Have you ever watched an anime and when the anime was over you realize one of the characters is a completely different person then from the start of the anime? Maybe they're more brave, more heroic, whatever. Or maybe you notice the changes whilst watching the anime.

From my experience with anime, I think the most changed character I've seen would have to be Kurapica from Hunter X Hunter. At the start of the series he was very friendly and fun loving and always had a smile on his face. He laughed and basically enjoyed life and hanging out with Gon and the rest of the gang. Halfway through the series you realize that is his lust for revenge on the Spiders is starting to overpower this nice side we've seen the entire series. By the end of the series he is blinded by his hatred towards the Spiders and is basically...to put it nicely...a dick.

So tell me what characters do you think have changed the most over the course of a series. It can be any sort of change, whether they went from evil to good or vice versa, became more confident, whatever you choose. And no one liners! I want some good input.

The first one that comes to mind, and pretty much instantly, is Yoko Nakajima from Twelve Kingdoms. At the start of the series she's a sniveling, whiney brat who can hardly do anything but feel sorry for herself and openly trusts anybody. As the series progresses and she faces her hardships she grows until she becomes spoiler[the strong willed queen of her kingdom in the end]. She becomes less reliant on others and capable of facing dangers on her own and is no longer naive and can see through deception and take the proper course of action to counter it.

It's one of the best transformations of a character in an anime I've seen and, to me, is one of the series greatest strengths.

Ooh! What a great topic!

I'm going to side step my typical "raving about Princess Tutu" and instead mention Lust from Fullmetal Alchemist. She's one of my favorite characters in the series--I love how she starts off being manipulative and willing to sacrifice anything for her goals, and ends the series spoiler[actually dying while working with the Elric brothers.] It's a really facinating change...and it's a shame the manga doesn't have it.

I'll second the motion.

And great choice of Lust, BTW!

While I haven't seen all of The Second Raid yet, I'm going to have to nominate Sousuke Sagara. Yeah, he still has issues but when we first met him, he was NOT able to handle civilian life in any way, shape or form. Yet now, he doesn't react as badly as when we first met him. He wants to do well at school, he wants to be near his friends, and not just to protect them either and he most especially wants to be with Kaname. I'm really looking forward to seeing how this one ends.

And of course, there is my usual favorite Tsukino Usagi of Sailor Moon. Yeah, she does grow. Would the Usagi of Episode 1 walked away from the body of the man she loved without spoiler[a farewell kiss] as she leaves to fight the villian? Yes, she still cried and didn't want to continue but she did do it. She made the hard choice and continued on, by herself and did what needed to be done. The Usagi we first met would not have been that strong. And she grew stronger as the series progressed but she never lost the endearing qualities that we saw when we first met her.

That's the sort of change that I like in a character...where they grow strong in power and/or in themselves but they still remain true.

I will have to say Brandon Heat from Gungrave. I love how the first episode shows him as "Beyond the Grave" which makes you wonder during the next dozen episodes what happened. He is a grim killing machine. The second episode cuts a young happy go luck street punk who slowly turns into the character from the first episode. The overall effect reminds me of Guts who has a similar introduction in episode one and transition into episode two. I suppose I chose Brandon over Guts since he feels more innocent in his younger era while Guts has always been somewhat of a dark figure.

I second Lust from FMA too!!

Well, I nominate Kanou Kyousuke, Rodrigo and Sakai Jefferson Koji from Hungry Heart Wild Striker.

Kyousuke: At first he said he hated soccer spoiler[(In fact he didn't... He just had a bit of a grudge against his older brother, a pro soccer player who's member of the A.C. Milan, Kanou Seisuke)] and more often than not got into trouble because of something from his past. Once he decides to give his school's socer team a chance, he turns out to be a cocky and not very accurate guy who only wants to do Whatever He Wants. However, throughout the series, he learns there are times when you have to trust others and believe in teamwork, and turned out to be a really valuable player (although he's still quite conceited). However, he does show a bit of maturity when spoiler[he asked Miki-chan if she cared about him leaving for the Netherlands, since he had a chance of going pro there. If only she had said 'yes,' he would've stayed in Japan T__T... He had actually fallen in love with her!!]

Besides, at first he said he hated women, since they "gave him the creeps," but Miki-chan was the only one who didn't cause that reaction O_o...

Rodrigo: A Brazilian scholarship student, at first he thought that 'Japanese soccer is terrible.' That often brought him trouble with the team's resident hothead, Ichikawa (CUTIE!), since he was quite a selfish player. Of course, between misunderstandings and his attitude, we learn that spoiler[he arrived at Japan to try and get into the J-League to help support his family.] However, he remembers how he enjoyed soccer as a kid, and learns to play in a team. spoiler[He also got a pretty GREAT chance to go pro with lots of advantages (for him and his family), but he rejected it since he wanted to play with Joyo Akanegaoka and his two best pals: Kyousuke and Koji (Sakai)]. So he goes from selfish one-man-team player to being the link between midfield and forward.

Koji (mostly known as Sakai): Probably the least cocky of the Cocky Trio spoiler[(and yet he's still cocky)], he also had a pretty low concept of Japanese high school soccer, since he was born and raised in Europe. However, he was the quickest in learning to grow up and be part of the team, even rejecting his father's proposal to spoiler[go to London and enter a pro team there]. What doesn't change in him is the fact he judges people by their looks (as he is quite handsome himself spoiler[although my fave HHWS bishie is Ichikawa n___n]]), but I guess he'd grow out of it if the series had continued.

I'll nominate someone else later.

Kamui from X-TV

At the beginning of the series, he is this badass who doesn't care about anything. By the end, spoiler[he wants to save the world and everyone in it and is willing to sacrifice himself in order to do it].

Absolutely, and I was actually more surprised than I pehaps should have been when I opened the topic and didn't see her name at the top of the list. I've never seen a character that changes so much before. She really is a pathetic excuse for a human at the start of the show, and I genuinely hated her as a person.

However, the extremely believable (in terms of how it would affect her... not how real the world was... Laughing ) turn of events changes her personality against her will to force her to accept reality and be the kind of person that everyone should be. By the end, she is absolutely one of my top three role models in anime for the kind of person I would like to be. I honestly can't imagine a more dramatic change.

im thinking 2 characters immediately

ken from digimon season 2 and ogiue from the genshiken manga

Ken was a villian at the beginning but then became an ally then became a VIP in the digiteam.

now oguie in the genshiken (now in animated form in japan) is a die hard yoai/otaku/geek hater 4 life. until slowly but surely she softens her defenses thanks to sasahara and ohno and saki friendship it seems to me. the end to her transformation is in the next GN......in 2 MONTHS ARRGHHHH![/spoiler]

I third Lust. Her character development was amazing, especially since she was a 'bad guy'.

Actually, a lot of people in FMA seemed to undergo some pretty heavy character development....Mustang, Bradley, spoiler[Lyra], not to mention the Elric brothers themselves.

Another good example of a character who's changed dramatically is Hachi from NANA. At the beginning of the series she was naive and (quite frankly) rather annoying, but then she seemed to grow up all at once. spoiler[Especially since she found out she was pregnant and 'decided' to marry Takumi. It's like she's a completely different person now.] Of course, NANA's another one of those series where everyone changes.

I think another good candidate is Faye Valentine from Cowboy Bebop. I didn't really like her when she first appeared, but as more and more of her backstory and character was revealed, she grew on me. spoiler[Her reaction to the video from her past self had me in tears. When she first joined the crew of the Bebop, she was just out for herself and using the ship for protection, but by the end of the series it seemed like she actually cared about everyone.]

I would like to add Zefiris from Scrapped Princess to this list.

I think she is one of the characters that changed the most in the series. spoiler[ Kinda weird considering she's not even human to begin with]

Orihime from Bleach.

At first she was a completely and utterly innocent, clueless, almost stupid girl whom I fell in love with, then she became all heavy thinking and serious after gaining her powers, but of course she's still pondering about whats going on, but after so long, when it's normal for this to happen, she's still thinking and not making so many random actions which completely changes her......I mean when she's not battling evil then she should be the same as before.

There are characters who change throughout the Dragon Ball series. Like Trunks. spoiler[He appears in the show as a grown-up], but later in the series, spoiler[he's a kid.]

Nuriko from fushigi yuugi of course.. (Isn't it obvious I love Nuriko?) He started out as a cross dresser, then he decided to leave the frilly clothes behind and started the journey to becoming a man, and finally, he really did become a man just before he died.. Laughing

Hagu-chan from Honey and Clover is completely changed by the end of the first series. She cries less and can actually talk to someone else besides Shuu-chan without getting all nervous and running away.

Yukito from Air TV also completely changes from the temperamental guy we saw in the first few episodes who had no confidence or will-power. By the end he's confident with his performances and also expresses his kindness a lot more.
