficially the writer(s) of NC represent "music culture". Really, it's little more than another spin on H&C, not that H&C was all that good anyway.

Nodame Cantabile is not "another spin on H&C", neither the manga nor the anime - the latter only looks like one because in a burst of uncreativity the production staff decided to make it look like H&C. It was a very unfortunate decision for many reasons, but it doesn't mean that Nodame is a H&C ripoff. It isn't. Both the anime and the manga have their flaws, but being "just another spin on H&C" is not one of them.
Also, it's surprising that anyone would seriously think that Nodame Cantabile tries to represent "music culture". Huh? It just tells a story about some interesting people who happen to be music students because the author apparently loves classical music. (By the way, I have to wonder about the reviewer stating that Brahms' first symphony and pieces by Chopin, Liszt or Schubert are "music-student esoterica"... I'm not a music student but I know these pieces, in fact, I'd say they're pretty well-known.)
And for the record, I liked Bartender a lot. It wasn't the next big thing, but who cares? It was an enjoyable series.
