Why on earth have a convention this late in the year? It butts up right against the Christmas season, and with the NYCC only two months later (with some of the major anime labels and manga attending it), it's questionable as to the attendance. The vast majority of congoers will have been "conned out" by that point.

yea but this will be the first Anime Con in NYC in a few years. Since BAAF went out, nothing took its place. this is exciting news for us NYers. And what better time to have a convention than near christmas. One stop shopping!

True enough on all points, but AnimeNext is just across the river in Jersey. A fifteen minute bus ride from Grand Central. Not a bad con, if you ignore all the curtains that are superimposed as "walls".

I really didn't enjoy AnimeNext. I went for the 2 years after BAAF closed and was more disappointed each time I went. They had less than steller panels and their dealers room(s) were not very well put together. I did not go last year so I cannot say how it was but the two previous years were nothing like the other smaller (for lack of a better word) cons that I frequented. It just wasnt worth the hassle of commuting to NJ. At least you can still enjoy the city if there is one in NY. Thats also a plus near Christmas.

I don't know that you could ever have what I consider an "anime convention" over at the Javits center. It's good for trade shows, but the social atmosphere in terms of places to gather after the show is a bit lacking. That's one of the things that I really enjoy about AnimeNEXT, you can find tons of places nearby to hang out with friends. The west-side of NYC is a kind of bleak, desolate place to me.

Well, maybe they're thinking that scheduling it near (but not too near) Christmas will actually be a draw. At that time of year, lots of people come to New York to sightsee and look at holiday windows and the big tree and all that. Maybe they're thinking that attendees --and guests--might actually be more willing to come out 'round that time.

Also, NYCC 2008 is apparently moving to April 2008, so there'll be something like 4 months between this new anime show and that one, not just two.

I gotta think that this new show, because it's Reed and because it's New York will draw many more attendees and exhibitors than AnimeNEXT, but yeah, the trade off is the general atmosphere of the location. Hopefully, they'll find a way to keep some hanging-around space and activities, but outside the Convention Center, it really is a wasteland.

thats why BAAF was so ideal. It was right in Times Square. But I do like the Javitz Center. Been to many a car show there. But the surroundings are a bit of a letdown. But if it is like most Javitz events, it will be a one day deal and you go home afterward.

this could be huge. REALLY huge. I've wanted to go to car shows at the Javitz, but i never got to. i know that the place is big, but with it being a NY con as said before, there are also probably gonna be some really big guests.

man i wanna go to this if it turns out to be big. Cool
